Well, that was a wonderful breakfast; time to see what's going on in the Tomb Raider thr-

This thread took a really weird turn.

Could this be another Titanfall situation, where it's timed at first, but MS will eventually buy full exclusivity? Could that also be a reason why there aren't any straight answers regarding the exclusivity? That they're still discussing terms for full exclusivity?

They don't pay to develop a game, they pay to avoid a game to be available on other platforms...

It´s not very " fair " but that's the game ! It's a business.

If some of you seriously think TR will rival UC you are crazy.
UC4 will probably sell 3-5 million on its first day, TR doesnt seem to sell this much in its first month.

It's not about going toe to toe on certain titles, it is about demonstrating that you have studios making games and are investing in games. Microsoft are demonstrating that they won't move beyond their core franchises (which is incredibly risky) and that they would rather secure a window on an established title than fund their own.

Agreed, Microsoft realized that they had a serious hole in their lineup and purchased timed exclusivity for something to fit the hole (made apparent by Uncharted 4).

MS securing Tomb Raider as an exclusive is a good thing, i dont understand why people are angry. Its a power play to remove games from their rivals, this happens in many other industries on an everyday bases, Business is Business.. this will only boost creativity and game innovation for Sony.

I've seen some ignorant posts on GAF but this takes the cake. What in the actual fuck?!?

Yes moneyhatting a multiplatform exclusive boosts creativity and innovation on the competing system that makes perfect sense. Mein Gott. People be crazy y'all.

Well this is annoying because I have a PS4 and never got into the Uncharted games, yet I liked and finished a Tomb Raider. God dammit.

When it comes out on XOne it will be considered by Xbox fans as an uncharted killer. When it comes out on ps4 and PC it will be considered an uncharted tier action game because of all the debate. This move is going to drastically improve the reputation and perceived quality of the franchise.
What happens if it sells less on XB1 than Uncharted on PS4 and if it reviews less well?

Will it have been elevated as a brand or diminished?

There's a decent chance this is going to hurt TR brand not help it. ND are probably quietly pleased - they're going to launch on the bigger install base with zero competition from a similar game and are coming off the huge goodwill and results of TLOU.

This isn't a slam dunk PR/Brand win - given the reactions personally I'd say CD & SE may well have chosen poorly in that regard.

Or the new Hitman :p

SE are sending a very confusing message to gamers.

Dude, can you just....can we not even talk about...the H game turning exclusive? I don't like even thinking about it. They can take our Peggle 2, they can take our Tomb Raider, but I won't sit here and let them take our Hitman!

*sits there, does nothing*

I find it very hard to believe that Tomb Raider will only be exclusive on XBOX ONE.

I am pretty confident that there will be a release gap between consoles such as Plants VS Zombies Garden Warfare.

On that note.. PS + will have so many games for me to be occupied between the PS4, Vita and PS3 that i dont care. Kudos to MS for securing that deal but im good.

He's right. The definitive version of the game in terms of visual fidelity and content is very likely to be on the competing platforms. More cash on hand now means, potentially, more money for development of the core game as well as dlc content and a larger advertising budget. I get why gamers are upset but for the franchise and the game itself this is a very positive turn of events.

When/if the game eventually comes to the PS4/PC, I sure as hell won't buy it at a full price due to the later release date. I hope many others do the same, and vote with their wallets against this kind of business practise.

Look at U3 launch and TLOU sales - sure they launched to bigger install base but those aren't crazy numbers for the franchise or developer.

Given how popular PS4's tracking U4 might even outperform U3.
SE is basically going to boost the sales. I can see it selling 3-4 million in a week.

It's because a large proportion of the early 360 cycle was filled with "we won Tekken!" and "we won Final Fantasy!" along with a raft of seemingly 360 only titles like Bioshock and Mass Effect. Heady conference times for Microsoft.

As it is the only thing they've known, they must have looked to that strategy again as a win. It's just not the same market though and they've had quite a few warnings that the goalposts have moved since the X1 was launched.

In those cases, they were either new IPs or just a third party dev adding 360 to the existing release platforms.

This is a different, crappy move.

Being slammed into irrelevancy by the backlash is now a good thing?
Have you seen any media on this game?

I think MS is not looking at it like that. TR doesn't have to rival UC4 he's to head. Halo 5 will be Microsoft's game to rival any other platform's big seller. When TR is the other exclusive offered, the lineup looks alot better for MS. And I still contend most gamers (and parents who purchase consoles for their children) are not as passionate about TR's exclusivity as GAFfers. Its a gamble for sure but it may or may not pay off. Stay tuned.

I did not know that the sequel to a mediocre Uncharted-clone with more more violence has that many fans here. Its kinda sad really, considering that the last game (and probably this game, too) did not set the world on fire at all.
It was a typical third person "cinematic" action game, with the twist that it starred a girl this time. And if it is indeed timed exclusive, what the fuck is the problem?

People consider Uncharted a system seller and I could beat any two of those in the time it took me to play through Tomb Raider once.

(personally i dont think there really system sellers) well UC2 maybe, amazing single player and surprisingly brilliant multiplayer. Plus the pedigree of the developer behind the series probably has alot to do with it. But in terms of length, there about the same for the average first time playthrough.

For someone who is been supporting the franchise since day one across different platforms, this is a fucking slap in the face.

Temple of Osiris won't be getting my money either.

Don't know if I'm disappointed more with Microsoft or Square Enix/Crystal Dynamics.

Kinda makes me want to put of buying a Xbone considering the MCC isn't going to be worth it like Halo 5. Oh well.

Did you even read his post. That is not what he said at all. He said the fact that this game was bought by MS would encourage more innovation from Sony. Which makes zero sense. Here read it again:

And tell me how that says anything about more cash on hand for Tomb Raider.

Must be causing Xbone's image more harm then good it seems.

On another note, Microsoft seem to forget they own a bucket load of great IP. I would rather they spent that money to get third parties to make a new Banjo or PD instead.

So let's say we'll see a TR vs. U4 showdown in Fall 2015, I hope this brings the best out of both teams. Two amazing action adventures would be great.

TR 2013 was a really good game. Just because you weren't so impressed doesn't mean it doesn't have fans.

This mirrors my feelings, I was all for getting an XB1 for quantum break and sunset overdrive, but now I don't want them to think it was down to this, so I may well hold off. It was this kind of crap that put me off getting a 360 initially, I would rather MS use their money to develop new IP.

Not sure if I blame MS, they don't know any better. But it seems strange of SE to reduce their potential market so significantly, which leads me to believe that come early 2016 it will be out in all other platforms.

I don't know why you'd be disappointed with MS, they're just a company who proposed a deal with SQE very beneficial to them. It is however SQE's fault that they took that deal, alienating a large portion of their audience and potentially damaging long term sustainability of one of their IPs.

In general I'm finding the hate directed at MS as opposed to SQE really weird.

Just went to Crystal Dynamics FB page and yup exactly what I expected.
I feel bad for them, they had no say in this and due to the contract they have to keep their mouths shut and get the hatred of the community.
