Matthew Tollis (21)

Inside a SWAT Prank Ring Allegedly Composed of X-Box Gamers

The malicious prank of "swatting" -- calling in false emergencies that send swarms of heavily armed cops to a school or home -- is often perpetrated by X-Box gamers who occasionally hijack peoples' Twitter or Facebook accounts and refuse to release them unless the victims make a swatting call, according to an affidavit filed in federal court.

The affidavit cites the case of Matthew Tollis, of Wethersfield, Connecticut, who is accused of taking part in seven swatting calls. Tollis was allegedly part of a group that threatened to bomb the University of Connecticut, attack the home of an individual in Connecticut, create false threats to school across the country, and in one ghoulish call told police that a man with an assault rifle was headed to the new Sandy Hook Elementary School, the scene of a notorious massacre of staff and first graders.

Tollis claimed to federal investigators that he began taking part in the swatting calls after he was targeted online by hackers who "doxed" him, a tactic of posting online all of his personal information, including Social Security numbers and passwords, and "pizza bombing" him, sending large numbers of pizzas to his house which he then had to pay for, according to the federal document.

“Tollis explained that he began to look for ways to protect himself and his family from online abuse,” FBI investigators wrote in the federal affidavit obtained by ABC News. He told the FBI he joined a group of gamers who called themselves “TeAM Crucifix or Die” (TCOD) because “it would discourage others from bullying him.”

The group's membership allegedly includes gamers who live in the United Kingdom and use names like Verified, Jordy and Declaws, the affidavit states. Tollis used the name Hxrbor, according to the document.

Tollis, 21, was arrested Sept. 3, for his alleged role in the April 3 swatting call that claimed there was a bomb at the University of Connecticut. He is charged with three counts connected to the UConn incident as well as three counts of federal conspiracy and aiding and abetting.

Tollis' attorney Jeremy Weingast had no comment on Friday before Tollis was due in federal court.

When he was interviewed by investigators, Tollis said he was involved in a total of seven swatting calls, including calls to a high school in Texas, two in New Jersey and one in Florida, the document states. There were also threats made against Boston University and the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Tollis denied making the calls himself, "but admitted that he had laughed in the background of the calls,” the affidavit states.

He also told investigator he knew about a host of others that the group allegedly perpetrated, including the call regarding Sandy Hook Elementary School, the document states.

“I was scared of being their next target so I did not inform the Authorities of their Actions,” Tollis wrote in the statement, according to the affidavit. “I stood by and watched as resources were wasted for hoax calls. I did so out of fear and regret associating myself with these people."

The federal affidavit, filed Sept. 9 in U.S. District Court in New Haven, Conn., said "the group primarily consists of Microsoft X-Box players or gamers." It described how a victim of doxing may have their personal identity details publicized or have their Twitter account taken over with the hackers "extorting individuals seeking to regain control of their Twitter accounting by requiring the individual to, among other things, send nude photos of themselves or calling the police to report an incident that would require specialized units like SWAT or the bomb squad to respond (swatting,)" the affidavit states.

Microsoft, which created the Xbox, said that they do not comment on specific cases but are "committed" to trying to prevent gamers from using their consoles for illegal activity.

"Any criminal activity occurring over Xbox Live is a violation of our Terms of Use. We have a dedicated enforcement team who supports efforts of law enforcement officials in the pursuit of potentially criminal incidents occurring over the service," a Microsoft spokesperson told ABC News.

Brian Krebs is a cybersecurity expert who has been swatted several times and said swatters carry out the pranks "for fun," but said not only do the pranks divert vital resources that may be needed elsewhere, it is very dangerous.

"The problem is these police forces when they show up, they show up heavily armed. The police force that showed up at my home wasn't a SWAT team, but had automatic weapons," said Krebs, who runs a cybersecurity site.

"These situations can get very intense very quickly," he said. "These guys come in and they're pumped. They're ready to respond to a high energy intense situation and their fingers are on the trigger. This is going to be a bad situation at some point when they kick in a door and somebody is defending their home."

Tollis, who could not be reached for comment, is scheduled to appear in federal court Friday and in state court later this month.

FBI has an open ongoing investigation and additional arrests are anticipated.

Looks like they also called in a bomb threat to PAX East in Boston at the BCEC, so this explains the bag search and extra security at the front door perhaps?

From the Daily Mail

The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center was hosting an exhibition for gamers with attendance predicted to reach 60,000, when it received a bomb threat.
The caller identified himself as Matt Haag, an Iraqi national 'working for Allah' and said he had planted plastic explosives around the building the night before.

I hate it how swatting is being considered by many to be a prank. Pranks are supposed to have humerous punch lines and twists that end without harm. Swatting is a malicious attack that has the potential to kill anybody that falls victim to it.

Indeed, calling swat teams on people and calling in bomb threats is not and never will be "a prank", its extremely dangerous and frankly I'm astonished it hasn't resulted in loads of deaths already.

I'm not sure it pertains, but I'd actually put it more towards the terrorism end of a crime considering the bomb threats that some call in and its miles away from being a prank..

^this!

I don't live in the US. Still I feel that this "trend" is going beyond any reason. Please stop it, please...

I think my biggest question after reading this is "why did the victim have to pay for the pizzas?" Can't you just turn the delivery guy away if you didn't order them? They can't force you to pay for something you didn't order.

I don't think the owner would be happy to see the delivery guy come back every night with 20 rejected pizzas. Of course you are not obliged to pay, but I see why they try to force you to take the pizza once they're at your door.

I agree, it's more trolling rather than a prank, troll is just the new word for asshole and I don't find even find minor, harmless forms of trolling funny.

I'm confused by the xbox and Twitter stuff...it's like the consider it the same thing in the article.

Either way, lock'em up

Major jail time for "swatting" needs to be doled out.

I think some responses got deleted, because they really don't belong here.

Anyways, I hope these people involved will get some years for doing that. Hopefully others will then be "scared" and stop doing these "pranks".

Who gives a fuck what the owner thinks. I ain't paying for 20 pizzas I didn't order.

Yes i agree with this. All these assholes who do this go behind bars period i feel nothing for those idiots ruin and almost kill others in there mind as a joke.

Jesus. That is so terrible. And dangerous, frankly, they could be needed elsewhere. And I hope those people didn't have dogs that showed any aggression toward the SWAT team because they are required to shoot them if they are (as much as the cops may hate to do it).

What an asshole. I hope no one here is going to defend him.

I find that incredibly unlikely. They may have had M4s or something similar, but they would have been semiautomatic.

Looked up the case a little bit more, this is golden, Tollis' Dad is a state trooper and his Mom helped bail him out on bond. Tollis is facing 15 years if convicted:

Matthew Tollis was arrested on federal charges Wednesday. He told police he is the son of a Connecticut state trooper, according to the arrest warrant application.

He is required to remain on home confinement with electric monitoring, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

He appeared in court Friday and was released on $100,000 bond, co-signed by his mother, who has been appointed a third-party custodian.

Tollis is not allowed access to phones, computers, gaming devices or other electronics with Internet capabilities. Other devices in the house must remain password protected, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Tollis is charged with conspiring to engage in a bomb threat hoax, aiding and abetting a bomb threat hoax and aiding and abetting the malicious conveying of false information regarding an attempt or alleged attempt to kill, injure or intimidate or to unlawfully damage or destroy a building or personal property by means of an explosive.

He could face a total of 15 years in prison if convicted on federal charges.

This guy is going to have the book thrown at him

Good.

The last fucking thing you want is to be confronted by an amped up fucking SWAT TEAM, or even a host of local goons with automatic weapons. They're playing with people's lives, and deserve whatever the maximum is. Fuck them.

Pranks are supposed to be relatively harmless fun, not potentially life threatening.

Filth. Human fucking garbage.

Are you serious!? 0_0

So if the owner that's getting swatted on had two little dogs like Shitzus or something that just like to bark, they would just shoot them no questions asked?

I can't believe that. I just can't. :(

Yeah it's true I've seen videos like that on liveleak years ago.

I'm just glad they finally found out who was responsible for most of those incidences.

My worst fear was that they would get away with it without consequence.

Not really buying that he was trying to protect his family since he was involved in seven calls and laughed in the background for some of them.

He still can. He hasn't had his trial yet and he was just bailed out by his mother to be at home.

Hopefully the prosecution doesn't screw this up. We should send Jack Mccoy to take the case.

Why do them make the emphasis on the Xbox? Any criminal may have played a game in hos life, so why do this? They're hackers and lowlife, scumbags; end of story.

They aren't required to shoot them. They may if they feel threatened, but it isn't SOP.

Good. I hope he gets sentenced to 15 years. It will show others, that this isn't a joke or a game.

Edit: Good to see, that the FBI is working with other countries. Canada earlier this year and now with the UK.

...I'm gonna go hug my dogs now. :(

Only happens, when the dog is a little bigger and if the dog actually attacks a cop. Barking doesn't do anything.

A lot of these idiots don't have a clue how much stress SWAT is under when they arrive at a call. These guys realize that they very likely may be injured or killed and as such they are amped up and mistakes happen all the time.

The punishment for this especially when adults do it should be very severe.

Hopefully he gets the full 15 years for this shit. Also, I really doubt it, but I hope his father being a trooper doesn't effect the outcome here.

Well, i would not be surprised if he gets a hard punishment. They probably want to sent a message that this is not a joke but a felony. Good. If you do it with 8 you maybe don't really realise what you do but with 20 years, there is no excuse. And the connection to xbox is a bit weak. Every platform has stupid people and alot don't have only one system.
