Back in 2012 this was featured in DigInfo

Live2D, developed by Cybernoids, is the world's first drawing technology to enable 3D rendering of 2D images. This technology supports a variety of portable consoles and smartphones, and Live2D is already being utilized for games that take advantage of the unique characteristics of hand drawn artwork.

At present, the technology progressed this far
True 2D graphics. 360° realtime expression

Live2D Cubism, the current generation of Live2D technology, allows artists to create a model from single character illustration drawn from a given angle to animate within the range of 30~40° sideways. Live2D Euclid eliminates the range limitation by seamlessly integrating multiple illustrations drawn from various angles while each of which being deformed independently. A Live2D Euclid model can be rendered realtime in a 3D space, supporting not only modern CG animation but also interactive game development. It may further support game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine as well as virtual reality platforms like Oculus Rift. This fundamental and versatile technology will bring rich 2D content across various genres and media dominant today.

I've been in a dryspell and contemplated the thought of being alone forever. No longer will I need to worry. My dreams will soon become a reality.

That's really cool. It's only a matter of time before porn doujin games flood the market and anything else is drowned out in a sea of terror and expectations.

Oh god, reminded of No Face

I want to marry someone while looking like that. :3

Well, I want to look like that. I don't know what would happen in relationships...
It would be nice to meet someone nice, though..

You want to look like anime in real life? You know they don't look cute anymore in reality.

Wow...Please Japan, you guys need to create a JRPG with this technology.
I was like damn, I wished that was a Tales of game engine.

Some JRPGs already use this such as Summon Night 5, Oreimo psp, criminal girls, All neptunia games, madoka games etc.
As in the old tech, not the new euclid one.

that puzzling face
I can see the established franchises that use 2D busts and are above the super-financially-starved denomination potentially adopting this (e.g. Disgaea, Persona, Fire Emblem etc)

The forays that tried doing animated busts have been met with mixed success, like Agarest 2 (It's... ok, but even after getting used to it it's still in that bizarre uncanny valley zone)

Then again, if it didn't catch on since 2012..

Ah, I guess a lot of it has to do with a conscious decision w.r.t art style too. Didn't figure Neptunia actually used Live2D over actual 3D modelling.

Eh, that doesn't look too bad.

Though... I don't think that anime characters would look quite like that in real life. Final Fantasy XIV looks kind of like in between anime characters and realistic, and they look cute.

This kind of reminds me of if anime characters were real.

I mean as long as you think you look cute it kinda doesn't matter. But those types of features do not look cute, but rather really weird and unnatural .

Would be interesting to see in conjunction with something like guilty gear xrd's animation's style of cutting down on tweening.
