12/19 USA Toys R Us Cancels Amiibo Pre-Orders in the middle of the Night

This is getting buried in the very fast moving Amiibo thread, so it was thought to give it a thread of its own so people can know about it.

Quoting myself from the Amiibo thread:

To explain again: It seems that ALL TRU pre-orders on things currently not in the store got cancelled. This includes Pit, Lucario, Captain Falcon and all of Wave 3.

Most are now back up for pre-order with limited quantities being enforced. Captain Falcon was available earlier but he may be sold out again now. Pit never re-emerged. There is no official statement from TRU as to why this was done other than people calling and getting "I don't knows" and claims that everything was cancelled due to overselling.

Theories could be anything from a mishap to a wide slate clean to make up for scalpers taking most of the stock and TRU realizing they fucked up. Redditors were also brute forcing in-store pre-orders so that potentially massively oversold things as well.

If you have pre-orders from TRU in the USA, check your orders.

Is that what the Amiibo thread was talking about? That's horrible.

I'll be picking up Yoshi as a gift today. He's in stock around me, luckily enough.

This whole situation seems fucked. Glad I'm getting mine from Japan.

I bet some people who preordered Lucario are extremely pissed right now.

preordered one three weeks ago, got my order cancelled last night, just woke up to find that preorders went back up and sold out ~5 minutes ago.

how fucking hard is it to handle preorders?

I just searched amiibo on their site and upcoming ones aren't showing up at all? No Lucario etc.

EDIT: Now suddenly they're showing up.

EDIT2: Now they're gone again, I click them and they say "no product specified."

fucking toys r us.

So they cancel your preorder then let other people take your reservation? That's all sorts of fucked.

I had a good one with Best Buy.

I preordered Little Mac for in-store pick-up on day one of preorders.
Yesterday they cancelled the order. When I spoke with them on the phone, they said they sold out too quick or something. "So the pre-order didnt meant anything?"... "No.".... "Ah."

So what's the problem with Amiibos - have Nintendo grossly underestimated the demand?

grossly.

I hope, one day, to find that Little Mac for list price.

So pissed. I had like 6 preorders with them, all canceled. I managed to get a Lucario in this morning but now someone said in the other thread they may cancel them as well.

Walmart still has many 3rd wave preorders available, go there, I did.

And then Target opens preorders for Rosalina at 5:30 AM EST, and usually gone by 6 AM.

I feel bad for those on the west coast.

Just re-ordered a Lucario from amazon.fr. Came to about $23 shipped to the US. I don't trust TRU to ship any preorders at this point.

Some people are convinced Nintendo is trying to MWU HA HA and create artificial demand to milk their hardcore fanboys, but to be honest Amiibos are /too/ limited. They're supposed to be a companion product to Nintendo's biggest game of the year that sells to children as well as adults.

I think it's much more likely this is Nintendo being Nintendo, and grossly undershipping Amiibo waves in order to avoid spend as little as possible while launching a new product. They regularly undership retail games as well these days. This is one of the downsides of panic Nintendo. They are tightening their belt and cutting every extraneous cost possible. It's probably a reason why US Club Nintendo rewards suck now - America is a big place, and pricey rewards have the potential to cost them a lot if a lot of people order them.

wait, there's no more little mac???

All of Wave 2 except for Luigi and Zelda seem to be in the fucking ether. Diddy is starting to come around but Little Mac is still perpetually out of stock everywhere and Best Buy is doing funky shit with him and their street dates.

Captain Falcon and Pit are god knows where.

Blame scalpers and the Reddit crew that was forcing preorders into a system that couldn't handle at many.

It seems TRU did the only thing they could reasonably do, which was do a fullscale cancellation and restart.

Nah, I'm going to blame TRU for accepting the orders in the first place, canceling everything instead of filling whatever orders they could, then putting preorders back up the next morning.

Except the massive amount of time and resources it would take to figure out which store could handle which preorders and what orders they came in would be outrageous. What Reddit was doing with those preorder numbers put extra preorders in stores well above the allocated amount.

For a business, this is really the only reasonable move they could make.

Having dealt with TRU's shit service very recently, I empathize with those that had to go through this with them as well. Hope many are able to recover or backup their orders elsewhere.

This can all be fixed by Nintendo doing a quick Nintendo Direct stating explaining what is going on and a final answer on "discontinued" amiibos.

Why the fuck does Nintendo get involved with this shit when they CONSISTENTLY cannot maintain supply of ANYTHING they sell that isn't software.

I know I should stay out of these threads because I find the whole idea of amiibos to be downright dumb, but I just love watching people squirm about absolutely meaningless junk.

Videogames are meaningless.

Seems silly to crap on people for liking something and expecting that when you preorder something that you should get it.

Mine got cancelled. Going to call and give them shit over it!!

Update, was told I would get the same price if they come back in stock and was given a $25 promo code for later use.

+1 for this. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean others don't care about it. There are plenty of things on Gaming side of GAF that I don't give a shit about but I don't go in their threads and have schadenfreude when they have difficulties.

More like...Amiinos?

Sorry for your losses.

You know, the only other video game thing I pre-ordered from Toys R Us was screwed up in the past too. I ordered Disney Infinity 1.0 back when it first came out. I was told my order was ready to pick up and when I went to the store their computers were down and I couldn't get the game. There was a special price/promotion for pre-ordering it online with in store pickup, so there was no incentive to cancel the order and just buy it on the spot. So, I had to wait a day or 2 before they fixed their computers and were able to sell it to me for the right price.

At some level, everything is meaningless. However, some things, like Amiibos, are more meaningless than others. It's kind of like different levels of infinity.

It's like how there's different levels of condescending. Like how some is passive aggressive shrugging, and some is just plain being a douche and thinking you're above something while posting on a video game forum. Really, just different levels.

This can all be fixed by Nintendo not being Nintendo and just supplying enough to meet demand.

Wow, I thought my preorder is safe while im off for a long vacation here.

Just got email from toyrus saying my Amiibo got cancelled.

It was pointed out in the Amiibo thread that Toys R Us are selling Lucario on EBay now.

I really don't understand how they have this so screwed up. I'm guessing they did this to better sell thru a certain quantity.
