I mean .... What?
KEENE, N.H. — Violent disturbances near Keene State College during an annual pumpkin festival lasted until early Sunday and involved dozens of arrests and injuries, as well as police in riot gear using tear gas to disperse crowds.

Keene State student Ellery Murray told The Boston Globe that she was at a party Saturday that had drawn a large crowd when people started throwing things.

“People were just throwing everything they could find — rocks, skateboards, buckets, pumpkins,” she said. “People just got too drunk.”

The parties around the school coincided with the annual Keene Pumpkin Festival, where the community tries to set a world record of the largest number of carved and lighted jack-o-lanterns in one place.

I went to school there for a year. Some people just went just get way too drunk and riled up, I'm not surprised this reached a boiling point this year.

Really unfortunate how everything turned out. Pumpkin Fest was easily one of the coolest things during my time there, just seeing the whole community come together and seeing the town population literally triple was really interesting. I'm positive that not every kid in school there is to blame, but a lot of them are..

I've been to that fest a couple times. This is one of those "this is why we can't have nice things" moments. Though it seems to have happened mostly at the college and not at the fest itself.

Spent four years there myself. The city is small and doesn't hold that amount of people well. There's not much to do either, other than look at pumpkins.

I thought this was fun:

Whites riot over pumpkins in NH and Twitter turns it into epic lesson about Ferguson

One rioter, Steven French, told the Keene Sentinel that he traveled from Haverhill, Massachusetts to attend the festival because he knew it would be “f*cking wicked.”

“It’s just like a rush. You’re revolting from the cops,” he continued. “It’s a blast to do things that you’re not supposed to do.”
The police viewed the behavior of French and his cohorts less favorably, barricading streets and firing tear gas into crowds in an effort to disperse them.

Meanwhile, on Twitter, users marveled at how different the police response to these unruly young adults was to another recent event:
The kids at #keenestate threw beer cans at cops and got arrested. Mike Brown threw his hands up and caught SIX shots

"Why are they tearing up their own community?" #keenepumpkinfest
White people in New Hampshire really need to do some self-reflection and regulate their animal impulses in the wake of #keenepumpkinfest.

Where are the leaders in the white community? They need to speak out #pumpkinfest

How many of the defiant white youth causing mayhem & destruction come from fatherless families? #PumpkinRiot

If white people continue to glorify pumpkin violence in their culture they deserve the spice-latte thug stereotypes. pic.twitter.com/VI8USeI9Mq
