If we ever cancel The Last Guardian we'll tell you, Sony's Yoshida promises

By Brian Crecente on Jun 11, 2014 at 6:21p @crecenteb

It's been seven years since work started on The Last Guardian, five years since it was announced, and who knows how many rumor posts saying that the game — begun as, and possibly still, a PlayStation 3 title — has been canceled.

Most recently, that common rumor surfaced right before this year's E3.

It's not just the long wait that drives these rumors, the game has run into some significant issues, including the departure of producer Fumito Ueda as a full-time employee at Sony. He does remain on the project as a consultant, but the story of the game's creation remains deeply hidden.

So when I wrapped up my interview with Sony worldwide studios head Shuhei Yoshida with one more question, Yoshida knew what was coming.

"It exists. The team is working hard on it," he intoned almost rhythmically. "I was heartbroken when some article came out on some major site saying it was canceled."

Yoshida reiterated that he has played the game, but declined to say anything about the experience. That long-running silence, I told him, might be why people start to think the game is dead. People start to worry.

"I will say this," Yoshida said. "When we cancel a title and it is something we have announced already, we'll say so.

"It's a highly anticipated title, we have to do so."

When Boyes said "Rome wasn't built in a day" on Giantbomb's video, I nearly put my fist through my monitor.

But he was literally correct, the city of Rome was not complete in 1 day. TLG lives.

Of course. And they know its not any title they can ever "quietly" cancel, so if it happens it'll be a big deal. Shu is getting pelted about TLG all E3 from every press interview, they know the visibility of the game

They should release like a screenshot or a teaser or something

You know, they REALLY should. It would do so much to reassure people. I can only imagine turmoil and disaster at this point for a game that has taken THIS long to work on and has lost some important leadership.

"Right now we have Steve the intern staring at a screen with some code on it. No one else, not technically canceled. It'll stay this way because we love teasing your nethers too much to truly cancel it."

I don't see the reason to not believe them anymore.

They said it was in full-dev and that it was close to being shown at E3 but couldn't due to technical issues. It'll be at a convention soon, don't worry about it.

Duh? Lol.

And where is this "it was going to be at E3 but was retracted" thing coming from? Nothing anyone has said in the last week has pointed to that.

I would hope so.

I don't care for this title at all, but I can see why people are hyped for this. Sony owes it to their fans to at least be open with them.

at this point they are waiting for the day when people stop asking for it and then BOOM SURPRISE here is a kickass trailer and the game is out next month :)

So... like...

How has that studio not faced any repercussions yet for failing to release a game within 6 (soon to be 7!) years after reveal. Like... what's going on with the team.

So it hasn't been cancelled, but he is now willing to say anything about it. Why the continued non-information? How long has it been since it was first revealed?
