Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I give up on HL2.

Titans of Space, however, is amazing. Works immediately in direct mode without a fuss. No blur. No judder. Great framerate. I wish more demos could be this easy to get up and running without issues.

I'm getting judder in Titans, and it took three attempts to get it to display on the headset instead of on the monitor, and it crashed the first time. Most demos run smoothly for me.

It seems DK2 is just pretty inconsistent for everyone.

Hmmm, so it seems.

Makes me wonder how Oculus is going to get the consumer version to play nice on so many different setups.

I can't run Titans of Space 1.52 at all. Just crashes instantly whether I choose Direct or Extended mode. Weird since I didn't have any issues with any of the earlier DK1 versions in the past.

Following this guide...

http://www.roadtovr.com/how-to-enab...eamvr-steam-big-picture-virtual-reality-mode/

if you select properties for HL2 and in the general tab and change launch options to, -refresh 75 -freq 75.

When in the game bring up the dev console and type ‘disconnect’ followed by ‘fps_max 75′, then type 'net_graph 1' to bring up the frame rate info, im getting....

Fps: 299
In: 80
Out: 115

should these all be set to 75 as ive locked the frame rate to 75fps??

As i notice when i move my head im getting ever so slight judder/stutter on the tracking is this normal?

What are you having trouble with?

I don't know exactly or where or how to begin diagnosing it. Every time I try a suggestion, I get a different result. I've tried so many different ways of starting it up, that I just gave up on it. Too much of a pain in the butt to deal with.

Try the guide i linked above!.

I noticed once i did all that the the VR mode, was disabled again in the video options and had to re-enable it once again. After that everything was fine

Haha, yeah... I can't run "The Chair", it stutters all over the place even though the developer said they had optimized it a lot. I get down to 35fps in the start.. But in Titans of Space I get constant ~250 fps without vsync, it's butter smooth like no other.

Radial-G demo is also very smooth, though it's a bitch to set up since it's only rift mode during the actual game, and not the initial menus.

I think Titans of Space is my new favorite demo. Sent the dev a few bucks (you should, too!), he really deserves it. Amazing work.
- Direct HMD access is dope
- 75fps, low persistance, no black smearing, perfect orientation out of the box
- All these options! Every demo/game needs to have ân overview for the hotkeys!
- great educational demo to show off
- dat perfect body. I think I felt what people describe as presence for a few seconds when I looked down (had my hands put down exactly like the body, was also sitting in a similair char - everything was so perfectly believable)

I prefer the old version of Titans of Space as all the planets are visible at all times and aren't sliding on and off the screen. Try running the older version on the DK2 , change the FoV to around 60-70 and keep your head very still..

Managed to get HL:2 working, finally.. Started a new game and managed about 45 minutes before the sicky feeling took hold and I had to remove the headset. Looks nice. Not sure if I can carry on playing it for a full playthrough though.

Hopefully, next they'll sort out Kairo, Strike Suit Zero and Retrovirus for the DK2.

Mirror to desktop actually working?
Are you talking to me? Yeah, the mirroring works fine :)

Sounds interesting. Might give it a try. Maybe he updates the app with this way of viewing the planets sometime.

I want to try one so badly, but living in the South West of the UK, I'm not even sure where the nearest place would be.

Wish I'd just had the foresight to buy one earlier.

Half Life 2 gave me nausea :( I was so excited to receive my rift. But each time I turn with the keyboard or gamepad, it's instant nausea. It's like it tells me my body is moving, but since my body doesn't feel it it screws with my brain.

I hope I can get used to it :( So sad.

I thought the judder was rumored to be a result of an issue with the camera tracking..? If so, this seems fixable. It sucks for everyone who ordered within the first few minutes and already has their kit, but by the time the rest of us get our hardware it seems likely that a lot of these issues will be fixed.

I ordered mine 4 minutes after the page went live, but paypal wouldn't complete the transaction so my order essentially counts as being placed in August. Bad times.

Same here. There's a lot of judder/stutter even with 75fps locked. I hope Valve keeps working on it. Ideally every demo/game should run like the config utility demo scene. But even then a first-person shooter is a first-person shooter, I'm not sure that genre is good for VR.

I'm not convinced FPS games are ever going to feel comfortable (for some people) if you're not physically walking around the environment. The difference in nausea between FPS-type demos and seated demos is dramatic in my experience. Only seated demos feel right to me. (However, standing and physically walking a couple of steps within the positional tracking view in the 4th Floor demo felt amazing). Playing something like HL2 if you're new to VR is jumping in at the deep end - you're playing a game not designed for VR, not suited to the 'seated experience', has no body/avatar reference, and has unrealistic movement speed and animation. It ticks almost all the boxes for being the most nausea-inducing of game types, so don't give up on VR just yet!

It could be, but it's so variable between users. I've had totally smooth demos where others were juddering, and the ones that I've regularly seen described as judder-free are juddery for me.

omg duke3D yes yes MORE MORE. Quake 2 didn't make me sick, HL2 wasn't making me sick, but Duke 3D might be a whole new world of jank, lol.

When Doom gets DK2 support, which inevitably will happen, I'll have to make a GZDoom-based ManDoom (since it will undoubtedly be GZDoom that gets it).

edit: aw, no Valve control scheme. I've really grown to love it. Ah well, I'll still check it out.

Need a special binary of the emulator you can get here:
https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=11241&hilit=dolphin#p149717

After that, set your DK2 in extended mode before starting it, and it should work without having to do anything else.

Thanks, ok I tried that but with f-zero the screen was super stretched and it was like I was ways to close to the display.

On another note, Where are you supposed to place the folder from the Oculus SDK zip file when you download it?, I know that the oculus runtime is a self installing program which installs to c:\program files\oculus, but where do you place the Oculus SDK??

Not all games work with Oculus. I tried Crazy Taxi, and it worked fine aside from some shadow glitches.

The SDK is a programming resource. You can put it wherever.

Btw, what I also tested last night in Titans of Space: Positional tracking & low persistence ON/OFF. I couldn't believe the difference, it's just sooooo huge. Without positional tracking everything feels so wrong and I'm separated from my body. Every movement was just wrong and not 1:1 anymore. And I got sick in a very short time. And without low persistence it's so blurry that I can't see anything while moving my head, makes no fun at all.

Now I know how shitty the DK1 was. It's like day and night.

Is there anyway to eradicate the very slight judder/stutter you get in HL2 when moving your head to look, someone suggested using RadeonPro but I'm not sure what to do??

Mh, I don't think so - haven't checked out the options in-depth tho so I could have missed it.

Yeah, compatibility ranges from not working at all to very good.
I for one tried Monster Hunter G and it worked great out of the box. 30fps lock is a bit stupid and 2D UI elements tend to flicker (HUD sometimes disappears in-quest due to 2D lightning layers) but else... very good.

Steam says I've played 4 hours of HL2, looks like I'm getting used to it :p now I get slight nauseas but not as bad as the first one. The airboat section was kinda awkward and annoying since you have to aim with your head, glad it's over, now I'm in Ravenholm!

Also just tried out Uncharted Territory, worked in direct mode with no issues, explored for a bit but I couldn't find anything.

Finally got to try out the oculus last night. Tried Titans of Space for my first real demo, it was pretty neat. Also got HL2 working, played thirty minutes or so. Ironically the worst part of the OR so far for me has been the lack of padding for my nose; it's the only thing that actually bothers me. It's putting so much pressure on the bridge of my nose that I'm getting a headache xD. Straps are as loose as they can be; gonna mess around with the lense distance today and see if that helps >.<. Might try putting a small cloth in there if all else fails.

Other than that I guess I've been really lucky, only felt slight nausea after hl2 and it went away immediately when I took the headset off. I've never been prone to motion sickness either though.

Isn't that your problem there? The straps being super loose means the top and back of your head aren't supporting the Rift, instead all its weight is being held up by your nose.

exactly, tighten the top and sides. I have a big nose but I don't feel any pressure on my nosebridge; it's being pulling from the top and pressed into my forehead/temples where the foam is sufficient

7 year old son of my brother tried the rift out today. He was constantly laughing and asked where his hands are xD

lol my little brother did the same thing :D I gotta show him some more stuff.
He liked the desk demo and wanted to grab the stuff there (so did I), Tuscany didn't seem to impress him but he told me later that he actually got sick a bit when moving around so that is why he probably wasn't amazed by it. He actually insisted to watch and really enjoyed the hip replacement video that has been posted on reddit lately (wants to be a surgeon later :p). Will show him Titans of Space later and can't wait to show him Minecrift once the DK2 version is out :D

Also, I found this in the GAF Unreal Engine 4 thread and I really want this for the DK2. Looks great and very suitable for VR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c88kdTPaXZQ (also posted it on the subreddit, hopefully somebody will get it going http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2dpv5f/can_we_have_this_new_ue4_sample_for_the_dk2_it/)

Which games work in direct mode for you guys? So that you the mirroring to your TFT is actually working?

Desk demo, Tuscany, Titans of Space...that's it for me :/

It just makes much more fun to show it to other people when you can see what they are looking at.

Did you try Uncharted Territory? Worked in direct mode for me with no issues. Not a very exciting demo though.

I tried that last night but it just made it more uncomfortable, I'll keep messing around with the straps though.

Didn't really notice the problem today, not sure why. HL2 gave me a bit of nausea today too; think it didn't bother me before because I was doing the slow parts, whereas now I'm running around like a madman.

Edit: Actually I think it wasn't my nose, I think it was my eye sockets were be pushed by the edge of the lense; I just set the lenses to be as far as possible and the problem seems fixed xD

Just tried Sightline: The Chair, and that was definitely one of the VR highlights. Very cool experience, despite a bit of judder at times.

You know, I was talking to my brother about DK2 last night and he brought up the idea that the only way Rift will work as a widespread consumer product is if it becomes its own closed hardware console box so that all the games can be specifically tailored to run smooth and easily on it.

I could definitely see that happening down the line. A standalone product of its own, so everyone gets the same experience.

The problem is that it will require 75-90 hertz and a resolution of 4K. What kind of computer can run games in these conditions? Also motion sickness...
