IGN reports the following:

April 28, 2006 - With Microsoft, the rumors are always true. The next iteration in Bungie Studios' Halo series will appear at E3 2006 in video form at its Tuesday, May 9 news conference, IGN learned today from independent sources who recently spoke with Microsoft executives.

The video is allegedly two minutes long, although its contents weren't divulged. We're guessing a wild breathtaking battle on Earth. Knowing Microsoft, the publisher will want to show all real, in-game engine footage to counter Sony's fantastical CG videos from E3 2005. When Microsoft was contacted, the company issued its standard reply, "We don't comment on speculation and rumors."

E3 is where console manufacturers, publishers, and developers lay down their best hand for hopes of creating buzz and interest leading into the fall season. And E3 2006 is perhaps one of the most crucial for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, as each stakes their plot in the next-generation landscape.

Diehard Halo fans shouldn't be too surprised. Bungie is notorious for taking its time, and the game is not likely to come out until 2007. Microsoft's most valuable franchise has been out of the limelight since last year's Map Pack, a set of additional multiplayer maps for 2004's Halo 2. Microsoft has edged away from talking about the next Halo all year long, except to acknowledge Founder Bill Gates' cautionary statements to Sony, claiming that when Sony readies PS3, Halo 3 will launch day and date with it. Microsoft since retracted the statement, claiming Halo 3 will be ready when Bungie is finished.

Recently, however, the company has started to roll up its proverbial Halo sleeves again, acknowledging Halo 3's existence. Microsoft Game Studios' General Manager Shane Kim, in a conversation with New Zealand Website Stuff.co.nz, said:

"You mean the mythical Halo 3? I mean, it's silly to deny its existence when the chairman of MS (Bill Gates) announced it, but I have nothing to announce now, but expect there to be a significant announcement at E3."

You heard it. Expect first details, footage, and wild Halo fanboy Love come E3.

2min is shorter than what I was expecting though. Hopefully it's more than just Master Chief walking from on side of the to the ship to another arming himself.

when was this announced?

In next week's issue of Time Magazine--which features Gates holding the Xbox 360 on the cover--Gates mentioned plans for the release of the much-anticipated follow-up to the best-selling console shooter. In a parenthetical sidebar in the article, Time says the following:

"Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

While Microsoft reps were not available for comment as of press time, Gates' comments appear to confirm the theory that Microsoft will release Halo 3 either simultaneously or near the release of Sony's next-gen console. It also marks further official confirmation that a third Halo is indeed in the works and will be released for the Xbox 360.

Although such statements might be interpreted as grandstanding, such a maneuver definitely would have an impact. Halo 2 sold more than 6.5 million copies to date and is credited with doubling the subscriber base of Xbox Live from around 750,000 to more than 1.5 million. It is also credited by industry-watchers as one of the main reasons for boosting sales of the original Xbox last holiday season.

MS never gets to have a supprise..every year someone lets the cat out of the bag early.

Hopefully this 2 minute demo will be closer to the final product than the last one.

Why is that? Do they just have a big mouth and can't help themselves?

I hope this trailer will be somewhat representative of the final game, contrary to the Halo 2 one.

And I also hope this game has an actual ending, and that the single player doesn't suck.

Halo 2 was only really good for the multiplayer.

I predict a bright future for this thread.

They should have kept it a secret. Now they'll probably won't have any surprises besides Forza 2.

People would be surprised to see Halo3, without IGN's report..? I've been kind of expecting it, at least.

Microsoft has at least one surprise at E3, which is developed by Rare Ltd. Well, perhaps it isn't really a surprise, but just unexpected. (I think it's that Stampede game)

I don't think anyone was questioning if Halo 3 would show up but now we know when and how long the trailer will be(also, taking away small hope for something playable). It's not a mystery anymore.

When was the last time MS was able to keep anything secret? Forza 2 isn't much of a suprise if they show it, most people are expecting it just like a Halo 3 video.

WOOOOOOOOOO! Master Chief is coming! He wants to kick some ass Badly!
Halo3 = GOTS :D

You're only referring to the graphics, right?

I'm referring to the graphics, to the "goddamned apocalypse" that never was, to the entirely scripted gameplay video, with Brutes hijacking a Warthog, you going through a whole city blowing up cars and whatnot, a cutscene with Elites falling from the sky in pods. All these things that the final game didn't have.

Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'Its perfect,' Kutragi says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day MS launches [Halo 3], and they walk right into Playstation 3.'

fixed for actual relationship between the two in the real world

From what I've learned when Joseph Staten was at Northwestern University last weekend (made a stop here coming from New Zealand talking with Peter Jackson), he said the last three levels of Halo 2 were cut out.

Hmm...

I can honestly say that stuff never bothered me, it was a demonstration after all, but I can see why some got angry since Microsoft heavily marketed Halo 2 based on Earth being under attack and all. I was quite happy with the New Mombassa level we got in the end, would have liked to have seen a first aid area like in the video. It was kinda odd that some of the voices got re-recorded and for the worse imo, but we did get the alien pods in gameplay instead.

It is worth remembering that that video with the brutes and such wasn't the first Halo 2 teaser we got, instead it was the one in the space station with Master Chief going down the life and then into space so don't build your hopes up too much for the E3 video incase it is similar to that. (even though I liked that one :D )

Edit: Forgot about the cool Covenant Wraith like mortors in the video, I would like to see them in the sequel. I think they were on the beach on the New Mombasa level in Halo 2 but they never did anything.
