PC Gamer: "PC Master Race" makes people uncomfortable

OP piece by PC Gamer

I obviously realize that no one is actually saying that PC gamers are the preferred people of Hitler. That’s absurd, and it’s supposed to be absurd. It’s a joke. It just isn’t a joke worth keeping around at the expense of making people uncomfortable about the hobby we're supposed to be promoting—and, selfishly, I’d rather not look like a tasteless jackass. I’d be mortified if my friends and family thought I were part of something called the “PC Master Race.” They don’t get the context, and even if I explained it to them, a half-forgotten seven-year-old internet joke doesn’t expunge the historical meaning from the phrase, which refers to the Aryan race, which is a term still used by people with swastika tattoos. I think I’ll go ahead and distance myself from the Aryan Brotherhood, if you don’t mind.
This isn’t a plea for political correctness—not associating oneself with Nazi pastiches is just good living. It’s fun to treat our hobby like a club and build camaraderie, but I don’t think a reference to white supremacy is going to encourage club membership.
PC gaming’s image is uniquely in the hands of its community, and PC gaming as a “brand” shouldn’t be synonymous with a meme. Given the choice, would Xbox fans really want to be represented by Microsoft’s marketing? I doubt it. And yet, with 300,000 subscribers on the PC Master Race subreddit, it seems we’ve chosen advice animals and MS Paint scribbles as our ambassadors. I know there are better ways to express our enthusiasm and creativity.

No fun allowed?

For me it's not as much the phrase itself as it is how annoying some people that use it are

That's why it's humour.
It's humour because it uses serious matter to make joking comparisons with something trivial.
God.

It's stupid. People can use it as a joke (it's not a funny one, though), but I often see it used with actual, pretty genuine meaning behind it and it's just dumb.

It's a fair point. I will stop using the term PC master race when PC Gamer stops calling me a PC Gamer (I don't identify with 'gamer')

edit: obvious jk. I don't use the term PC master race and probably never will, but I could definitely see for people who aren't on the inside that it's ... not the best joke ever?

I don't think I've ever seen the phrase used in any context other than people satirically referring to elitist PC gamers- I can't remember ever seeing it used in earnest.

Yeah it's pretty much just gotten to the point where if I see it used I assume the poster is a douche.

It shouldn't be used if you have any modicum of respect for people who have had to deal with issues of a "master race" in any form or fashion. It's not about fun or "it's a joke!" - it doesn't need to be, so get away from it.

I play a lot on PC and it is my main non-handheld platform. That said, I find the master race comments extremely obnoxious.

It doesn't matter if it is meant as a joke or not. Like the waifu comments in RPG and some other Japanese game threads, it is obnoxious and make people uncomfortable.

On top of that, the master race term has quite the... complicated story,

Parody article? I don't even game on PC and don't mind the term. It's a dumb meme but nothing about it seems offensive or degrading.

I agree wholeheartedly with the article.

PC Master Race is supposed to be satire... It's just gotten a little out of hand.

What's it satirizing? From what I can tell all the "PC master race," people are doing is appropriating Nazi terminology. A good portion of the people who use it are arguably being ironic or some shit but that doesn't make it satire.

Yes anyone who uses that phrase is obviously advocating the purchase and use of PC's for Caucasian people only.

The bleeding heart movement on the internet continues as strong as ever.

Why so serious?

Honestly, even as a pc only gamer, I've just never really thought of it in such a literal and narrow veiwpoint.

You're just mad they used you in one of their gifs.

The master race schtick is one of the things that makes me embarrassed to be a PC gamer.

I remember some French gaming website even published it as part of their goty. Just, no.

I have always imagined this guy when i hear the term. I have never connected it to nazis for some reason.

It's just a silly thing and some people take it way too seriously.

it's a disgusting term. props to the editor for coming out against it. I like very few internet terms and I wish they so intertwined with games and game "culture"

PC Master Race is a legitimate argument though. All else being equal, PC is the best platform for getting the best out of video games.

And I'm saying this as someone that has never owned a Gaming PC.

A comic that was mocking PC gamers referring to their elitest attitude as though it were Nazi supremacy in comparison to the "dirty console peasants" that they lorded it over, the term was never a compliment to PC gamers it was the opposite. People just took it and used it in a self mocking fashion.

I always thought it was something to troll console owners on the internet. But then I heard people say it around my campus and my cousin even said it.

Its sad really.

The funny thing is that the origin of the thing started from a Zero Punctuation video, in which Yahtzee used the term sarcastically.

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Someone having no context sees or hears that term and says "what in the fuck".

It's a ridiculous, juvenile and offensive term and it needs to be purged out of the "gaming culture" lexicon.

I'm glad someone finally said it.
