Evil Within (PC) patched to give options to remove letterboxing, allow 60 FPS.

No patch notes yet so might be more. Personally it seemed like the mouse menu lag is better too.

It's still letterboxed in some sequences, like the menu, but gameplay itself has them removed.

Edit:

Patch Notes:

With this update, players with high-end PCs will be able to go in to their settings and toggle between running the game with a 30 FPS cap or a 60 FPS cap. Additionally, players will be able to disable the letterbox "black bars" in the game settings -- allowing you to maximize your screen's real estate.

Update Notes

Frame lock settings added
In settings, you can now toggle between a 30 FPS and 60 FPS cap.
Letterbox setting
UI toggle to disable the letterbox bars
Fixes gameplay issues when running at >30 FPS
Fixes for visual issues associated with removing letterbox framing
Achievements now work when console is enabled
Fix for game starting in windowed mode on first run
Minor localization fixes

Edit 2:

Demo added to Steam.

Don't care about the letterboxing, I just want to load my Ch11 save without crashing. I hope this inadvertently fixes this for me :/

Edit: Nope still crashes. Fuck this.

I hope the option to remove letterboxes comes to consoles as well

X360 please! The letterbox is one of my few gripes with the game.

That isn't possible from a technical perspective.

That setting increases the resolution for a game already struggling with performance.

In-game options you mean?

And how do they implement the cutting of the black bars with this setting?

Hopefully they have decoupled the FOV from the aspect ratio.

What the game looks like with Cinema Mode turned off on the options menu, no console commands or outside trainers used.

Screen not by me, though.

I'm mid-way through. I think I'm going to keep the black bars for the first play through.

Hope this actually helps with frame rate issues, and not just making the console commands a menu option.

Cool.

I may buy it once I upgrade my graphics card. My aging 1GB radeon 6870 won't like it. At all.

I have an oc'd i7 and 16gb of ram, so the graphics card is letting my rig down big time

You shouldvbe able to achieve performance comparable or better to the consoles with that card.

Evil Within can get to 30 FPS with max settings on a toaster, problems arise when going over that point however.

Glad they listened to customer feedback.

Or maybe someone from the dev team saw all the PC screens with the black bars removed and went "holy shit it looks so much better now! we should totally do that". :p

The UI placement is bugging me now.

Bright side is you can turn the UI off, how I play the game (as said, not my screenshot). Sebastian shows his health well enough by his animations, and if you need to know you can always check on the inventory screen).

does this mean no update for consoles?
I would happily pay for the option to increase the fov, the black bars can stay if they really have to but my god the game would be so much better with an improved fov.
Please no responses about how the fov was a clever directors choice.

dat artistic vision, dat cinematic feel

I finished the game a few days ago with the Widescreen fix. The worst part was forcing myself to play at 30 FPS, because my 680 didn't get to stable 60, and id Tech 5 doesn't support SLI.

Well, the worst part was the game itself, but that's another discussion to be had.

My computer (i5, 8GB, 560 GTX ti) couldn't even run this shit at 20 fps. So fuck this game and its 'optimization'.

Hm. Yeah, that doesn't sound bad.

Until this point though, I've been able to hit very high settings or even ultra at near 60fps, vsync'd. Dark Souls 2 is a good example - 60fps, high settings, locked triple buffering, 1080p. I've been used to playing on the PC with the highest settings.

...until now. As soon as the next-gen console ports started, I've realized I need to upgrade. I'll get a GTX970 at some point. 4GB of DDR5 ram sounds adequate.

It seems they're admitting with this fix that these were implemented due to performance issues, rather than trying to make the game feel cinematic.

It's too bad everybody's hiring Ubisoft's PR team as of recent.

I've been playing with Flawless Widescreen since the beginning, so never had the letterbox outside of the first time I booted up the game and laughed at how ridiculously claustrophobic it made things.

Does this letterbox removal option also fix the FOV so you see more instead of just zooming and cropping?

wow this came at the right time, i literally stopped playing this after i couldn't deal with the combination of letterboxing and a close FOV

You can move it on a horizontal level at least (unless they patched in vertical movement of the HUD), but yeah, I played the game with the HUD off though. Looks way better.

That's good to hear. I'll probably play with the UI off as well when I get around to playing the game. This game was actually one of my motivations for getting a new PC, after seeing how poorly the PS4 version runs.

The main problem with using Flawless Widescreen though is that aiming with the sniper rifle is really glitchy. Hopefully that's not the case here. I'm going to try it out as soon as the download is done.

Can they increase the FOV while keeping the bars without losing performance, though?
