Into the Stars by Fugitive Games - Kickstarter by ex-DICE vets [$85k goal]

A single player open-world journey through a distant solar system. Scavenge resources, manage your ship and lead your crew in combat

Two former DICE Leads, an established Art Director and a veteran designer from the Battlefield, Lost Planet and Shadows of the Damned games bring you Into the Stars for PC & Mac.

Take the role of Captain as you explore a massive solar system in search of a new home for humanity. Outfit your ship, select your crew and set off on a journey where you must scavenge resources, shelter civilians and outrun a hostile alien force in order to survive.

Featuring an original soundtrack from Jack Wall, the man behind the unforgettable score for Mass Effect.

Complete Control: Take command of an inexperienced crew and guide them through a solar system packed with mystery and danger. From your seat on the bridge you'll steer the ship, manage resources and control your ship's systems while engaging friendly and hostile aliens. Can you make the right choices and reach the planet we'll call home?

Sounds pretty awesome. Single player space exploration game, like Interstellar with aliens and a soundtrack from the Mass Effect composer, I'm in.

With such a low goal for seemingly high production values, and them not specifying just how much of this project was fronted by them already, I am left to assume this is something like a glorified FTL.

Looks interesting but I'm kind of confused where the money is going. 85k seems kind of small for a open world space game... They'd have to have a lot done already for it to be enough.

Cool, more space sim pls.

Elite Dangerous was a massive disappointment for me, lets hope this one is better.

They left DICE but they didn't leave behind the job titles.

The issue that I have with the recent space sims is that I want to land and explore planets. Yes, I know this is a lot of work and requires procedural generation. I refuse to play Elite Dangerous until the planetary exploration expansion comes out. I'm looking forward to No Man's Sky as well, but that seems to be a more arcade experience. However, Oregon Trail and FTL are indeed awesome games to use as inspiration.

It sounds like you are waiting for Star Citizen. It will have full-on 1st-person shooter ground combat, as well as a massive universe to explore, and it has top-tier production values.

Hey all - Happy to answer any questions you might have!

The game has been in development for a while now and we're on solid footing, but we can't do it all with just the 4 of us. The Kickstarter is geared towards matching the quality gameplay/visuals we've solidified with a high amount of polish, compelling audio and a killer soundtrack from Jack Wall.

I have a couple of questions. Will there be any planetary exploration? I remember there is a scene in the Kickstarter video where it seems like the ship is descending through the clouds.

Also, is this game using procedural generation at all to generate planets/asteroids, etc?

You guys cite titles of inspiration like FTL and Oregon Trail, but it's hard to tell from the description if this game is a rogue-like in the sense of the aformentioned titles. Is this a randomly generated, 1-2 hour per attempt experience? Or something of a more measured, pre-built game?

Thanks!

So does that explain why the Kickstarter delivery date is July this year as its just the final 6 months to finish it and get it done? Looks great though, can't wait.

I don't think that's a reasonable funding goal for a game like this. Should be at least 300k minimum.

Not sure I should back on those grounds.

Hey Das-J, thanks for answering questions. What is the space combat like? I'm getting a bit of a Star Trek vibe. Is it straight up dog fighting, or perhaps more strategic?

Yeah, normally I'd agree with you there, even the fact that they only have 4 members sounds small, but if the game is already as far along as the video suggests, I could see it working. For example, perhaps all the core gameplay systems are working, but now they mostly just need more money to outsource art and music assets, while the main team basically just works on their own dime. Also, the lack of planetary exploration, and survival nature of the gameplay makes it seem more feasible.

Think of Kickstarter goals not as how much money the game takes to create but rather an arbitrary amount of additional income the creators want to add an arbitrary amount of polish to bring the game up to an arbitrary quality level.

Do you think FTL really only took $10k to make (which is what they were asking for)

We'll try to address questions the best we can but keep in mind the game is still in development and we'll continue to dive deeper as we move along.

Though you can send Landing Parties and Mining Rigs down to planetary surfaces, overarching constraints prevent us from letting you run around. Our focus is on exploration of the solar system and though the encounters in space will be randomized they’re not procedurally generated.

Into the Stars falls somewhere in-between. We're trying to hand craft the experience, while using rogue-like elements with factors of randomness to keep it fresh.

You got it – This raise takes the place of “Finishing Funds” that are traditionally sought from publishers. We want to avoid early-access, but need the KS funds to make that possible and truly do the game justice.

Star Trek was a HUGE inspiration for our combat. It’s volley-based but frantic as you’ll have to manage your ship / crew while fighting off enemies.

Right, but people have to take time off of whatever they're doing and get paid reasonable amounts commensurate to what they'd get in the real world to actually survive for however long it takes them to make the title.

I am not convinced the current crew can do that on $85k and meet the games vision. And judging by the history of Kickstarters for games like this, i'm not off the mark. Intelligent funding goals is one of the first thing I look for in Kickstarters before backing.

Totally get where you're coming from, Amir0x.

But the 85k doesn't represent the entirety of our development budget. These funds are specifically focused on additional polish, a complete audio package and Jack's score.

Looks quite interesting, hopefully there's a lot of customization. FTL is a great game so even if this turns out to just something along the lines of a graphically improved version of that (as in not too many gameplay differences), i'll probably get it at some point.

Space.
"Oregon Trail meets FTL in an open world."
Jack Wall

You are doing this on purpose. You know these are all things I fully support -_-
Good luck! Hoping it turns out great.

That Game Dev Story inspiration reference threw me off a bit while watching their video. The ship and the universe seem nice but I don't think I'd like that game all that much. It does seem like a worthwhile bet though and the funding goal is quite modest, surprisingly so, which makes me guess they either put a lot of their own money into it or perhaps the scope is not as grand as they imply it is.

The concept was specifically geared towards trolling you, but we didn't think you'd catch on so soon... :)

The Game Dev inspiration is focused around crew management and is merely a supplement to the vast inspiration we drew from FTL, Oregon Trail and Out There.

Looks pretty exciting, getting some Star Trek: Bridge Commander vibes. This would be so fun in VR too just chillin in the captain's chair and exploring the universe. Multiplayer would be amazing but probably too ambitious for what they're asking.

So do we know if we can move around the cockpit/insides of the ships? Being able to travel and stargaze while going from place to place is an oddly specific but really cool thing I'd like to do that seems kind of rare for all of these new space sims. Since it's based on resource and crew management I'm guessing it's more focused on the cockpit and UI from that standpoint/area of the ship. That's fine, but I was just wondering, thanks!

I voted for it on Greenlight. I am pretty picky with where my gaming dollars go. Like that I have a way to participate even without paying...

Awesome, thanks for answering questions! I have to say, the game sounds and looks great and I'd love to be a backer, but I'd like to know if you have any plans for a Linux port, even if it's at a later date.

Thanks!
