Why is Nintendo not porting their handheld games to Wii U?

I mean, they have been porting a lot of console games to the 3DS.

Ocarina of Time N64 > 3DS
Star Fox N64 > 3DS
Xenoblade Wii > 3DS
Donkey Kong Country Wii > 3DS
Famicom Remix Wii U > 3DS

And soon Majora's Mask.

SO! Should they start porting handheld games to Wii U? Games like Luigi's Mansion 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising, maybe?

There was a rumor about Luigi's Mansion 2 being ported due to retailer listings, but nothing ever came of it (yet).

Nintendo will be launching the Pit Amiibo in correspondence to Kid Icarus Uprising HD on Wii U.

Mark my words!

Nah, focus on making new games.
I know, I know, not the same amount of time and resources and stuff, but it's not something that can get everyone excited.

It involves a lot of work that probably wouldn't see all that much of a return for them; in most cases their resources are probably better spent making new games. Keep in mind that most of these games are not going to look great if ported to Wii U; they'd either have to invest even more resources into making new assets, or face complaints of ugly Wii U games.

It's also in their interest to convince customers to buy both systems; if there aren't any 3DS exclusive games, how are you going to sell 3DSs in the west, and if there aren't Wii U exlusives, how are you going to sell Wii Us in Japan? Look what happened to Sony with the Vita; there's hardly any reason to buy one if you have PS3/4 these days because almost all their games are available on console.

That last point might be more specific to me, don't really know, but overall I think it's a good idea to distinguish your two platforms to a pretty significant degree.

Yeah I'm still waiting on Luigis Mansion Dark Moon coming over... I believe that rumor.

And yeah, Kid Icarus would be just perfect. I would be so happy to buy that again in HD.

I wish they would announce HD ports of Kid Icarus and Luigi's Mansion already if they're going to do them, so I'd know not to buy the 3DS versions soon

Time and money they'd rather spend on new games. And I'm glad. I loathe console ports and remakes, waste of time and talent if I can already play it elsewhere (only acceptable port is giving me mobility).

I have been holding out on kid Icarus uprising because I want a Wii u port :/

I don't really see any other 3ds game benefitting

Also where den D's games you promised nintendo

I guess they don't want to take too much away from 3DS, but GCN, Wii, and some 3DS games getting HD ports on the Wii U would be pretty neat.
Kid Icarus Uprising HD needs to happen eventually. It's a very "big", console quality game that looks gorgeous....just doesn't control as well as it could (or at least it's not as comfortable as it should be)
They did mention that porting from 3DS to Wii U isn't as easy as they would like, so that will be a big focus for the next handheld/console...but we'll see. I think it makes sense. There's a lot coming out for the Wii U next year and HD re-releases to fill in any gap would be great.
I'm actually really surprised we didn't see a WWHD style game this year especially since they went through the trouble in making that GCN->Wii U asset converter.
edit: before anyone says this: No, HD ports=/= less new games and we aren't asking for a lot every year.

If all they had to fill the Wii U's lineup was 3DS ports, that'd be pretty fucking sad.

There is almost no reason to port games from their active handheld to their active console. Just takes away from one for the sake of the other.

You guys know that they would keep Kid Icarus' controls the same, right

they're integral to the game's design. Though I imagine some that find them uncomfortable would prefer it on the gamepad so their hands don't cramp.

Well, outside of KI: Uprising and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon (both of which look so limited by the 3DS; the former with its....'unique' controls and the latter potentially being amazing looking on a stronger console), I don't see the need for Nintendo to bring over there 3DS library to Wii U.

I mean, they care about there platforms having an identity and value unique to them, and that can only happen if exclusive games on 3DS that really use it stay, well exclusives :D. Stuff like Mario 3D Land really uses the 3DS features in unique and creative ways (I think; don't own a 3DS or this game, but it is the only one that looks to really take advantage of the 3DS features of the system :D) and seeing stuff like that be forced to migrate to the more powerful and/or successful console irks me a bit (*cough*Tearaway Unfolded*cough*).

Granted, some 3DS games could work really well on Wii U. As mentioned before both KI: Uprising and LM: Dark Moon seem to be a natural fit on Wii U. The former can really, really leverage from the Wii U's support for Wiimote+ aiming controls and the higher power could really make that world look amazing while the latter game can use all the same features the original had (map on bottom screen for example) with the GamePad alongside the stronger hardware really making that haunting mansions all the more impressive looking :D. We saw stuff like this already from 3rd parties (Capcom's MH3U and RE:R both use the Wii U well alongside Konami and WB porting over there handheld games (Castlevanna and Batman Blackgate) to PS3/360/PC) and those ports/remasters did a solid job using the stronger hardware well.

I don't want Nintendo to go port happy....we saw what will happen to a platform that has its exclusives yanked from it (Tearaway and what is very likely to happen, Gravity Rush and its sequel) X(. Still, some times it can work, so I hope Nintendo does this with the more demanding or best fit games down the line :).

Kid Icarus HD would be amazing, I'd still use stylus controls.

of course you would. I would too. KIU HD would be amazing because the GamePad is fucking huge for stylus ocntrols. I would love more real estate.

dual analogs on that shit on higher difficulties. yeah, no. I'm turning away from that.

Because there's no point doing so. We know that Nintendo doesn't care about resolution at all and with the second analog stick, there is no advantage in controls either. Maybe someday if they create a new "GB Player" like "3DS Player".

Wii U ports of 3DS/DS games (essentially HD remasters) would take more time and money, and they would probably sell less than 3DS ports of 64/GCN/Wii games. It's a (smart) business decision.

Kid icarus is a MUST for wii you. The fact that it STILL isn't on Wii U, but Xenoblades is coming to 3DS is so confusing.

That would be additional resources wasted on a dying platform.

All signs point to Nintendo fully supporting Wii U so much as to lessening the rate of releases on the 3DS as of late, so no.

The real reason is the fact that they'd rather work on new iterations of these games since most of these games are one per platform anyways (Think Mario Kart, Animal Crossing etc). So releasing ports of games like KI:U would make sense but outside of a handful, most franchises would be better of with new releases that wow people and incentivize people to pick the system up. Nintendo do on occasion make weird port choices however (DKCR 3D on 3DS not long before TF on Wii U).

I'd rather them port games I can't buy anymore or find for cheap instead of games that I just played a couple months/years ago.

You mean like remakes or something?
Nintendo has the VC with GBA and DS games in the future, but most Nintendo handheld games would look bad without a lot more work, are recent games ,there are the dual screens, different architectures and the fact that Nintendo needs exclusive content for both handheld and home systems.

But they also are staying away from that and their next systems will be more integrated and able to share games without much trouble.

How can it be a dying platform if sales are up year over year, and it has sold more then the Xbox one WW and more then double PS4 in Japan?

Japanese sales are a joke and momentum is nearly null world wide, particularly in NA. The ps4 is embarrassing it worldwide. It would take a miracle to match the GameCube's numbers. Third parties avoid it like the plague. Its a dying platform. I know that was a joke post but any other questions?

I think Nintendo would absolutely port 3ds games to the Wii U if it were easy to do. But right now I suppose they deem it too demanding and too costly. That's why they are so interested in integrating their future platforms to make games across both easier.

You make no sense in any case since reusing assets and porting already released games would be easier than making all new games like MK8 etc but here we are. Did you even watch the E3 event? I know it's been a while but Nintendo are supporting it with 100% commitment. Your notion that Nintendo isn't porting 3DS games to the Wii U due to it being a waste of time makes no sense at all.

I'm not sure you quite understand what the word momentum means. If the sales are up YoY then it has positive momentum...it's not just "null"
