Kotaku: Bethesda is misleading gamers about Prey 2, Arkane is in fact making game

Prey 2 (System Shock 3) concept docs have surface online. It's targeting a 2016 Q3 release.

"High level notes from Raph
•Spiritual successor to System Shock 2
•Characters / Plot can be all new
•Variety in the level layouts is important
•Avoidhallway-room-hallway play.
•Verticality
•Multiple paths through the environment
•Areas should serve a function"

I really hope we finally see thjs game at some point.

Will they still call it Prey 2? It's not like anyone really remembers Prey.

It's a torrent link. My guess is that would be frowned upon. It's easy to find. I found it through Twitter.

I may be wrong but that should be fine for a document. It's not a game or some other purchasable media. If not, you should be able to rehost it somewhere.

Why the hell even slap the name Prey 2 on it. It's not like Prey was popular or anything. This should be named like a new IP since it is one...

I thought the movie industry did real well when the director is mentioned before the trailer is shown.

Dishonored was a charm of game. The world, characters, and pace were very well put together. I don't think this is something to really cause problems. Prey was delayed for what 10 years? And still it was a mediocre shooter that was relatively short. Actually, it was a pretty decent game. I don't know if it's the Turok of this generation though.

Didn't Kevin Pereira have a receipt from his preorder back in 1995 on Attack of the Show?

What will Bethesda do to Arkane once they've finished the new version of Prey 2?

I'm not going to distribute it. Just wanted to give folks a heads up that it's out there.

It's super early since it details 4 different approaches for the sequel:

An Origin story, RetroFuture, a Ricardo Bare and Ralph story treatment, and a direction called "The Island".

Here's an example of the RetroFuture direction:

The scene opens on a man running through the streets of an abandoned city. The city itself is a 50’s retro / but with a layer of sci fi worked over the top. He looks around desperately, then pulls out a retro high tech device... Behind him, men dressed in black with blurred faces begin fading in like phantoms and begin to chase him. He dives into a shop reminiscent of Hopper’s “Nighthawks at the Diner”. Using his device he’s able to hack into building itself -causing a section to open up –revealing Alien ship architecture underneath. He hacks an alien sentry robot to fend off the phantoms and makes his escape. The city area is a blend of Art Nouveau / 50’s era NYC / with a subtle Sci-Fi overlay. The player makes his way back and forth through the Alien ship and the urban façade habitat.

I have no way of knowing if it's genuine or not. I thought Arkane's initial pitch was for a RetroFuture vampire game, and that they only accepted Prey 2 because it was set in the future? If it's legit, I guess someone inside of Arkane isn't too happy about the project. I can't imagine taking over a property another team supported for nearly a decade.

I hate people like Kotaku who help stick metal rods in the wheels of these projects.

As if it wasn't stressful enough that these guys are working 3-4-5 years on a game that they truely believe in and hope it might resonate with enough people and validate the time and effort they put in and then these terrible individuals decide they need people to come see the news they just created because they can't write decent, thoughtful, well-researched, interesting and diverse articles and in-depth features that might lead to a more coherent audience rather than wasting it on spreading unresponsible leaks and false controversies.

The studio developing Prey 2 had nothing to do with System Shock 2.

Bioshock, which was developed by 2K Boston, also formerly known as Irrational Games (Which is now dead) developed System Shock 2 and created Bioshock as a spiritual successor.

I'm calling bullshit

In no way does this sound better than the bounty hunting game HumanHead was making.

I wish HumanHead could take all that work and make it an original IP. Going off reports, that game was really close to being content complete before Bethesda pulled that shady shit they did.

I feel the exact same way. There's no way I would ever consider supporting this project considering how Bethesda treated Human Head. Despicable stuff.

No, nothing at all like every jackhole Gaf-er who kneejerk reacts to ever posting or personnel change from a studio.

Please do yourself a favor and get over yourself.

Speaking of which, why did Bethesda pull that shit? If the game was nearly complete, why did they completely nuke the project?

I know, right? It's like those killjoys at The Guardian ruining all the NSAs work. Real shame.

Zenimax attempted to purchase the studio in an aggressive fashion. Human Head Studios is one of the only independent developers with the chops to improve id-tech.

After the hostile buyout attempt failed they couldn't continue with the project as Human Head owned parts of the tech and, according to ex-HH devs, they also have the source code. Obsidian tried to reserve engineer it, but I imagine it was too much work.

Agreed. Even thoughin it happens elsewhere in this industry to varying degrees, this was blatant enough to gain exposure. It's rare we get such a peek into such shady business, so I'll definitely be sure to not support Bethesda from now on, and I'll be sure to mention what they've done here whenever this is brought up. It may be legal, but everyone is free to pass judgment on their practices.

My understanding of the events went as following. I could be wrong in some respects, though.

They wanted to try and force HumanHead to sell to them. Zenimax was looking to make investors happy by having good teams to develop good games. You can imagine that as an investor, you wouldn't be too happy about: WET, Rogue Warrior, and Hunted: The Demon Forge and wanted Zenimax to produce better products.

Zenimax didn't really have the time to start their own nor want to spend too much money, so they started pulling a bunch of shady bullshit on HumanHead to strong arm them into being acquired for next to nothing.

HumanHead obviously didn't budge so Zenimax was like "Fuck ya'll then" and decided to reboot Prey 2. You may be thinking, that must've cost Zenimax a lot of money but IIRC HumanHead spent a lot of time doing work without getting paid for it thinking everything would eventually be sorted.

You're right, especially since there's not even a developer or story connection now. Whoever decided to pursue the property in the first place would look incompetent if they never use it, especially since they are five years into developing a sequel. That's why they would have to frame it as the pursuit of quality.

It's certainly Prey 2 in name only now.

Kotaku is an independent source. They are not part of Bethesda, obliged to Bethesda or under a contract with Bethesda. And Jason Schreier did a fine job - in fact how he handled it reminded me of how Kotaku used to be in the old days - and that is a perfect example of game journalism in its finest. His job is to report with clarity and transparency and he did that.

Mad respect to Jason.

only reason i'm interested in this is because of that video walkthrough we got before the game got "cancelled". Now I'm afraid all of that has been scrapped.

The IGN link you posted is the most important one to show how scummy Bethesda is. And according to a thread we had last year, it wasn't the first time they'd done this too. Arkane was apparently a victim of some similar moves, though in that case Bethesda actually succeeded in acquiring them.

i don't have a problem with kotaku or anyone else reporting on leaks/rumors, and i think bethesda's response was inappropriate, but come on. the press isn't 'obliged to' publishers, but the same is true the other way around. publishers have business/marketing plans for their games, and (validity of said plans aside,) sticking to them is their prerogative. if it's ok for the press to undermine those plans for their own gain (or face-saving), i'm not sure i understand why it isn't ok for publishers to do the same to the press.
