What's so good about MK8\smash?

I have a wiiU, but I never even considered buying this game.
Suddenly I see it's getting much praise here on GAF.
Can you please explain what's so good about this game?
Also, does it have anything to offer in single player?

Same goes for smash.

Well MK8 is plain fun. I prefer Super Mario Kart, but I it's much better than the Wii and most of the GC entry. Not a huge Smash fan so can't sell you there.

It's more about the mutiplayer for MK8. Singleplayer MK8 would get boring fast.

They're fun to play (MK8 is as least. I imagine Smash will be too).

Both 8 and Smash are great party games that are a ton of fun to play with family, friends, etc.. They're also great single player games, but their main draw is the multiplayer aspect.

Two fantastic games, and yes you can spend hours with it singleplayer. I think that most Nintendo games greatly benefit from playing with friends and family, but that's just me.

You should try them out if you have the chance.

Nope(didn't even hear about smash until a few days ago).

I find it really hard to believe that someone is not exposed to the popularity of either franchise, considering they were two of the best selling games last generation (actually of every generation). Both series didn't just getting much praise suddenly, they have always been two of the most revered series in video game industry.

Have you played any previous games? It's more of the same.

Any Nintendo game will get praised to shit around here. When you're talking about games with huge, dedicated fanbases here, you will find very little rational discussion. Only stupid "hype" posts and dumb gifs.

Well...they are fun and accessible. Grab any of your friends, hand them a controller, short explanation of controls and they are good to go.

Concepts are simple enogh for everyone to understand them pretty much immediately. And on the WiiU both games are just drop-dead gorgeous and bursting with charisma and personality <3

Well now you're just lying.

Give them a try, then. They're both 'party games' with a lot of depth and replay value to them. They have insane production values and smash will kinda blow you away with the amount of content packed into one game. You can also play them by yourself (tons of single player stuff to do) and online. Give them a try, they're loads of fun.

Way to contribute to the thread in a meaningful way.

Smash Brothers is an acessible fighting game with a host of Nintendo characters that has a formula that hasn't really been well replicated by any other game.
Mario Kart 8 is pretty good. If you like racing games and have friends to play with I definitely recommend it.

Also you own a Wii U and only heard about Smash a few days ago? Are you new to gaming in general? (I don't mean this is a bad way, just curious)

If you grew up with traditional fighters like Street Fighter, MOrtal Kombat etc. you may not like Smash. I know I don't, it's just a bit too crazy/messy/hectic for my liking.

For me the the best thing about MK8 is how easy it is to pick up and play for the "non experienced" crowd, while also being challenging.

My wife does not play games, but when we do play MK8 there have been plenty of times where she beat me.

Also, you can pick it up, do a few races and put it down, doesn't require a huge time investment.

the best thing about MK8 is that it came with a free copy of windwaker when it launched.

It's still the best mario kart in the series but it's also just a new mario kart game. They're fine.

Smash is a party game that's dumb fun(in the good way) and has some nintendo dudes in it.

Both are above average MP experiences. There is a lot you can do Single Player, but it's not as fun as playing local with friends.

Accessibility and nostalgia. These games are easy to play for casuals and Smash in particular has pretty good depth for the core gamer, too.

If I have friends over, they wouldn't enjoy multiplayer GT5 with me. But we'd have a blast with Mario Kart 8.

I sort of find it weird you've never heard of smash. Especially being signed up on a gaming forum but ok.

They're a lot fun especially with a group of friends. Since they both now have online they're longevity should last for years.

Go try out Brawl.

I own a cube,wii,ds and 3ds as well.

Smash Brothers Melee has like a 50% attach rate with the cube (probably a little inflated with Wii Users buying the game but still damn close). It was the best selling game on the system by some margin. The Wii Version of Smash sold over 12 million units too. I'm kind of shocked.

MK8 does not have good single player. Stay away from that if that's the only way you play.

Smash will probably hold it's own in SP though. They're both very solid, lovingly crafted games that also tend to focus on multiplayer.

Smash is just fun, during the match anything can happen and it's hilarious... then if you want you have the deep fighting game mechanics to learn.

Mario Kart is just one of the few high quality kart racer these days so... there's that.

Honestly, and I don't mean this to sound sarcastic, what games did you buy a Wii U for? Nintendo's pipeline is so empty it seems crazy to me that a Wii U owner would be unaware and unfamiliar with these games.

Actually no. I critique any game I have played, whatever company they come from. So stop accusing a community of such a silly accusation. I said I'm not a Smash fan and MK is boring in singleplayer and you conveniently skimmed past that part. So perhaps you should read more closely as well.

Both games are fun as hell when playing with friends. They are great multiplayer games. Smash offers a bit more in single player than Mario Kart. Surprising you haven't heard of Smash before.

Hes not alone, smash on 3ds is my first smash. MK8 on wiiu was my first MK. The only other Nintedo systems I owned were the original Gameboy and a GC for like a week.(console sucked bigtime)

The main reasons I bought one are WWHD(WW is one of my favorite games of all times) and DKCTF.
But there are also NSMBU,SM3DW,pikmin 3 and W101.

The salt is real.

They're just incredibly fun games with friends. Plus that 60fps magic.

I cant believe someone who had owned that many nintendo consoles could have possibly never played any Mario Kart games....... Smash maybe but Mario Kart? I'm shocked....... does the OP live in space, only to have stumbled upon a nintendo console floating around every 6 years?
