Origin: SimCity 2013 Free Trial (It's not THAT shitty anymore)

edit: (According to the FAQ http://help.ea.com/en/article/simcity-free-trial-faq/ this is a 4 hour limited trial. Meh. I'm not sure if it's replayable or not like the beta)

Heads up, in addition to the free Wing Commander 3 deal on Origin, EA is also offering SimCity up for a limited free trial.

If you're one of those people who said you wouldn't try out SimCity unless it was free, well, now's your chance.

A lot has changed since the incredibly fucked up launch last year. We can now play offline, and thanks to the modding community, we have larger plot sizes (sort of). It's still probably not worth 20 bucks to a lot of people, but for free you might as well give it a chance. Unless you have some sort of principled boycott against EA.

Installing mods is as simple as unzipping files and then placing them in your SimCityData folder.

"What mods do I get?"

The most important ones at this moment would probably be: Project Akar (UI enhancement to accommodate all the mods), UDoN (one way streets), Project Orion (extended boundries). For those wanting to start out modding gradually, I'd suggest going with only Akar and UDoN first, since the Orion extended boundaries mod is a little confusing at first. What's nice about this combo is that you can still meddle around with building outside of the city boundaries, but you are limited to roads only. This is a powerful tool that can allow you to incorporate one way streets into the layout. For example, you can make a one way outflow street that goes out of the city boundary and directly connects back to the region to help with all those annoying tourists who want to leave, bypassing your city's main streets and alleviating traffic.

Otherwise, you can just install a modpack like this one: http://skyestorme.com/skyepack-mod-pack/ (please read the directions).

The official site for hosting mods is Simtropolis, and you can't download anything if you don't sign up. http://www.simtropolis.com/

Orion (bigger cities): http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/29650-project-orion-3k-extended-boundary/

Here is a listing of some mod reviews: http://skyestorme.com/simcity-mods/ Note that it's a little old, and many of these are incorporated into other mod packs now.

Here is a nice, recent video of how to install the latest mods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfKuuRFV1kU

I kind of liked this game but it was very slow and tedious. Lots of the time you are sitting on 3x speed waiting for the extra simoleons. I do recommend it for a try though.

I was considering doing this just to try it. But 4 hours for a SimCity game? By the time I got the city set up the way I like it and figure things out, the trial would be over before I even had a chance to enjoy the game. I don't think it's worth the download hassle.

Don't worry, you can fill your entire plot by that time.

It was my first sim city game so I put like 20 hours into it and the city size never bothered me. I didn't know any better though. It was decently fun.

It never was shitty for me.

Bought during the launch, it's good fun. Bought every single DLC too and of course, the expansion pack (come at me).

Haven't played in a while though, gonna check in soon.

Its still Sim Village.

Somehow they thought its smart to programm it for a singlecore CPU in 2013.

There isn't necessarily anything WRONG with programming a SimCity game to run on a single-core CPU. The problem is they didn't also program it take advantage of multiple cores, which is just what the hell man.

Nice to see there's a mod for extending the city boundaries, but it sounds like there are a bunch of caveats associated with it. Bleh. BLEH.

I'd love to try it, but then I'd have to install Origin.

Eh. I can live without it.

If only Sim City 4 ran well enough for me on my machine.

Pity, as a simulation, this game is the perfect game to utilize all these cores we have just sitting idle.

Have the developers ever mentioned plans to increase the plot size, even as an expansion pack?

I think they're pretty much done with it, and maybe the whole series, at this point. Not much sense in pumping more money into a game with such a large (and, in all fairness, kinda deserved) hatedom.

Is the game still reliant on having a bunch of feeder cities for the resources you don't have?

All the technical problems they had at launch sucked. But even ignoring all that, the game they designed just wasn't something I wanted to play.

Not really. If you build your city right, you can function more or less autonomously by buying from the world market. It's a lot more fun playing with some good people in the region, though.
