Since Unreal Engine 4’s launch, we’ve been amazed at the groundswell of cool projects in development by the Unreal community. One thing we’ve heard many times: While development can be fueled by creativity and determination alone, finishing and releasing a commercial project often requires money.

We know this firsthand, as Epic’s early projects were built on shoestring budgets funded by such sources as Tim Sweeney’s lawn-mowing earnings, and Mark Rein’s credit card (before they took it away from him!). A small budget can make all the difference in shipping a project with the content, marketing materials, and promotional expenses necessary for it to gain traction.

So, Epic Games has created a $5,000,000 fund to provide grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 to select projects being built with and around Unreal Engine 4. Any project that has reached the “working prototype” stage of development is eligible for nomination, and all nominations will be considered based on merit.

The best part? There are absolutely no strings attached. Your project remains yours; you own your IP and publishing rights and you can spend any grant funds however you like. Epic’s goal is simply to help UE4 developers succeed because when you succeed, we succeed.

Unreal Dev Grants are open to games of all kinds on all platforms from developers anywhere in the world, and to cool non-game projects as well.

If you have or know of a UE4 project which is up and running, nominate it for an Unreal Dev Grant by visiting Unreal Dev Grants information page, or stop by Epic’s booth #1024 South at GDC. Grants will be considered based on a review of a working prototype of the project, and will be awarded over time as the cool stuff rolls in!

I'm in!
What's next?

Email unrealdevgrants@epicgames.com and tell us about your project. Send us videos, links, and any other info you think will help us see why you and your project are awesome. Remember, things in the design or idea phase are still too early, and working prototypes are best.

If you're attending GDC, visit Epic's Booth #1024 South to say hello and show us your project in person.

edit:

Here's today's UE twitch archive featuring Tim Sweeney

That's super awesome and we'll be sure to apply for it. Epic has really stepped up with how they interact with indie developers and have been really great at supporting even small developers.

Whoa. That is a great idea! I wish more companies would do that.

*cough* Valve *cough* start swinging some of that weight around.

Yeah, was thinking about that, but didn't want to bring that up here to not potentially stir up anything, but they defo could or should do something similar.

It would be kinda cool to see Unity doing the same, helping out developers with funding and/or a free Unity Pro license for those who can't afford it.

This is actually really fucking cool. I hope they really save such grants for those showing ingenuity and inspired concepts

Would be pretty cool to see, but of course, they need to actually launch a new engine :P

Not a good idea. It would take them so long to actually pay the grants, that any developers would go bankrupt waiting on them.

Oh yeah, there is that too!

Your move Unity...

Unity still hasn't responded to UE4 destroying them on the price point of the engine and access to source code...

Props to Epic for doing it.

But don't they have a few already announced games that we haven't heard jack-shit on in like, forever?

Fortnite had a close alpha recently, next phase will launch soon. With UT they have like weekly updates, it's progressing slowly, but steadily from what I can tell and that's it. No other announced games save for that other project Sweeney hinted at last year.

Very cool project indeed. Don't forget Chair and Epic Poland. Chair has their own project that is moving along with nicely.

This is a great move. It definitely generates good will with developers, and it makes sense since they get a cut of the pie if the game does well.

Unity doesn't require royalties for indies and for the time being, way better mobile compatibility. While I think UE4 is amazing and Epic deserves that very reasonable 5%, it scares quite a few people I know.

Hasn't Unity had some contests and whatnot where they give promising devs new computers and Unity Pro licenses?
