A Dark Room is free right now. You should check it out.
Yes, this. Give the game a shot. It's not for everyone but if you like it, it's absolutely fantastic

Here are my shortened impressions, removed some details because it's the kind of game where the less you know, the better it is

I went into A Dark Room expecting another text adventure, but this game is so much more.

The simple interface hides an amazing amount of depth and the text is fluid, poetic, and provides an ominous atmospheric tone in few words. There's even some meta Device 6-esque elements, like your screen dimming as the fire wanes and then brightening back up when you stroke the flames.

Don't overlook A Dark Room. Despite its outward appearance, the experience is deeper and more intriguing than one might expect.

I've never played Pokemon but I have Hunter Island and it's pretty fun. Is Micromon in the same realm as that? Is there character upgrades or anything?

You don't upgrade your character. You only use for mons to battle. Which "upgrade" by gaining levels, evolving, and learning new skills.

80 Days is so good that I decided to get Sorcery 1 and 2 as well. I've only heard good things about them so I'm pretty excited to finally check those games out

August thread should be up later today.

Game-wise, does Micromon, Crazy Taxi and 80 Days fit the August OP bill? :)

Impressions? Impressions!

Haven't really read much negative comments about Micromon (except maybe a little when viewing it as a 1:1 pokemon game, which it's not), 80 Days or Crazy Taxi.

Deep Loot is another to keep an eye on, from what very little I've tried it's basically a turn-based (!) version of Jetpack Joyride but vertical instead of horizontal, and with mining and collecting elements in the game. It also has a couple of (two) positive impressions. Seems like it could be a great game if you liked JJ but found it too hectic and want something paced a bit friendlier.

Actually found it after some browsing. It was Space Age. Really isn't giving as Star Trek a vibe as I originally thought though. Still looking forward to it.

Big Bucket! They (he?) made The Incident, which I loved, so I'm immediately interested. Thanks for bringing it to my attention :)

I'll have 80 Days impressions later

Deep Loot also fits the OP bill IMO

Also, not sure if you want to add it, but radiangames re-released Super Crossfire as Super Crossfighter, now published by them rather than Chillingo

Duet's Epilogue update suits the Update section

Deep Loot should absolutely be in the OP. It's fantastic. It is indeed comparable to Jet pack Joyride, but it's not an endless runner, and it's much more relaxing. The controls are perfectly designed to complement the mobile nature of the game, and the unlocks and rewards will keep you coming back for more. I've sunk hours into it since launching on Thursday, and will spend many more until I've unlocked all dem boats! It's also a love letter to all sorts of pop culture icons. Lovely, nerdy, compulsive, excellent.

Wow, that's kinda crazy you've never played a pokemon game before

As far as how it compares to hunter island or any other "pokemon clone" it's way way more polished, and IMO better

Still not as good as pokemon, but the best you're gonna get on ios, definitely worth a dollar

I absolutely adored Sorcery 1. Have not had a chance to play Sorcery 2 yet though.

I am so blown away with 80 days right now but when I have some down time I am going to jump into Sorcery 2.

Inkle Studios is one of my fav game companies working right now.

Super Crossfighter (formerly Super Crossfire) from Radiangames is free for a few days for its relaunch. Great high score shooter with opportunities to upgrade your ship as you progress through rounds. Worth a DL.

Micromon is going to be huge. It's no.1 already on the UK store. It's been far too long before someone finally came up with a competent Pokemon clone. Had a play of it yesterday and it was pretty good. It certainly going to have everyone playing it to get their Pokemon fix.

Yeah, it's number 1 in the US too, I wonder how much revenue that is considering how all the top grossing apps are F2P

For $1 I feel like I'm robbing the devs. I'll throw a couple of dollars at them because I got my money's worth and then some already. Really nice game, definitely OP worthy. If you don't expect Pokemon level of quality you will find a charming RPG with a superb presentation, fun story and addictive gameplay.

Is it no 1 in downloads or Grossing? Paid or Overall? Minecraft numbers will give us some indication.

Top grossing is really the one that matters, and there I'm seeing rank 71... not bad, but not #1 by a bit of a stretch.

Also, I think it's due to go up to $2.99 for the regular price (from $0.99), though I could be mistaken. It's a common tactic for getting on sale lists, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did for a short while to then drop the price back to $0.99, and possible even totally free down the road as a last ditch effort to get some people paying IAP for the multiplayer.

It's number one on paid downloads, sorry should have made that clear, is grossing per day? Per week? I wonder how that works, but yeah I'm sure it's not gonna be making kim kardashian money as long as it even costs a dollar

Really not understanding the Deep Loot praise. It's pretty shallow to me. Pun intended.

One, there's only one or two definite suit upgrades where every aspect of your suit is upgraded. I don't like the feeling of buying a new suit and having something be worse off than it was before. There's not much more incentive to upgrade things past the yellow suit, as once you unlock the first round of upgrades, it takes forever and a day to unlock anything. Way too grindy without the coin doubler. The music is nice but that's about it. And it shouldn't be compared to Jetpack Joyride really, as you have a finite number of moves to use, and can only increase that via upgrading. JJ is a truly "endless" game if you have a high skill.

I dunno, people at touch arcade are saying they're getting ~10,000 gold a pop from their best runs (not doubled), and others are saying they've basically unlocked everything in the game already without spending any real money (it launched just the other day right?). I read something that once you reach a certain depth things get quite hazardous (like mixing explosive charges with certain types of enemies), and that a lot of the consumables (which are super-cheap) are really necessary in every dive, as they can pay for themselves many times over.

Good to have a little criticism though, and the game may not be for everyone, but I do think it looks like a well made and enjoyable collectathon type game, with some similarities to JJ, to me. The interface of the shop/launch screen being very reminiscent, and the idea the further you get, the harder the obstacles in the game become.

So micromon is number 71 in grossing, with only two paid apps above it, grindr in the 40's and minecraft at 32, minecraft is 7 bucks though

Here is my review for Crazy Taxi:

This is standard iap fare. You run out of gas? Wait 5-10 minutes, watch a video or pay $$$.

You're also limited to certain access per day. Unless $$$

The missions themselves also lack variety and last 30-60 seconds and are all structured the same.

Gameplay is on rails. If you've played bottom to top endless runners, you know what to expect here. You swipe left and right to move your cab. That's it. You're job is to avoid incoming obstacles. Grab coins along the way and...that's it really. You can not traverse the city.

The good? Customization, art design, music, performance and controls are all done very well! Great character.

Even though is on rails, you can still take whatever route do you want, I was playing this mission that was unbeatable for me, until for mistake I took another direction and got in time lol, at least imo is not that linear, and i think that they could make a free mode like the original arcade, but that will not fit well with the iap system

That being said, your review is right, I think the game is fun for short spans, and is cool to rent your cars to make some money while you are not playing

Also, rhthym of fighters dlc is out, I hate the new remix of control crisis, the developer of the song said that he made this remix to fit that song in a rhythm game, but imo, the original fits way better than this one

The rest of the songs are cool, the metal slug defense pack has the ending credits as the only msd song and the other 3 are from ms3

80 Days Impressions

I brought this game after seeing a preview on Pocket Tactics thinking it was a good concept. You are a French valet for an English Gentleman in a late 19th Century Steampunk influenced Universe. You are tasked with traveling around the world in 80 days or under, this involves planning and finding routes, making sure your master stays healthy, talking to locals and importantly making sure your funds are large enough to advance further in your travels.

My first trip around the world lasted 91 days, I was making good gains in Europe and made a huge profit selling Persian clothes to the Indian markets. My character accidentally smoked opium in Hong Kong much to the displeasure of my master and things started to take a turn for the worse. After boarding a ferry to San Fransisco the captain of the ship decided to navigate to another island. I tried to engineer a mutiny and take control of the ship by exploiting religious divides in the mixed European Chinese crew, I also charmed the hard working workers below deck and spread rumors about the character of the captain. Alas the attempted mutiny failed and we were chucked off the ship and mocked by the captain. As I lay on the island waiting for a ferry to take us to San Fransisco I realized we were now not going to make it around the world in 80 days. A passing islander asked me why I was traveling and why I didn't enjoy the beauty of the island? My character contemplated this thought for a moment and questioned the very reasons for his loyalty to his master but I chose to push on and at least make sure we returned to London.

After this I was held up by Jesse James, got beaten in a boxing match and met a spy on the way to England. Before this event I delivered a baby, strolled the coast of Italy marveling at her beauty and was transported to Delhi by a walking city.

I have used this little story and the above example to illustrate the appeal of this game, it is a Universe in which you can make choices but more importantly feel part of. The map itself is beautiful, allowing you to plan your next move and see the progress of friends and other travelers. The script is very well written and the world feels familiar but also alien.

It is the perfect game to dedicate time to and sit with while drinking a cup of tea or even a glass of port to really capture the occasion. Conversely it lends itself to a quick turn while you are on your own train commute.

A brilliant game and one that would only really work on the tablet medium. If you have any interest in story driven games, the 19th century or interactive fiction I recommend this wholeheartedly.

Now I am off a rather nasty Spaniard has insulted my master and I must demand satisfaction!

More 80 Days impressions:

I write for a hobby. Short stories, parts of stories, game impressions and previews. There's something quite magical about how mere characters and letters can transport you to some new worlds, breathe life into exotic beings and otherworldly places. 80 Days is the newest interactive fiction/visual novel masterpiece from inkle and it has absolutely stunned me with its compelling worldbuilding and engaging story.

Inspired by the classic Jules Verne novel, you are the companion and valet of an English traveler extraordinaire, driven by a wager to circumnavigate the world in 80 days. Like inkle's previous games, the narrative is especially well-written, bringing the era, characters, and locations to life and offering a vast array of choices and scenarios that shape your journey. Your route is defined by more than just your dialogue and decisions, but also trading items on various world markets, your relationship with your partner and master, and other variables.

But what makes 80 Days so compelling for me is the incredible world that inkle has crafted. It's a world of conflict and turmoil, of walking cities and submersible trans-Atlantic railways, of revolutions and spies. Your goal may be to circle the globe, but each city offers new distinct wonders and there are dozens of cities spanning the world, giving the game a scope that few can match. Planning your trip, forging connections and relationships, learning new more efficient routes to new places gives 80 Days a sense of urgency and tension. The social aspect, which lets you see other players' routes as they travel in real time, adds to that urgency.

80 Days is a compelling experience that is a must play for fans of interactive fiction and visual novels

Never thought I'd actually get into iPhone games but I'm really enjoying Wayward Souls and was pleasantly surprised. Controls work, musics good, looks good, etc.

Deemo is an excellent time killer/short time thing too.
