As announced on the official Codemasters forum:

Dear forum-goers!

Those of you that frequent the site and/or follow me on Twitter will know I have left the building (so to speak). I've little desire in debating the reasons for my leaving, what did/did not happen in the Formula One series over the years and why certain decisions were taken - that can perhaps come at a much later date and outside of this forum. For what it's worth I decided to resign even though F1 could be on the cusp of being bigger than it has ever been before. I want the F1 team, in particular the guys I spent many years working with, to take future games in the direction they feel comfortable with and without me casting a distracting shadow. My talking about what might have been helps nobody. I've every faith in them creating a fantastic title on the more powerful consoles next year. I won't engage in discussion, this is a goodbye post. I'm actually very excited to play the next title as a gamer rather than the developer this time around! The handling is where I had hoped we'd have been with the initial F1 2010 game. It's typical we would (they would?) reach that point as I decided to move on. An opportunity came along and I weighed everything up, for myself and my family. It was a difficult decision to make, indeed I agonised over it for some time because I thoroughly enjoyed myself and got to work on a series dedicated to a sport so close to my heart and with wonderful people to boot. I might even invest a few hundred pounds in a wheel and pedals setup... it's that good! But enough of that romantic nonsense! I'll only be accused of promoting the next game even though I won't benefit from it.

I wanted to post one final time to thank you, the guys and gals that take the time out to post (and read) on this, the official forum. Over the years I spent countless hours reading and sometimes even involving myself in the debates that raged in this small pocket of the Internet. You are important and I tried to impress this upon people. I got to appreciate the varied views on display. I understand it's difficult to convey your point of view in text alone and never took anything personally. My only regret is not getting to the point where I'd made the game I really wanted to make - because that, I feel, is what many of you would have liked to have played. Whether or not I'd ever be entirely happy I'm not sure - it might well be an impossible goal

Please, do try to get onboard with what the team are working incredibly hard to bring to a store near you in 2015. They have an enormous amount of passion and you can help fuel their desire to make the very best Formula One game. Those that wish to follow me on the next adventure, please do so. I'd love for you to come along. Those that want to blame me for anything and everything, as you were. I promise the current issues in the real world of Formula One are not of my making.

Thank you for your interaction, commitment and time. The F1 community made everything worthwhile. Au revoir.

Jenson for Drivers Champion in 2015 (who says us designer types can't dream?)

Steve

Sad to see him go but still excited for the current-gen F1 game next year. He joins Dovetail Games (Railworks, Train Simulator) as a Creative Director for their first flight sim:

On 9 July 2014, Dovetail Games announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft to release Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition on Steam in late 2014, titled Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition. It also announced that it will be developing and producing all-new flight simulation software based on Microsoft's flight technology, expecting to bring a release to market in 2015.

Sad to see all those rumors surrounding Codemasters Birmingham becoming more reasonable considering Steve actually hints at some problems behind the scenes...

Andy Gray and Mark Russell also left a couple of years ago and hinted at the same thing.

Who's next to leave from the original team? Lee Mather and Jason Darby are the only "Lead Designers" left, right?

He lasted surprisingly long considering how venomous the "fans" are. Although maybe that's not the only reason, the development probably isn't going as well as it should. Everyone was expecting next-gen F1 this year, not next year. Meanwhile they quickly put together Grid Autosport and F1 2014. I wonder how long Codemasters can last if the sales keep dropping especially with the F1 license being what it is.

I wonder which direction the team is leaning, more arcade or more sim. Codemasters F1 series is my go-to drive with AI game but I always wish it leaned slightly more towards sim racing. It's mostly fine with a wheel, but the handling could have a lot more depth too.

I still dislike how little AI options they have in their games but at least their AI is mostly competitive and at the same time knows when to give the player room. My favourite racing AI of recent years. It has flaws, but when actually racing with the AI, I can drive close to them, we can drive 2-3 wide through corners and they rarely crash into me. It's a small miracle compared to Forza, Assetto Corsa etc.

Well, apparently he couldn't wait to leave them it seems:

T4RG4: @AGRYGMER Technically my contract finishes next week but I had an agreement to 'exit' after last Friday's Xmas party.

Wonder what's going on there. As I haven't been following this closely, what are/were these rumors?

If he's talking about F1 2014, that's what made it my most disappointing game of the year.

He said next game, so I assume 2015 which is out early next year for once.
CM F1 games are bad so maybe we'll finally get a decent F1 games from CM after all the crap ones now.

We won't. That's a problem with Codemasters as a whole if hints from people leaving are to be believed.

These games have been on the decline for years, I can understand his frustration. 2010 was so fresh and exciting. The following years became so stale. Ironically, the best thing to happen to the series since 2010 was the classic 2013 mode.. Which was then removed from this year...

I feel like the year turn over just wasn't long enough for the more ambitious team members to create the additions they wanted. Not surprising guys are getting fed up and moving on. This development certainly doesn't fill me with much hope for the new gen version, however his praise of the gameplay seems positive.... Or whether that's a pat on the back for his buddies who are still in the team, who knows.

My worries exactly.

Or maybe he's crazy, who else would be responsible for the previous game's handling style decisions.

Codemasters HQ forced drastic development budget cuts after F1 2010 shipped because the F1 license is too expensive even considering the game sold really well. As a result workforce was heavily reduced to the point they had to outsource a big part of the game to Gogo Games.

I'm not going to give names in public (but if some mod wants I can give that info on PM) because I know Codemasters PR post on GAF and I don't want to give problems to anyone but this year I saw a conversation between a current developer and an ex-developer openly say that Codemasters HQ demanded a more arcade approach after F1 2011 against the wishes of Steve Hood and the Lead Designers.

Also Steve probably left because he suspects Codemasters will not renew their current license agreement with F1 (IRC it ends next year). They were able to overbid Activision (Bizarre would still be alive....) last time but if the rumors are true I doubt they can overbid Microsoft this time. Let's see if Playground Games can make a decent F1 game.

Man I am salivating at the thought of an F1 game by Playground Games, I just looked up their pedigree, mostly staff from studios that made awesome racing games.

Well keep dreaming.

Doubt they got the money to fund such a game. The rights to F1 won't be free. They would need help to fund a F1 game.
