What are some good English dubbed anime for kids?

I already have Totoro, Ponyo, and Howl's Moving Castle. My kids (8 and 4) love these, so I want to buy some more. Preferably anything without the words "soul eater" or "exorcist" in the title.

There is another thread on English dubbed recommendations, but most of those seem directed towards teens+.

Kamichu! It's about a middle school girl who discovers overnight that she is a Shinto god and can see spirits. It's very Studio Ghibli-esque, so if they've seen Spirited Away then they are sure to enjoy it!

My 8-year old daughter enjoyed The Secret World of Arrietty (2010). Other than the stuff on your list, I really can't find much for little girls. It's pretty sad.

Films for children 8 and 4? I'd say:

Studio Ghibli
  • Castle in the Sky
  • Kiki's Delivery Service
  • Spirited Away
  • The Cat Returns
  • Whisper of the Heart, maybe?
  • Arrietty, maybe?

Momoru Hosoda
  • Summer Wars
  • The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, maybe?
  • Wolf Children, maybe? (contains scenes which imply having sex with the wolf in wolf form, could be inappropriate)

Satoshi Kon or Makoto Shinkai
  • Probably nothing for children that young; maybe Millennium Actress?

Other
  • You Are Umasou, for the four year old, maybe?

Cat Soup might be a little weird for smaller kids, but maybe not? It's interesting to look at, at any rate.

Hikaru No Go is fantastic, though it may be a bit advanced for a 4-year-old. I would recommend it for any older kid though - it's absolutely kid-safe, teaches great values about determination and hard work, and has great, relatable characters.

You can find the entire series dubbed on Hulu.

One Piece is rather violent sometimes, don't know why it gets recommended in here for a very young kid.

Pokemon is kid-friendly but has has a few dark moments.
Avatar The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra is very light most of the time but is an American production.
Maybe Sailor Moon? Can't remember much of it but that seems like a good pick.

Because many of us grew up watching anime with similar violence levels. it's much less violent than dbz. compared to a show where the main character gets laser-blasted through the torso and dies by like episode two, stretchy rubber punches and a bulletproof main character aren't so much.

Everything by Hosoda, especially Summer Wars. There is a little bit a incidental nudity in Wolf Children (ie. sex is implied) but kids probably wouldn't pick up on that.

One piece is way more violent than dbz.

Dragon Ball is the same, in my eyes. They are both intended for an audience of 14+ years, not little kids.

Ah. Well, it was pretty much the most popular anime nonstop with boys i knew of my own age from about the time I was 8 to about 13, and it felt like all of the shows that surrounded it on tv blocks were of about the same violence level, with the possible addition of permanent character death.

The few anime I watched with significantly lower violence levels were probably just Pokemon, Digimon, and
Hamtaro.

So after more reflecting on this thread, I think Hamtaro was actually the only anime I watched as a child whose plot did not revolve around some form of violence. The next mostly-violence-free one was probably the crayon shin-chan episodes on adult swim, which is, if I remember right, a fairly vulgar comedy.
I guess pokemon and digimon do have the whimsical sense of adventure and abundant small cute creatures going for them, though, compared to the various battle anime about young men determined to be the very best at their chosen form of combat.

How about sports shows? I think there are many without any form of questionable content at all, but the idea is probably pretty hit-or-miss depending on the child.

Oh and I guess "try out everything else by studio ghibli that isn't grave of the fireflies" should go without saying.

I remember the first Digimon series blew my mind when I was about 10.

If you can get past the whole kids-with-monster-friends Pokemon runoff aspect of the franchise, it's a pretty engaging "trapped in another universe and trying to get home" style scifi series. Definitely gives its young viewers a bit more credit than Pokemon does.

Just go through the rest of the ghibli films before you bother with anything else

edit: except for grave of the fireflies, don't show them that...
