Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Rez, Child of Eden) announces two new projects for iOS/Android

Apparenty we missed these being announced back in July, at least judging by search.

First up, the title he's directing. This doesn't have as much info, but TGS is just around the corner.

As a whole this is a pretty great article covering many of the upcoming big mobile games from Japan (big as in potential to make a fair amount of money as assessed by Serkan Toto). I suggest a read if you're interested.

Game Project TBA – winter 2014

Genre and official site:
Puzzle game (no site yet)

Comment:
Announced in July, this project will be the brain child of Tetsuya Mizuguchi. Details are scarce at this point, but the game will blend puzzle game mechanics with social elements and a “mysterious” story. Using Mizuguchi’s background and star power, the title will be released by mobcast worldwide. I would expect “traditional” video game players pick up this title just because of the name of the creator.

Secondly, the title he's producing.

Dragon Spin Z ドラゴン★スピンZ (iOS in September/Android is planned for October 2014)

Genre and official site:
RPG (no site yet)

Comment:
Dragon Spin Z is a mix between RPG and social casino (slot) game and a co-production between mobcast’s Japan and Korea offices. The plan is to distribute Dragon Spin Z in Asia, including China, which should be the case after the Japan launch. I covered mobile social casino hybrids in Japan here. Most have failed, but this one has a big selling point: the producer is legendary creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi (ex-Sega, see below).

I didn't like the human angle of Child of Eden.

I think pachinko will be the next frontier for Japanese devs after they exhaust the gold mine that is mobile.

If that's the future for games, then maybe I'll finish up my backlog after all!

Still, it is Miz...

I see the trend lines, not much I can do anymore. I wished for the end of it, because it's clearly destroying the demonstrably superior gaming dedicated handheld market. Controls alone will always be superior, unless we have to connect some awkward controller to the damned things, and even then it's a segmented market that only some percentage of devs will take advantage of.

That said, because it's going to happen with or without me, I've decided it's probably more constructive of me to hope the games make the best of their format and come out playing well. I mean, there still are some exceptions in the mobile market that actually play well, and so I guess as more and more devs make the transition, we'll start getting a higher percentage of quality products. Still, it's certainly sad we're losing what we'll inevitably be losing in ten or fifteen years.

Yeah, the etherial waifu thing was weird. I liked that Rez was more "cybernetic".

The migration of Japanese developers to mobile makes me so sad. I just want him to make a new Sega Rally for next gen consoles. Is that too much to ask?

But is the mobile market really a meritocratic enough to enable this? The Japanese mobile market looks very healthy revenue-wise but how top heavy is it? These recent announcements also show that most game have a case of the "follow the leader" syndrome.

I have my doubts but I'm hoping for the best. There are always the previous 7 gens to go back to.

I think the kind of stuff Q Entertainment did is a good fit for mobile. Anyone here ever played Groove Coaster? Not made by MIyazaki but pretty similar to his games, and it's one of the better iOS games.

Yet, we are still without Rez 2 and Space Channel 5 part 3...

Child of Eden was kind of a spiritual successor to Rez so that's as close as you'll get.

You know what I want? PC/PS4 versions of Rez and CoE with VR support. That'd be amazing.

It's one thing for the same devs to make the same games over and over, but when everyone makes the same game it's kind of weird.

Why do the interfaces always look like Puzzle and dragons without fail?
Why is it always 5 monsters/party members?
Why is it nearly always the same elemental system?

I swear, there's a law saying every mobile game's UI needs to be absolute shit.

I know it isn't the case with all of them, but geeze.

I'm not sure entirely, I bet we'd get a clearer picture once the market expands in that direction and NPD and others start tracking those sales more intimately.

But it does seem companies are making a lot of money. Of course, it seems a lot of that is in really badly designed F2P/money scheme games, or the $2.99 or less variety, meaning by necessity the death of the bigger budget titles. Few can fit a big budget title at that price in their business plan.

So on my end, it'd probably lead to a diminished overall amount of game playtime. But I'm sure I'd find some fun stuff.

Glad to see Mizuguchi making games, not sure about either of those early descriptions. The social puzzle game could be interesting. I feel like his design sensibilities would be a great fit for touch interfaces, hopefully he'll return to the rhythm someday.

Kinda hard to blame Mizuguchi for that when Sega owns the IPs.

Its true. It still hurts that Sega doesnt care about those IPs, but well... its Sega.

I enjoyed CoE a lot, minus the annoying girl and the last "boss".
I agree on those VR ports.

The 'annoying girl' is the lead singer of Miz's band, Genki Rockets.

Child of Eden was wonderful.
