I'm still trying to block out the first season beyond Episode 14... I mean,
WHO THE HELL WOULD NEGOTIATE AWAY THEIR COMATOSE DAUGHTER TO BE MARRIED!!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Actually those are the girls who's CADs oniisama was responsible for or helped with.
And Juumonji and Saegusa were never engaged.
I didnt even watch it past that, so no need to block it out!

Good write up. Personally there were way too many anime tropes and anime jokes for me to truly love the series. That said I think it is an above average anime and the best "trapped in an MMO" anime there is.

I continue to watch this under some strange expectation that the writer will stop spanking it to his own creation and make Tatsuya actually interesting. Boring episode overall. First half which should have been interesting wasn't because you already know what the end result is when Onii-sama is involved. And all of the girls are falling over themselves to dance with him because he's Onii-sama not because he's particularly interesting as a personality.

Shouldn't that be Venus or something.
This show is still in a weird place where I don't really know what to think of it, since I have little connection to the original yet this feels decidedly average a lot of the time.

In Japanese, "Mars" is written as 火星, or the Fire Planet. That's where everyone got their elemental powers from. Venus is "The Golden Planet", for the record.

You're right, the show features a number of anime jokes and tropes but they don't appear that frequently after the main introduction arc has run it's course. I mean, tropes are omnipresent in all stories but the real bad stuff like stock lame jokes and stock character romance is largely swept to the side, for the most part.
How much actual erotic fanservice is in this series, for example? There really isn't any at all. The same goes for stupid violence and gore, or the usual creepy bad guy stuff like sexual assault. I'm really surprised that, for the most part, none of that stuff appeared.
Sure, I won't defend Shiroe's harem shit because that's kind of bad but thankfully it only plays a very minor role in the story. It isn't actually that annoying. Is it lame? Of course, but I don't feel any of that stuff really detracts from the main show itself.
The largest complaint you can levy against the story is to complain about the characterisation and I think that's fair. I'll go into it more when I finish off the series and post a full review. Suffice to say that certain people will really get a kick out of this story based on their own preferences and tastes when it comes to storytelling. Does talk of economics and trade intrigue you? Are you excited by heated scenes of political debate? Could you be entertained by a discussion about systems and how they work rather than a tale of noble heroes slaying baddies?
The shows strength is that it explores and discusses every level of the world at the same time. For example, in a single arc we'll have a focus on one single party fighting a handful of enemies, the movement of larger armies tackling scarier foes, general troop movement concepts, political intrigue and world building all in a single storyline that weaves the micro with the macro in a surprisingly effective manner. What's more, we understand the importance of everything from timing of the cooldown on an individual spell all the way up to the quarrelling of nobles because the story is deeply concerned with, and driven by, systems and how they work. It treats them all as equally exciting and equally warranting of screentime. This won't be of interest to some, or perhaps even many, people.

Enjoyable little "beach" episode. The calligraphy lesson was also pretty fun. Naru jumping from the cliff was played with the right mix of seriousness and levity, and I continue to like Tama and her strange delusions. It's a pleasant show to wrap things up on.

Ah, I can answer this one, all of that is absent due to the fact that this show aired on the NHK Educational Channel which has much stricter standards then other stations.
The Light Novels as understand actually did imply that sexual assault and rape were happening in this world.

In one of the manga sidestories you're introduced to some characters who admit to raping NPCs and get away with it because the game has no rules against such a thing.

Kinda odd that this is really the first monster they've encountered so far, this being a show set in vast space. Not really what this show is about though, I guess. Still, after a bunch of stories of crime, gangs, experiments gone wrong, etc., it feels kinda odd. Not a bad episode, though.
Management chief's reaction when he saw it was the Dirty Pair that the 3WA sent was great.

Clearly superior to the original material! The show could have been so easily filled with that kind of content early on and it would have really brought the whole thing down. More proof, if proof were needed, that restraints can produce better works then total freedom.

I think I agree though I'd have to rewatch the first episode which impressed me greatly as well. But yeah it was great. Show is on a roll since ep 15.

Oh man I laughed so hard when Kirito was brutalizing the poor guy with his Lightsaber for what felt like minutes. Was expecting that weapon to be somewhat more elegant and kill a bit swifter...
I don't think one has anything to say about our lord and savior enabling his inner detective mode for perfect hearing. And blocking a hail of bullets lightning fast? Pff ez, come again.
One last complaint: it's getting on my nerves how pretty much every scene with background characters has those be totally static. It's just cheap. The contrast between the main characters' youthful look and everyone else's "old and gritty" appearance is also still ridiculous. Oh well, I got my comedy this season.

I'm sure we will. My only concern is when and how long they plan to spend time on it. With how the OP is set up, it looks like we should be getting far into the manga by the end of the season as it is.

If you end up enjoying the anime, I highly suggest checking out the manga. It continues on after the point where the Anime took a break. In fact, the manga is still ongoing.

Yeah I had mentioned it last week how everyone else has chosen to be the same middle-age butch looking dude and how it is apparently shocking to them that a guy would play as a girl in a MMO. Because that's totally weird and wacky and we couldn't have a scene with Sinon slapping him for see her in her underwear without it! Her virtual underwear at that!
Even funnier when you remember she said she sees herself and her avatar as two separate people about five minutes before.

Thats what I'm worried about epecially seeing the OP. Unless its gonna have a 2 cour it'll be rushed. Sometimes I wonder what's going on in the heads of Studio Pierrot.
The anime is enjoyable and isn't bad, but damn could it have been a lot better.

I feel the same. As an anime, I'm completely fine with it. The only problem I have is that at times there just really bad/annoying jump cuts. I would've been completely fine if we stopped at the end of the

Well, it's more Puchimas. You should know what to expect if you've watched the first season. I actually liked the first season more. This one got more weak episodes, and some of the same jokes gets recycled. It's still incredibly cute though.
The second and third ED is pretty good, but I didn't like the first one that much.

Dat consistency! On top of it, in typical slapstick comedy manner, she also stands there in shock for 20s before proceeding to slap him. Kirito was even nice enough to look down, just put on some virtual closes in the meantime ffs.

Okay, mouth to mouth... I count that as a kiss. Considering how rare those are and how much I miss them in anime (non-ecchi...), that was a big plus!
Unlike pretty much everything else in that episode. Gotta love how the show feeds some forgettable fodder enemies to our bad guy before Inaho takes him on with ez. Didn't even feel like the more advanced mech was any superior really. I mean he isn't even physically stronger? Seriously though, aren't you just the best Inaho?
The CGI mechs also continue to look like shit.
Worst of all has to be the emperors reaction to the assassination stuff. What the fuck would he even lose if he were to investigate Slaine's claim for a week or two? Slaine's outright telling him it's a conspiracy from the darn knights and the emperor trusts the knight completely anyways? What? Wasn't the emperor wondering why the earth government would allow this stuff to happen in the first place? I would expect him to be suspicious and careful? Guess he's rather carrying the idiot ball instead, smh.

Forgot to mention the soundtrack. I personally really love Sawano's AoT soundtrack. As far as I'm concerned it fits the action and tone really well in that show. Here however? This time around especially it sounded like senseless noise. Makes those shitty combat sequences even worse :/
