not if it was a timed exclusive, money talks man, and MS has the funds to do so.

GTAV is up to what? 30 million sold to consumers at this point? How much money would it cost Microsoft to buy even timed exclusivity when they're currently being outsold (and I'm being generous here with shipped vs. sold numbers) 5:7? It simply doesn't make sense from Rockstar's perspective. We're talking about billions of dollars here.

My opinion? USED.
Titanfall really pushing home with massive sales and on a system with many less potential buyers. Take that doubters.... Pretty bloody incredible really and to think the replies of it didn't sell systems just keep getting churned out.

PS4 sales ... still a winner.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Yes. Us Xbox fans. That's what I meant.

What about my point?

The X1 lost in sales for the Month. Good job Sony. PS4 stronger and less expensive helps as well, as everybody knows but for some reason thought the "it's COD with mechs game" and the "doesn't look like a next gen game" Now all of a sudden that was supposed to make this huge hit in console sales.

All of a sudden? People were thinking this since E3 last year and especially once MS got the console exclusive.

This is going to be like the Xbox1 gen. Will get some great games but just can't catch traction due missteps in hardware and price.

Nah, not quite like that. PS2's overall numbers are going to be pretty much impossible for anyone to repeat, just like the Nintendo DS.

I think Titanfall was held back by being on unattractive hardware. People don't want to buy an Xbox One for anything, it's a poor system.

If it was on PS4, it would have been fucking monumental.

This !

I am sure EA is looking at those 7 Million people it couldn't sell to in pure horror....

As a whole this is my perspective too.

While the Xbox One is lower, it's not actually doing bad at all, so what we're really seeing is a strong appetite for the next-gen platforms that a lot of the major publishers were relying on to continue making grandiose AAAA productions.

If we only had the PS4 at 7 million and the Xbox One at 1 million or whatever, that would be decided less good.

Imo North America isn't the problem. Whatever this thread might indicate the XBO is doing alright in NA. The problem is that besides the UK, nobody in this world gives two shits about the thing. Its there where Sony is doing most of the damage. I don't think most of this board is aware how truly aweful the XBO is selling outside their two main markets. It's WiiU level bad!

Yes if it's timed, timed exclusives hurts the sales of the delayed title compared to a simultaneous release. You' think after all the BF4, COD, and GTA5 ,moneyhat predictions before the last reveal people will see that partnerships like that never happen.

The PS4 outselling the Xbox One does reinforce what the audience wants, so that sends a certain message across as well, but in the end we need a big userbase to support AAAA next-gen only titles.
Yep, great post

Actually it was. Many times over. The press drooled about it. You had places like Giantbomb cover it with more than five hours of coverage amongst three different videos. Let's not be disingenuous here.

It's all good until you drag Giant Bomb down into the gutter with you. They take pains to discuss relationships with developers and are open about biases.

Don't insinuate that the GB crew have tickets on the same hype train as other outlets. There are better examples which would prove your point.

probably the best post in the thread. system really isnt doing bad at the 5 month rate. just not doing PS4 numbers.

Got dragged out by the girlfriend instead of seeing the reading the meltdowns. I'm assuning MS doomed is going on. The bone is selling great though. It's just insane to think it will outsell the PS4. Hope the gifs are delivering...

Wait, XBO sold 1.4 million games in the entire month, and inFamous SS sold 2 million copies? SO, inFamous handily beat Titanfall for XBO in sales, right?

They must have sold a LOT of copies of Titanfall on PC.

Not all of it. The game charted #1 in NPD, I doubt manufactured hype could have made that happen.

But yeah, some portion of its hype was definitely not real.

Its hype as THE system selling game was manufactured. The game obviously sold really well...on PC. With 1.4 million pieces of software sold on XBO this month, that's not going to be good numbers for Titanfall alone.

Microsoft screwed up by not having a more powerful system. Its just that simple. I'm still baffled that their silicon designers couldn't see that 32MB of esram wasn't enough to run most next gen games at 1080p. Sad situation. Was Xbox only the last generations but like many I came home.

There's no mystery here: Titanfall sold well, but it simply wasn't enough of an attractive game to the average consumer to overcome the negatives the Xbone is saddled with, particularly a (still) higher price tag, no Kinect-less sku, and a weaker system than the less-expensive PS4.

I apologize if I got his feed spammed. We're better than that GAF.

Arthur Gies does not deserve any such pity. He has continually insulted gamers and our intelligence; fled on a bet with a GAFer and never paid up; and Evilore himself called him something like 'the most disreputable journalist in the game industry' after a particularly scandalous event in with Arthur Gies acted like an abominable clown about a certain incident. He continually misled consumers about secret sauce in XBO, the power of the system, secrets around it, endlessly. And on launch night for PS4, Polygon with Gies literally spent hours fucking railing against the PS4, saying Titanfall is better to every game, talking about how lame everything was. He defended EA on the Sim City scandal. If they are trying to provide a service to consumers, and are even remotely desiring objectivity, they'd behave better. They do not. When a XBO game has some minor advantage over a PS4 multiplatform game, even though everything else in that PS4 multiplatform game is superior, they deduct points. When a PS4 multiplatform game is better, even when it's endlessly, massively superior, they rate them equally.

You want people to feel bad for responding negatively to his tweets? He has a responsibility to not behave this way in a visible position on his site that is supposed to serve gamers. If he can't take the heat, stay out the kitchen.

If he would have apologized for some of this behavior and tired to change there'd be no such attitude toward him. He has not.

I can't tell you what Microsoft is thinking internally, but as much as I find these results unsurprising, I also find them unalarming.

Microsoft's problem is price, and it's going to take more significant moves on that price front if they want to get back to consistent sales parity with the PS4. I think they'll be fine with games, though naturally it wouldn't hurt to have several good titles come along and build some momentum, but on the games that matter, they'll be fine. They'll have all the multiplatforms that the audience craves, they'll have a handful of exclusives that can draw additional people in. They might suffer a bit on variety, but they'll trade that off with some superior titles in other genres.

That said, it's not as if the Xbox One is performing poorly, at least not in the US. It's doing quite well. The problem is more of perception locally, as obviously PS4 is doing tremendously well. And as long as Sony keeps the price advantage in these first couple of years, it will keep outperforming Microsoft, and then even if later on Microsoft achieves parity, the die will already be cast, inertia will win out, and Sony will continue to outsell the Xbox One.

If Microsoft wants to come to parity in sales, they need to first achieve price parity, do it quickly, and that likely means removing Kinect from the box. If they're not willing to do that, these results will continue, and maybe they're fine with that.

But that's not the only problem. If they reduced the system to $399.99 tomorrow, it'd still be a system in which every multiplatform game is inferior, in which apps are all locked behind a paywall, in which is poorly competing with PS+ amazing month on month offerings, in which is burdened with a peripheral virtually nobody wants anymore, does nothing for games, and still has yet to have even a single genuinely well received dedicated title yet for the XBO. On top of that, policy-wise, they continue to stand by a damaging ID@Xbox policy that is hugely damaging to small indies.

One issue may be minor, two may be minor. But this shit adds up to a bundle of issues, and the system does not exist in a vacuum. It has to at least MATCH what PS4 is doing in the eyes of the consumer at an equal price, or offer at least something else they value equal in exchange for the losses. Consumers clearly do not see Kinect as viable in that exchange, so what can they do?

This is no easy task to turn this around. What they need is a true series of spark games that ignite people's interests, and then start releasing them in addition to a price cut. Because the only thing going to get people to accept all the downsides versus the PS4 is if the games demand their attention. I think XBO has a better lineup of currently announced titles, but not better enough to overcome how many issues it has versus PS4.

No. 1.4 million XBO games would be the NPD North American retail sales data.

I'm pretty sure the last report on Second Son was that it passed one million sales. Worldwide.

I don't follow much of the other gaming press the way I do Giantbomb. I wasn't implying inappropriate behavior, I was simply giving an example.

Brazil is also Xbone country. And Brazil is a huge video game market nowadays.
We'll see if that market also will elevate consoles.

I don't know man. Everything to this point reeks to them not being ready to go, and points back to that Feb Sony surprise reveal. Just about it all.

I'm not saying they didn't want to launch in 2013, but I think they were behind in their milestones, but didn't care because they figured Sony was going second again. Then it because a rush and you got mistake, after mistake, after mistake.

Yes. This.

From things I've heard, MS still planned on releasing at the time they did, but did bank on Sony in 2014, so they were ready to rest on their laurels putting out a half-finished device.

It was joking.

Have they even formally announced a release date for Halo 2 HD, or even that it exists?

Ahh ok, by bad. They haven't announced it, but Phil Spencer talked about how they would do a "hypothetical version." I assume it will be announced at E3 and released in Fall.

Did Infamous sell 2M in the US or WW? Source please.

What about my point?

Not sure. Don't remember much of the post from last E3 about TitanFall and how much it would sell and if it would save the X1. I do remember post about the X1 falling flat on it's face and not selling because of all the crap it said, and price point and less power and all... yet it's sold 60% more than the 360 in the same time.

Seems like they're doing just fine.

It's over, period. Microsoft lost their last ace, and that's the end of their Xbox One hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for Xbox One. Microsoft has nothing left, nothing they can reveal tomorrow would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a Xbox One. Except if they want to play Titanfall. Which will also come to PS4 at some point.

Sony took the last reason away that anyone would NEED to own a Xbox One over a PS4 (except TV SPORTS KINECT LOL GAMING), and the cavalcade of tiny titles that will be nice but won't stir up any sales is not going to salvage the bloated, overdesigned behemoth that was Xbox One.

There may be some hardcore gamer's that stick around. Some did it for Gamecube. But the last bell tolled. Maybe next decade.

The age of Microsoft is done.

Oh my god. How is GAF able to cope under the weight of all this hyperbole?

Exactly this. It's not Titanfall's fault.

I don't think any game could have made up for those negatives. I think Titanfall was about as good of a shot as they could have given it.

Japan will save the Xbox One.

On a serious note though, I think the PS4 being the dominant console is good news for Japanese devs, especially the niche ones. They now have the best of both (halves of the) worlds. They can release a game on PS4 and have a larger userbase in the west to sell to, while also having the largest userbase in their home country as well. Unlike last gen where if they released on PS3, they had less western userbase, but if they released on 360, they would get 0 sales in Japan.
