Yes, making the system more attractive to buyers is what they should be doing. Jeez, it's like people forget this is a business. This has been going on for decades. They are competing for money, they are not people's friends. If you want to play the game in Holiday 2015, you can buy and XBO and play it; if not, have fun with the hundreds of other games available. It's not anti-consumer. I feel like people treat this like a holy war or something when it's just entertainment. It amazes me how such an ostensibly hardcore gaming forum gets so tied up in what system a game is on after all these years, when you would think that when gaming is such an important hobby to most members, they would understand the industry and the competition and simply say, "Hey that system now has a lot of games I'm interested in, maybe I'll pick it up", instead of "MS/Sony/Nintendo is an anti-consumer devil who is restricting my enjoyment of my only console; I'll never buy their systems even if they have games I like because I made one choice and I'm sticking to it forever."
Funny thing I didn't hear this from Xbox fans when Destiny got exclusive content for a year. Maybe Playstation fans are bit too sensitive. You will probably get to play the game in Jan or Feb. It's not that big of deal.
Exclusive content is a bit different than exclusive game. And yes, there were XBO fans and plenty of them that were saying they were going to avoid Destiny due to the practice.
The point with exclusives like this aren't always that the game by itself being the selling point but it being part of a larger roster that makes it enticing to a potential customer.
I agree. I dislike MS, but I can see this is good for them in the sense they add more variety to their library. It will probably get slaughtered by UC4 though.
Timed exclusive or exclusive exclusive, I'm sorry, but I'm not buying this game. If Square-Enix treats me as a second-rate customer, then so be it. They won't get my money.
What a bunch of bullshit lol, here let me fix your press release for you.
Dear Tomb Raider Community,
As you may have seen, weve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. Id like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel were creating at the studio.
The Sony Brand is finally over. Maybe next decade!
It's over, period. Sony lost their last ace, and that's the end of their PS4 hopes and dreams.
It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PS4. Sony has nothing left, nothing they can reveal today would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a PS4. Except if they want to play Bloodborne. Which will also come to XboxOne at some point.
Love the sarcasm Man, too many people melting down. Come on PS4 peeps, the game is eventually going to come out on PS4. Nothing is ever exclusive or "I'll cut off my head" remember
I don't know why in the world you're defending this. It's a huge AAA sequel to a game that came out on other platforms as recently as early this year. Nobody should be happy with this. I have an Xbox One so I'm fine, but I'm certainly not going to defend it.
I'm just calling out people's selective outrage around here. It's very hip to hate the Xbox brand right now. It's pretty easy to see the usual suspects showing up in a thread like this to condemn this crime against humanity. Many of them would not be having the same reaction is this announcement was about PS4 exclusivity.
I'm a fan of great videogames. I really don't care how I end up getting to play them. I've said it many times here. In fact, in many ways I'd prefer it if every game was exclusive to one platform, because I tend to think exclusive games are often better experiences. When a development team can focus on making the best game they can on one platform, it always means good things for the end product.
I also know that triple A game development is getting really complicated these days, and we see it discussed here all the time. Studios close down, people get laid off, etc. It's tough to fund a massive game like Tomb Raider, and make it a profitable endeavor. So when I see something like this happen, I suspect there could be more to the story.
For many studios it's a fight for survival these days. I'm not the least big surprised to see them take some extra money when they can. I just see it as cool that another great Tomb Raider game is on the way. What platform I end up playing it on ultimately means little to me.
This seems like a move that will hurt Tomb Raider and square more than it will help Xbox. TR is a big enough brand to where this will make waves, but not big enough to where it will cause people to jump ship or but an XBone. Sucks for PC and ps players who were fans though.
Boom. Even if everyone had all consoles (we don't), it not being on PS4 or PC limits the graphics, modding capabilities, remote play/other PS exclusive features. Silly to say it only hurts fanboys.
That wording is so specific and airtight that it screams timed exclusive, but since they're publishing it, it makes me think a PC version is coming later, not anything else.
I am thinking this way too. MS has no issues announcing PC and Xbox together. I think the wording is saying a PC port will happen later. Still though, not on Playstation when the last game sold the most on those platforms is so odd.
I don't own an Xbox One..
I don't plan on buying One this Gen.
But,
I might pick myself up a copy of this Rise of Tomb Raider, for shits and giggles.
I'll place it in front of the Playstation 4 and whisper to it.
"Drakes asking me if you want to touch it".

Well they just made me decide not to buy an Xbox console. Maybe I'll pick one up used, for cheap, with used games but that's about as far as I'll go if at all.

So if you are a PC-only gamer, or a PS4-only gamer, you are automatically a fanboy?
Because you are "hurting" these people by cockblocking the new Tomb Raider.
After the first game didn't really match expectations in terms of sales they get a massive lump sum up front (which will offset some of the lost sales). Then, as we saw with Titanfall, MS will push the game with a huge marketing campaign backed by muchos dineros.
Failing sales expectations is not that unusual for a "new" franchise (well, it was TR but it still had to prove itself). But Square could have definitely built on the great word of mouth that came afterwards. The sequel was pretty much guaranteed to sell more AND cost less (because the basic gameplay has already been set; playing TR2013 I thin that everyone easily noticed that this game went through several major revisions).
Mass Effect came out 5 years down the road on PS3. At that point, most of the sales have been done. I wouldn't be surprised if EA had to buy back the rights or something to release ME on the PS3.

Hey Square, go die in a fire you worthless POS company.
Way to make Tomb Raider exclusive to the Xbox One. Scared that you won't meet sales targets without Microsoft's money huh? Fuck you if you think I'm paying for this now after you just shat on your fanbase. That's going to hold up, right? Fucking making this exclusive to the Xbox One despite Tomb Raider's history on the Playstation? You're a bunch of clowns. I take it as a personal insult that you mouthbreathers are allowed to make decisions with regards to how franchises I used to really love are handled. Your asses got bailed out when you purchased Eidos because their president, like all of you, was a complete and utter mook. I make two better executives than your entire company combined in the toilet every morning before I go to work. I look forward to the day that your company crashes and burns into the fucking sea, only to be picked apart as salvage by western iOS developers, at which time the franchises you've already defiled with incompetence and negligence can be finally whored out to smartphones.
That's assuming you asshats don't beat your eventual western smartphone overlords to the punch, which you probably will because you give fuck all about the legacy of these franchises, to say nothing about just how little regard you hold towards the fans who made them what they where.
As the owner of a PS4 please go swallow glass
Never been more appropriate It's a joke if people didn't catch on btw.

Interesting tactic.... I mean risk vs reward... How many ps4 owers are going to buy a Xbox to play this instead of waiting for a 2016 port, vs how many existing ps4 TR owners who might get seriously butthurt over this and be done with the game untill it shows up for free on ps+ some far way down the road....
I don't think this was done to convert PS4 owners to Xbox One owners. This is for the PS3/Xbox 360 gamers looking to jump to upgrade. TR alone is not a system seller, but alongside Halo 5 and any other Xbox exclusive makes The One look appealing. This was a great and necessary move by MS.
This should really be in the OP of the thread. Microsoft is funding the game (similar to how many have said Sony is funding No Man's Sky) -- it's not a simple money grab.
