Need some anime recommendations to watch with the mom (just finish space bros)

Moved back to the parents place because my new job is 15 min away. Give me the opportunity to help out with stuff while saving on living to pay off loans quicker. Mom was injured in a car accident a while back, so i've been massaging her neck every night for an hour or so while we watch assorted tv shows on netflix and assorted chinese dramas.

We were watching columbo when I humored her to watch some anime ("cartoons are for kids!"), but she ended up enjoying Detective conan for the 450+ eps we marathoned over a few months. Took a break from that and we just finished watching Space Brothers tonight.

Was wondering what to watch next before going back to conan. No doubt she won't be into moe moe pantsu shows, and english isn't her native language so I doubt bullshit scifi would work well.

Thinking of maybe Ippo?

The shows she enjoys are mostly detective stuff these days (murder she wrotes, columbo, csi etc).


Got CR Premium, Funimation, Netflix, Hulu Plus, and a pretty decent dvd/bluray collection.

Wait, are those on Netflix? What region are you in?
 
Happiness. It has an explosive performance by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Don't read any synopsis or anything like that as the plot is easily spoiled.

I know you said anime recommendations but if she liked Murder She Wrote, try a couple of episodes of Poirot. It should be on Netflix.
 
Haha man I don't think I could marathon 450+ eps of Conan and I love that show.

Maybe some Ghibli stuff? That tends to be a good safe choice. Or Tezuka's works?

Though, going by experience... Maybe try out a few Korean dramas instead? :P
 
Ippo sounds good. I just started Parasyte myself, not sure what your mom would think of that one, lol. Maybe if she loved John Carpenter's The Thing.

Edit: Can't go wrong with Studio Ghilbi either, maybe give Akira a try!
 
Terror in Resonance, it would work really well with your detective bent, imo. So would any of the Ghost in the Shell stuff, but the scifi and wordy level would probably be too high.

I agree with you. I learned about it from a fraternity brother of mine (before we were fraternity brothers and just dorm hall-mates). We've shown it to other brothers and college friends; they all love it, and I'm the only one who watches anime. The dub truly transcends barriers. It not being on AnimeGAF's Definitive Anime List is a fucking shame.
 
Based on her love of detective stuff, maybe Death Note? Kind of a reverse detective show. I don't know if there are many good mysteries out there for anime, or maybe I'm not thinking of them. I guess people are saying Monster is a good one here.

For other stuff that I actually enjoyed and had some mystery elements to them: Hyouka, House of Five Leaves, Mushishi, and From the New World.

Also there was this pretty good jdrama that I watched a while ago whose name I can't remember. It was basically this guy who solved mysteries with this woman who owned a rare used book shop. Maybe someone could help me on that one.

Edit: I forgot Lupin. I hear that is a detective show that people watch.
 
I have a pretty big anime library and CR and funimation and all that ;)

don't even know what anime is on netflix :X
 
Eden of the East is on Netflix, it's a charming story that doesn't have weird fanservice shit.

Oh, I thought you meant that Detective Conan and Space Brothers were on Netflix. I guess you used Crunchyroll?

Like other people have said, Monster, From the New World, and Mushishi are definitely my top recommendations. I think Madoka Magica has too much anime bullshit to recommend to your mom. Phi Brain is another mystery-of-the-week show like Detective Conan, but I only watched a few episodes and wasn't really a fan.
 
Another vote for Mushishi and Planetes.

If she doesn't like Monster, try Master Keaton. It's been ages since I watched the TV series though.

And damn, you're a much better person then I could ever hope to be.
 
Different from the ones you listed, but I recommend a yugioh/dbz marathon, then Speed Racer.

Hunter X Hunter is pretty good too. Oh and steins gate!
 
Cross game/touch/H2 whatever other Mitsuru Adachi anime. Perfect blend of sports and romance. They're not hotblooded at all but manage to keep the tension all the way up there during the sports sections. SoL sections are done superbly, if you don't cry during the first episode you're a monster.
Himitsu, might supplement the crime/mystery deal. Police force use a machine that looks into brains and allows them to see the memories of the deceased. They use the memories to solve crime.
Hanada Shounen-shi - little shit of a kid gets hit by a car, survives and as a result can see ghosts. The series is episodic and pretty much deals with him helping people pass on.

It's cute, but pretty clever and legitimately funny. It's very charming.
 
Conan is basically THE detective anime so yeah out of luck with anything else.

Suggestions:
Psycho-Pass. Sci-fi noir dystopian detective story
Cowboy Bebop. Because always a good suggestion.
Monster.
 
Satoshi Kon's work would be good too. I haven't seen everything, but if she enjoys mysteries, consider Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue. Tokyo Godfathers is good too, but more of a comedy.
 
Tiger & Bunny - Super Hero Reality TV Show w/ a few big mysteries to be solved
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex - Basically a sci-fi/cyberpunk detective show, but it might get a little too jargon-y for your mom. Fantastic show though
Moribito - Story about a female bodyguard tasked with protecting a prince set in a mythical Asian country.
 
Monster. Definitely that.
Despite it's antics, Death Note is generally awesome.
Death Parade may be a surprise hit.
Psycho-Pass, especially S2, is very much a detective story. It's actually very sci-fi, though. Dystopian speculative fiction.

Mushishi is good for literally EVERYONE, except adrenaline junkies, i guess.

I love GTO, among my top 10 anime, but if she's uncomfortable with perverted/ecchi it might not be a good idea as a decent amount of humor deals with his lust and fascination for the ladies.

Yep. Panda-kun ftw. If you need an anime to watch that is super relaxing, funny, and extremely charming this is a safe bet.

This is a very good choice as well. Not sure if still in Netflix though.
 
Paranoia Agent could be worth checking out. It's pretty heavy on social commentary but you don't need to be thinking all the time to enjoy it either.
