Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I think it makes sense as PS4 has the highly acclaimed Uncharted franchise exclusive to that system. Perhaps MS deemed it necessary to have some claims to a similar exclusive. I don't agree with the decision, but Crystal Dynamics seemed to be less than pleased with Tomb Raider's sales initially, so big deals like these will surely make financial sense in terms of actual profit margins and the future of the company. It's unfortunate that this deal is made when Tomb Raider DE sold better on PS4, so it's quite clear money is MS only bargaining chip in this equation. Regardless, not a great decision. But, I have both consoles so if the game is any good, I'll pick it up on my Xbox One.

However by pushing that direct comparison do you think is appropriate for TR as a product? Do you think this direct competition against a product on a more powerful system and in the hands of the most accomplished console developers today is something that you want to subject your product?

I see the reasons, but that's not something I think will be successful for either (SE/Xbox) party.

It's actually pretty amusing when you consider that Sony paid for exclusivity of the Tomb Raider series way back on the original PlayStation.

I have a hard time believing this isn't a timed exclusive, though - full exclusivity would be too damaging to the Tomb Raider brand in countries where the Xbone is having a hard time (ie, most of them). I mean, surely they want to reboot the movie series, right?

MGS4 was paid for? You're going to have to provide a source there buddy because I'm pretty sure it stayed off the X360 due to technical reasons and Kojima's own bias for PS. Besides every MGS was exclusive to PS at one point. Last I checked, TR wasn't.

This is scummy, no matter what way you try framing it. It's everything wrong with MS and it seems they've now long overstayed their welcome. If they're not going to put in the effort, I'm not going to be supporting them anytime soon

MGS4 was a big money sink for Konami at the time. I am sure that the only reason they didn't port it was because it would have cost them too much.

Which is why MGS5 is now a multiplatform game from day one. The best solution for everyone.

The lost sale from PS4 and PC is massive and MS surely paid good money to cover it. Definitely more than what they paid for Titanfall. Crazy move by both MS and Square Enix and I seriously don't think it's money well-spent. If an exclusive with heavy marketing like Titanfall failed to significantly move Xbone sale, do they think Tomb Raider exclusive will do any better?

Final Fantasy VII all over again!

Admittedly for rather different reasons...

Lol yeah same situation but I wouldn't call Tomb Raider the greatest game of its genre. That belongs to Uncharted, which zomg comes out the same time period as this game lol.

Maybe SE thought they couldn't compete and would lose sells going head to head with Uncharted

Who knows what they were thinking.

PS4 is dominating Europe and Tomb Raider is pretty big there no? How does this make any sense? The amount of money changing hands behind the scenes has to be enormous.

Stepping in to foot part of the bill is exactly what "paying to keep it off opposing platforms" means.

There is no difference.

And I still don't believe for a second the Titanfall story that it would have been cancelled. All it takes is for someone to have the "Ship up or there will be dire consequences!" conversation and you can claim it was in danger of cancellation without it ever really being in any danger.
Lol, go read the actual history. It isn't PR bs. Download the "Final Hours of Titanfall"
It should make more sense to you afterwards.

The game media pretending they believe this is a permanent exclusive just proves the point that they are just corporate PR channels.

Stop acting like this is some evil move. Its business. And we might get a better game because of it.

I have nothing to say about Bloodborne except that it's not the same. It was announced as PS4 exclusive and it's new IP too.

Also better game? It's cross-gen and only on the less powerful next-gen platform. I seriously doubt it.

I am not him, but Everybody's gone to the rapture comes to mind. Was announced for PC.

IIRC that's because the PC version was going to wind up not making it financially.

Yup wikipedia (at least assuming this is correct):

Unlike Dear Esther before it, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture will not appear on PCs, instead being a PS4 exclusive. The team made the decision to partner with Sony as they felt they could not raise enough money for the project through crowd funding sources or through sales of alpha versions

Wow. Nothing against exclusives when companies are bringing games to market that wouldn't get there without it, but deals like this feel anti-consumer and leave a bad taste in my mouth. Played 2013's Tomb Raider on PC, likely will have to miss out on the next one.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
This actually sets a dangerous precedent for MS now. TR is a fairly sizable franchise, one that I thought would be too big to moneyhat. What's to stop MS from shelling out for bigger franchises like Fallout, Final Fantasy, etc? Only franchises that seem safe for now are mega blockbusters like Call of Duty and GTA.

Nothing. But I doubt Bethesda, Activision and Take-Two would be as susceptible to "moneyhats" as Squeenix.

If the plan was to counter Uncharted then Square Enix is dumber than I could have ever imagined. Uncharted is popular but so is Tomb Raider and I know a ton of people who prefer TR over UC and will be pissed when they find this out.

Ähhm

thats basically the point from MS, that you as a PS uses get pissed and then buy their system ;)

People joke, but I can see what happened with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and make a Deluxe version for PC/PS4/XO in a year or two.

LOL

On topic.. smells like moneyhats from 10 miles away. (but good for CD I guess)

Anyway..I'll wait in hope for a Rise of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on PS4.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Very surprising! Especially considering how Xbox One and Wii U are seemingly BFF in Europe (aside from UK) and how the console is losing to PS4 in USA and UK as well XD

No, seriously, that was unexpected.

Should MS try to build more first party studios, for "real" first party exclusives, in-house developed? Yeah, in the long term, the fact they rely much more on third party-developed exclusives could bite them in the back a lot.

Should MS completely stop picking exclusives from third parties? Absolutely no, since it's still a way to create value for your platform, and that's needed for a suffering platform. Short-term maybe, but it still generates attention.

Keeping an eye on this. Surprising move, MS.

Oh well, guess I won't be playing it at all if they don't bring it to PC at some point. Microsoft proving once again what a blight they are on the entire industry, throwing money around to keep content off of competing platforms, rather than spending it on creating stuff of their own.

The Holiday 2015 battle between Uncharted 4 and this is going to be very interesting. I hope they release on the same day for ease of comparison.

Given what happened with the Definitive Edition, does that mean Rise of the Tomb Raider is 30fps rather than a possible 60fps it might have been on PS4? Way too early, I know, but it's a fair point.

NeoGaf in a nutshell:

PS4 exclusive: "Great move Sony, good on you guys *hugs ps4*

Xbox One exclusive: "Fuck M$$$$$$$, using shitloads of cash again to actually compete in a business world, I'm not buying it! (I own a Xbox One, or at least I'm saying that to seem less biased)."
Lol... please tell me about that sequel to a highly anticipated franchise that sold better on XBOX that Sony bought.

This is very disappointing to say the least. Why are Microsoft paying money to lock people out of having the best possible experience with a promising game? I really enjoyed Tomb Raider (2013) on PC, in glorious 60 frames per second and with crystal clear image quality. Exclusivity for xbone means that both of the aspects will be worse in the sequel compared with the previous game.

Liked the last one (except some story elements and the ending), it was a very good game and hopefully the new one will be a good game too.

Don't see how it will influence me to buy an Xbox one though.

But my point is that doesn't help your game at all. Money up front in exchange for not growing a new franchise and loss of money in the future?

maybe the bigwigs in SE got disappointed about the sales of TR , either way I think they weren't too confident of the future sales of this game and wanted the guaranteed cash instead
