Yeah, seasonal could work well if it cuts down a bit of work for Tuney.

I think seasonal could work quite well.

Dec-Feb - "Winter"
Mar-May - "Spring"
Jun-Aug - "Summer"
Sep-Nov - "Autumn"

Will just reserve one or two extra OP posts for game space to cover the longer time frame.
That said could retool/rename this thread to be Spring.

OP-wise additions, I reckon Talisman (https://itunes.apple.com/app/id681942253) and Leo's Fortune (https://itunes.apple.com/app/id830544402) should be there? Maybe Tales of Honor (https://itunes.apple.com/app/id852502371)?

Tales of Honor, definitely. And I fixed the link for you.

With May's thread being a bit delayed, before I put it up, how do people feel about having larger threads spanning multiple months?

I think it would perfect and a little more manageable.
As a plus, newcomers would just have a look to the OP and have a clear idea of recent top hits, spanning a reasonable amount of time.

On a side note, I'm a VERY HAPPY NERD today.
Recently I'm replaying Elder Sign: Omens (which I ADORE) and like 5 minutes ago, JUST FIVE MINUTES AGO, while fighting Cthulu in the abyss, I discovered there is a third 3-boards additional campaign as iap, apparently published MONTHS AGO...somehow I missed it.
Set I ancient Egypt, no less.

Happiness.

Speaking of PvZ-type games, I cannot believe how well Metal Slug Defense works, and I urge you all to try it.
I'm with ya. Cracking little game. I've hit a difficulty spike at 8-1, but it might just be my shoddy tactics at fault.

I wish I could figure out the criteria for unlocking POWs.

It has to be luck I'm guessing. Especially as there is an item you can buy that says "100% chance of freeing 1 POW on winning". There certainly doesn't seem to be any criteria I can work out above and beyond that.

It's a fun game though. Just got to stage 6. Hate running out of goes though :(

Might have to bite on that. All of a sudden I'm gaming on my iPad more than everything else combined. Always happens in waves. Right now it's Hearthstone, Wolf Among Us, Kotor, that Metal Slug tower defense game and Dumb Ways to Die.

This sounds good

edit: nevermind :/

I always thought the monthly iOS threads were made so that they don't get relegated to the gaming community section.

Steam thread, PSN thread, Nintendo downloads thread, thread for whatever the new Xbone download service is called. Basically, the threads for game download services where there are frequent new releases to be discussed. As always, we encourage individual game |OT|s where a game is popular or interesting enough to warrant one, but we are fine with these monthly threads to cover the smaller ones that otherwise wouldn't get discussed. We prefer monthly refreshes for these, to keep things from stagnating and turning into megathreads.
At only 19 pages here, iOS is hardly in danger of entering megathread territory IMO. PSN probably already has more posts in its May thread than this thread accumulated in all of April. I don't really see the purpose in blindly treating two very different services with very different userbases identically just because reasons.

And of course Steam had multiple mega threads per month sometimes, only recently switching to monthly threads. So it's not like all service threads were treated equally

Is the compromise to make a monthly thread but keep the information in the OP as seasonal?

I'm guessing the issue is the work required in generating it?

I would prefer the monthly version. After discovering this thread, I started to look at each month individually and got many good game tips. I do not think that seasonal threads are able to reach this amount of diversity.

The difference is we have games lololololololol

But android has the PS3/360/PC game Record of the Agarest War out now, which if you believe comments on other forums, is the best strategy rpg since FFT. Though on mobile that may actually be true, lol.

edit2: it's coming to iOS anyway, good news for fans of sexualised trussed up anime gals! http://toucharcade.com/2014/05/02/record-of-agarest-war-announced/

The only good part of this game is Steam Trading Cards and Steam Profile Wallpapers which can be sold more than the price of the game itself. And the mobile version doesn't have those for sure.

The 100+ hours gameplay is nothing but the endless repeat of the first five minutes, and you can't speed up or skip these boring grinding battles.

Just finished Monument Valley, such a brilliant game with an amazing art style.

The level when you start above the sea was particularly eye catching.

If you haven't played it then I highly recommend giving it a go!

So I missed the tutorial part in MetalSlugDef that explains how to free prisoners and I can't find it any where!!! Ridiculous!
Help gaf what do
pls respond
Unfortunately, you didn't miss anything. The prisoners are freed randomly after completing a stage.

Having a good time with MSD though. The recharge system is generous and, so far, I haven't felt the need for IAPs, though I did spend a few bucks getting a new unit just to support the debs. I do wish the matchmaking worked better. Half the time I either get steam rolled, or the other player bails to keep from getting a loss. Apparently there's no penalty for leaving early.

Couple of sales that I just noticed:
Baldur's Gate II 9.99 (from 14.99)
Shadowrun Returns 4.99 (from 9.99)

Double-dipper level sales?

I think if Tunesmith wants to make seasonal threads because it's a time commitment issue, he should make seasonal threads. He's practically carrying this community on his back and doing a damn fine job at it.

It's not like we're moving at a clip that requires a monthly thread. I'm pretty sure we moved away from mega threads because the community wanted to include game recommendations in the OP for the people casually checking in, or asking because they just got an iDevice. That would be fine to do on a seasonal basis.

That's unless someone is willing to step up and take on a monthly commitment with his template and level of thoroughness.

I would love to help make these threads for Tunesmith if I actually had any decent graphic design experience.

Honestly, the iOS threads wouldn't be the same without Tunesmith's elegant touches to every one of his OPs.

Warhammer Quest

I got this day one, and have been quite disappointed with it so far, ranked it as my worst iOS purchase, bang for buck... found it to be a buggy mess... too many crashes and hanging for my liking; fairly disappointing considering I quote liked Hunters (though that had its issues as well, mainly around the AI though)

So... I finally gave it another go over the weekend, third times a charm, and actually got into it a bit more... Done all the Stirland quests... but um, is that it?

Found it got quite repetitive quite quickly, limited tile sets / enemies, and frustrating getting 90% of items etc for DLC characters :/

@PittaGAF: Thoughts? How did you get 100+ hours out this?

Too busy playing KOTOR to read that thread

Ports don't count as iOS games, and you can't play a game like that without buttons anyway (if you want to have fun playing it), so try again, you only think you're enjoying yourself. Keep in mind I'll only take iOS exclusive AAA $20 million or higher games that last 10+ hours as acceptable items. :p

Ugh, some of those responses in that Why do gamers hate mobile games? thread...

It seems like a pretty common thought is "I only really like / hated what they did with (known console IP / port)." It makes me think that they have not explored the platform very thoroughly to cast a fair judgement, as they're only playing what's familiar to them.

If you wanted to give these people a better look at iOS, what games would you tell them to play? Would be an interesting read if some mobile naysayers played some picks and gave their thoughts on them.

I posted in that thread to give my two penneth but sometimes I find it hard to defend iOS since what I really LOVE about it is all the great ports it gets, so the counterargument that the stuff is available elsewhere is very easy to make. My favourite iOS stuff in the past few years is almost all ports - Baldur's Gate, X-Com, FTL, the Final Fantasies and (soon!) the Dragon Quests (4-6 for life!!), Walking Dead, Hearthstone etc etc

tbh I find listing stuff off the top of my head tricky due to the sheer volume of games I play (alot) on iOS. It's fantastic.

I dunno, a lot of those folks seem limited, they only play a few genres, can't comprehend new ways of input... most people only like what they like, no point in arguing with them really

//feeling defeated after a few days of pointless GAF arguments that can never be won

Well, in my post/rant on one of the other pages in the thread, I mentioned:
Monument Valley, Incoboto, Blek, Device 6, Year Walk, Penumbear, Hero of Many, Hoplite, Wayward Souls, Hitman Go, Instantion

But really I doubt the naysayers will be convinced. Those kinds of preconceived assumptions are hard to overlook and I can just see them complaining about controls or being too simple, etc.

Hey guys, a friend of mine that doesn't have a gaf account just launched a very cool game. I will just put hiw words here. Take a look at the trailer, and give it a shot, it's worth it ( only for ipad so far )

"Hi all.

I just released my first game "double drop" for the iPad.

It would be amazing if you guys gave it a try!

Game Description
Double drop is a game initially inspired by nights out in Tokyo Arcades and Pachinko.
It starts as a very approachable game, with simple mechanics, and it evolves into a fast paced, reaction based arcade game, which really tests players skills and endurance.
The game creates a hypnotising experience with generative music, build with over 200 single note music samples, and features both, a fast, raw, same-device multiplayer experience, and a solo mode, designed to allow co-operation, with about 80 challenges.

Statement?

My intention was to create a game which, if played by someone highly skilled, an observer who has never seen the game before would maybe not understand what was going on in the screen, but would feel highly compelled by how the vivacity in movement, colours and sounds unfolded a tiny spectacle difficult to stop looking at.
( And ... fun to play, of course )

/!\ iOS Gaming May 2014: Now We Resume Our Regularly Scheduled Screen Swiping /!\

I cherry-picked some game stuff / monthly vs seasonal posts from the end of this thread and put it in the May one with my reply. :)

Watched the teaser and that both looks and sounds interesting :). Could you perhaps re-post this in the May thread for more coverage? Cheers! (sorry about the thread timing!)

:)
