NEW AMSTERDAM centers on a brilliant and enigmatic New York homicide detective unlike any other. And he has a profound secret -- he is immortal.

In 1642, JOHN AMSTERDAM (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), then a Dutch solider in the colony of New Amsterdam -- later to become New York City -- stepped in front of a sword to save the life of a Native American girl during a massacre of her indigenous tribe. The girl in turn rescued Amsterdam, weaving an ancient spell that conferred immortality upon him. Amsterdam will not age, she told him, until he finds his one true love. Only then will he become whole and ready for mortality.

Starring:
  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as John Amsterdam
  • Zuleikha Robinson as Eva Marquez
  • Alexie Gilmore as Dr. Sara Millay Dillane
  • Stephen Henderson as Omar York
  • Susan Misner as Detective Sergeant Callie Burnett

WHOOPS, IGNORE ALL THAT, JUST SCROLL DOWN AND FORGET YOU EVER SAW THIS

AHEM...

SPOILER ALERT: he dies in the first episode

Forever premieres at 10pm EST on Monday 22 September and then again in its regular timeslot at 10PM on Tuesdays starting on 23 September.

Doctor Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd), New York City's star medical examiner, has a secret. He doesn't just study the dead to solve criminal cases, he does it to solve the mystery that has eluded him for 200 years—the answer to his own inexplicable immortality. This long life has given Henry remarkable observation skills which impresses his new partner Detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza), but piques her curiosity about who he is. Each week, a new case and their budding friendship will reveal layers of Henry's long and colorful past. Only his best friend and confidant, Abe (Judd Hirsch) knows Henry's secret.

Forever was written and executive-produced by Matt Miller (Chuck, Las Vegas). Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Gangster Squad) and Jennifer Gwartz (Veronica Mars, Cupid, Party Down) are executive producers. Forever was directed by Brad Anderson and is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

I hope you didn't read the beginning of the post. Funny story, that ...

SPOILER ALERT: he dies in the first episode

Pilot was very good.
Can't wait for a new episode. I'm also glad that i don't have to wait a week more for a second episode. Episode 2 airs September 23rd.

I always thought it was stupid how dudes name was Amsterdam and it also takes place in New Amsterdam (New York). I mean fucking really?

Great OP, I laughed. How's the pilot reaction, good so far? I still have no idea what new shows are going to be any good or not, the only three I'm positive I'll watch are two I'm picking up based on pedigree (Marry Me/Flash) and one because I already saw the pilot and enjoyed it (A to Z).

You can watch the episode yourself. It's on Hulu, ABC's site, probably On Demand.
And pilot reaction on GAF is positive. I liked A to Z, but i liked Forever much more.

Haha, I'm only 3 minutes into the pilot but I find it hilarious that in both shows if you're a white dude and you take a bullet for a POC( Native American girl/African guy) you get to be immortal.

maar spreekt deze mensch dan oick Nederlandsch?

/ I don't know the actual old-Dutch form, it's really weird.
what I was going for: "But does this man speak Dutch?" Because I've honestly never watched it.
edit: found a preview: no, he does not.

That said, I had expected a Hornblower reference, I mean: Mr. Fantastic
literally reappears from a body of water? How much water exactly? Does a flat surface of 1cm still count? ..does a toilet?

waterboard me if too spoilerish.

Still, giving the pilot a chance.
and the unavoidable Groundhog Day episode

A+ OT.

EDIT: Also, you forgot that Lorraine Toussaint stars in the show now.
Fixed!

There's also a tiny easter egg in the OP for all you guys from the cancellation thread, if you can find it.

I just realized I think he dies 4 times on screen in the pilot, lemme go squeeze another spoiler alert in there somewhere ...

Haha, I appreciate the New Amsterdam thing, it's what we're all thinking anyway, right?

Even better, there was a book called "Forever" that came out in 2003 that was very similar to New Amsterdam. Of course the creator New Amsterdam denied hearing about the book, now the guy who created this show denies ever hearing about New Amsterdam or the book even though it seems quite blatant. Granted the concept isn't exactly unique but it's still funny and a little suspicious.

Bumping for the pilot if anyone hasn't gotten around to it yet. New episode tomorrow as well.

Pilot

New York medical examiner Dr. Henry Morgan hides an unusual secret, he has lived for over 200 years.

Timeslot debut is tonight. Monday for the pilot was just a sneak peek thing.

"Look Before You Leap"

When the police deem a death Henry thinks to be a homicide a suicide, he and Jo investigate.

Just watched the first episode and I really enjoyed it.

I kept telling myself that this mystery guy is John Amsterdam until at the end he revealed he's been around for 2,000 years.

I guess he's just Jesus.

I thought it would be like watered down New Amsterdam, which wasn't all that great, but it's actually quite nice, better than NA. There's a lot of humor, the main character keeps dying in funny ways and there's already a strong overall arc. Plus the police girl is hot :D

It;s definitely not a show I will be dying to see new episode off, but it's fun to watch, so even if I fall off week by week I will be sure to marathon it during some luls.

They're falling into that trap of sandwiching dull stuff in-between the interesting mythology parts of it. I bet every episode is going to end the same way.

I really like the show, cast is quite good.
They blend in flashbacks, immortality/mortality subjects and ongoing cases quite well.
Remains to be seen if the premise can keep you going past the first couple of deaths/revivals and "oh god who's gonna almost find out he never dies this time".

saw this show last night, all 3 episodes were really good. the latest Aetna/Aterna one was brilliant.

I like the fact that the
guy who follows him and his 2000 years old is basically the opposite of the main character whereas he doesnt care and seems to want to trample over people for his enjoyment from the way he talks, and it is impossible to kill him because he will return again, I wouldnt be surprised if Henry does find a way to make himself mortal but uses it instead on the other guy in the end, basically showing the person who doesnt want to die will die and the person who wants to eventually die will live forever

Really liked the show, while the second episode was... a little to blunt the third one was good.
So far I'm enjoying this and SHIELD

This airs a day early in Canada so if you've caught the episode already, slap those spoiler tags on.

"The Art of Murder"

Memories brought on by an investigation into a wealthy matriarch's death torment Henry.

I'm have enjoyed watching this every week. This serves a 'least objectionable programming' niche in my life.

Enjoyable cast/characters. It's just totally benign. I have found myself looking forward to watching the most recent episode whenever it pops up on my DVR.

It's been so long I don't even remember the pilot. Was it New Amsterdam that was pushed back a whole year?

Not sure if a year, but AFAIR there was a huge delay.

Can't even find preair pilot these days. But it was a lot better. Few extra scenes heavily changed the whole tone. For example, he actually started drinking again after staying sober for 40 years.
I actually like Forever a lot more, because they keep the cases more interesting and the main arc (finding 200p years old immortal stalker vs finding true love) is more interesting. But New Amsterdam had the very best example of melancholy of immortal human I've ever seen.

Well, the dude in Forever is also looking for something that will break his curse or whatever, I'm sure it won't happen but it would be hilarious if it turned out to be true love and that the woman from the past wasn't it.
