Project Cars - PC vs. PS4 graphics comparison (YouTube)

-SD-

Banned
This one is from PC Games Hardware.

Shows a number of still scenes. Probably because YouTube's low video bit rate fits badly for doing graphics comparisons.

EDIT: Higher quality/bit rate version: http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Project-CARS-PC-238576/Specials/Technik-Test-1148972/

Lower quality version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUZanIi5DiM

So, not still images, but scenes without player or camera movement in them.

Notable differences:

- Lack of anisotropic texture filtering on PS4
- higher quality lighting, reflections, shadows, antialiasing and ambient occlusion on PC
- lower resolution textures on PS4.

EDIT: These were taken from the PCGH version.

Some textures actually looks better on PS4. There is also some color correction done on the PS4 which makes the picture look less "flat".

but the PC is definitely winning in terms of reflections! Much better than PS4.

Better IQ, better textures for PC while on PS4 looks still quite good. But we don't know which detail level was set on PC.

lol am sorry, but i dont see any of this...care to elaborate?

The PC is winning in terms of reflections, shadows, AF and AA.
I didn't see any textures that were better in the PS4 version

The railing in that scene near the sea looks really ugly in the PS4 version. What's up with the white shimmery lines?

This looks to be a great alternative to DC on PS4! At least gameplay wise because this is destroyed by DC's visuals, IMO.
We'll see with the pad in hands.

It's great to see more PC-at-heart games being nicely ported on consoles these days.

I agree that it is minor things, but it's some of the background textures that caught my eye. For example the carvings in the building in the back. For me it "pops" more in the PS4 version compared to the PC version. And then the blue barrier just looks so single colored blue in the PC version.

But I also expected the gap to be much larger between PC and PS4. So I may just be happy that the PS4 still looks quote good, despite missing reflections, shadows, AF and AA compared to the PC version, as stated by gogogow

I don't see that at all.
I just see that in first still PC has blueish look to it.
In the second still the ps4 has this blue look.
So I guess thats due to time of day maybe.

Other than that textures seem to be pretty much the same, no clear advantage on either side.
I also don't see a lack of AF. It might not be as high as on PC but its definitely there.
Water looks a bit better on Ps4 but I suppose thats also due to different lighting.
Shadows are smoother on Ps4 and blockier on PC, but shadowresolution is a bit higher on PC.
Shadows under the car are soft on PC and hard on Ps4.

Overall the differences are so minimal, I'd say they look the same.

Di.... did I just see Escort Mk1's racing (2nd video)? I haven't really paid too much attention to this as I thought Driveclub had scratched my racing itch..... But this changes everything!

Oh, and yeah, PC looks better, but PS4 looks plenty good too =)

Yes they are in the game.

I can see Driveclub helping Project Cars sales quite a bit. Driveclub is the first driving game I have played since Burnout Paradise, but I would like to move onto a driving game with a bit more depth and Project Cars looks to offer that. Its almost like Driveclub is a gateway drug.

Fair comparison, btw, that's how you do a comparison with screenshots. I see little to distinguish the two, I do prefer the PS4 version's warmer color palette though makes the games look less sterile as it's not exactly the best looking racer. PC does have better AF though.

Hold up, what is that smearish mark on the blue wall on the PS4 side, don't think it's a reflection.

As much as I enjoyed Driveclub, I do get a bit fed up driving super cars all the time. But mainly I'm just hyped cos my first car was an Escort Mk2 and my mate had a Mk1.

Yuck, look at that ground ont he PS4.

Sorry, but AF is CRITICAL in a racing game where you're always seeing a big fat ground texture on an oblique pain. It takes up 50% of the screen for christ sakes! Add AF to the poor PS4 version already.

Dude. The Group A RS500 Cossie and the Group 5 Zakspeed Capri are in there too.

Mmm hmm. Those three alone justify my purchase.

Aren't Project Cars cars running at 250k-300k polys on Ultra, while the PS4 is comparable to high (60k-80k a shot)?

Truth.

According to the details, it has also been confirmed that each drivable car in the console versions of the game has about 60,000 polygons. On the other hand, cars in the PC version of the game running on Ultra high settings feature polygons between 200,000 to 300,000, and the number comes down to 60,000 when the game is running on high settings. Project CARS comes with normal maps to cover up for low polygon count on consoles.

Not that big a difference. I presume the PC build is running on a pretty decent/expensive rig, and if so the PS4 version holds up surprisingly well. Saying that though the graphics hardly look flattering from these examples. In motion actually racing from the VVV video I've seen the game can look pretty good (though nothing comes close to Driveclub's lighting and weather package). The fact it's a proper sim running at 60fps and can have a ton of cars on track I'm happy enough with it though :)

Not as much of a difference as I would have expected. But PC version clearly takes the cake.

I pray the 60fps is solid for the PS4 version, It's been a while since I've played a good sim.

Totally agree, its going to be great to drive classic cars around iconic tracks. Driveclub would really benefit from a classic car selection.

The benchmarks are with S2X enabled...

SMAA + MSAA 2x ? That seems pretty standard to me, judging by the performance you would almost expect Supersampling or something.

The max settings just seem inefficient judging by the graphical gap with the PS4 and thats running 60FPS ?

MSAA is hugely expensive in deferred engines. Yes, even 2x.
The performance is expected.

It's the preview build by the way, there is still optimization time.

If they manage to pull of 60 fps on PS4 with visuals like that then I'd say they've done extremely well. It's quite comparable.

I played it last August on PS4 and it was running at a rather unstable frame-rate (40-60 fps, is what it felt like if I recall).

Meh, road textures turn into a blur the moment you gain any speed anyway. So I'm not really too bothered about racers not having good AF.

Why can I see the end and beginning of a water wave animation loop at 1:20 on the PC side (I'm assuming it will be in the PS4 as well)?

Thanks didn't know that ;) I'll just stick to post processing AA then. The benchmarks looked very intimidating for what was on display.

40 fps at 1080p and 2xmsaa w/ pcars visuals is not at all what id consider expected. msaa is no longer that expensive when properly implemented in dx11 on the last 2 generations of both vendors hardware.

edit - forgot to add that msaa in pcars is a pretty small performance hit.
