Beamdog, developers of Baldur's gate & Icewind Dale EE, got Vita devkits! OMG

Oh so the enhanced editions got good reception?
Always wanted to pick them up but was unsure.

Yeah, nothing wrong with them. The problem is that they are a little overpriced for what they offer. Technically, you could just grab the vanilla versions off gog.com and mod them up to EE standards if you want to invest the time in that.

EEs are totally worth it when they go on sale

Do we know if they're doing Icewind Dale 2 as well?

I kinda feel like those games would control horribly on Vita, but ... I would buy them regardless. The idea of playing a nice CRPG in bed before falling asleep is too good to pass on.

Gimme a retail release of Baldur's Gate please!
I would so love to experience BD on the go on dat glorious OLED.

MINSC AND BOO FOR LIFE!

RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSK!

Although those games are great, the last thing the vita needs is more ports.

Steam got Vita ports.

While I would love to play Icewind Dale on the train, how would this actually work?

Touchscreen controls, sure, but the UI would be tiny. Also, how do you get a reasonably sized viewing area while still keeping the character sprites large enough to control easily?

I'm skeptical, but hopeful.

well, the game is already available for the iPhone too, that's even smaller and zero physical buttons.

I would hope they would spend a little time giving the Vita version an enhanced UI with most buttons in use.

EVERYTHING should be on Vita!

If you want brand new games from western developers you should buy games like these(like the upcoming Duke Nukem 3d) to give the message that Vita owners love great western games and to demonstrate that Vita is a viable console for western developers.

I would buy them d1 just to encourage other western developers to do the same, i would pay an insane amount of money for Might & Magic VI and Heroes of Might & Magic III for Vita(but also for a good Sim City, Caesar 3, Starcraft, Red Alert and so on...)

It's available on iOS, but is it playable on an iPhone?

I can imagine it on an iPad, but even the iPad mini is significantly bigger than a iPhone or Vita screen.

hehe, that's up to the size of your fingers.

But yeah, a Vita custom UI where you could toggle stuff with triggers, use the cursor with analogue stick, tap stuff/icons on screen and use all face buttons/dpad arrows for shortcuts would make it superior.

I recently bought Icewind Dale with the intention of playing it on my iPad. It auto-downloaded to my iPhone 5 and though I intended to delete it, I realized that even though it was a bit cramped on the screen, being able to just pull it out of my pocket on the subway made all the difference. The buttons are pretty damn small, but since the game can be paused, it actually works much better than you might think. If only it supported cloud saving, it would be perfect. As it is, the decision of where to play the game (iPad or phone) is much more difficult than I expected.

"The last thing the Vita needs". For what? For being a succesful device? It's not going to happen.

Right now what "the Vita needs" are games that can satiate it's smallish enthusiast fanbase. Those games are great, and there really isn't any game like this on the system. So this is awesome.

We'll finally have some isometric RPG on the system. And one that you can play for a ton of hours. I can't see any problem.

Playable or not it is on iPhone right? So it can be on Vita too :P

If the screen is too little for the details there's always Vita TV, and if the screen is too small for precise touch controls there are always physical controls to help, so there are no excuses ;)

This is the original BG

It's only 640x480 and buttons look big enough to me ;)

So I'll take that as a "no", then. ;)

The classic UI on the Vita screen would not work IMO. The only other option is developing a new UI just for the Vita, which seems unlikely, given that I imagine it would be a significant development (my speculation) for a port to a niche handheld.

I dunno, I'd love it to work out well, but I just don't see it.

EDIT:

Ah thanks. Maybe it could work then.

Great news, meant to play this game for a while since my friends have been raving about this game since its initial release. Being able to do so on my favorite platform sounds nice.

From the upcoming Vita thread:

"We've got a vita dev unit now. Once we complete our current planned work we'll start poking it. We have an few internal Vita fanboys, so they keep hassling us for it."

DO THEM!
If they do this...omg. Someone hold me. Have to tell my bro this news.

For people saying the screen is small I've been playing BG1 and Icewind Dale on an Iphone. Can be a little tricky at time, especially with small chests, but it works great!(theres is an issue on the Iphone BG that you can hide the HUD and not recover it)

I've been begging for them to try the vita. Touch controls plus sticks for precision pointer movement! I'll be triple dripping for sure, I'm only sad there won't be a physical release.

I say this goes two fold - support for the vita and support for bringing back the best crpgs around. People seem a bit amiss about them but if you could have told me 15years ago the infinity engine game would be rereleased with continuing patch support and updates(new characters, new kits, implementation of
Mods/bug fixes and playable on a damn phone)I would have burned you alive for heresey. I am super excited about these rereleases and following them since day one.

Also making an original infinity engine game presimably based on Baldurs Gate called 'Adventure Y' featuring evil Gazebos, basically I got my Last Guardian.

And in 15 years maybe you will too!

Additionally I'd love for Vita to be an unofficial Legacy PC machine. Grim Fandango being an example but if I could play Morrowind, X-Wing hell even Enemy Territory I'd be elated. Nvidia Shield might already have that market though :( (or is that more for streaming? - apologies for ignorance)
