Famitsu interview with Tabata details Final Fantasy XV's battle system and more

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So it's like FFXII's battle system with tweaks?

The action definitely sounds very much automated now though. You customize stuff beforehand, and in combat you basically pick between holding down defend or holding down attack, or picking other more active moves like warping or casting magic. Even combination attacks with other party members are triggered by context.
This sounds like going backwards.

Basically they've kept the chain, teleport and magic. Removed switch to menu as part of customisation, and this effectively removes one hit presses. I will wait until the demo next year, but this sounds like they dumbed it down. They had to have kept one hit presses at least. Switch missing won't be as bad then. It will play similarly.

Weather will have an effect on battles, similar to how it worked in FF Type-0. If it is sunny, casting Fire magic on a monster will ignite the surroundings.

Also, it seems like very few people have played FF Type-0 and have jumped to conclusions. I view FF Type-0's control scheme as being pretty good.

I don't believe that's the entire case. If you think about it, nothing stops you from pressing the attack button manually and rapidly (button mashing) based on each attack animation, and it should produce the same result as holding it. Meaning the system can be automated if you please, or be completely manual to achieve the same result.

That sounds awful. All my hype :( .

Wait, unless my math is wrong(and I'm sleepy), 15 hours for the Adamantoise fight? D:

Btw, wasn't there a lot of automation in FFXII with the Gambit system? I never really played it, but that's the impression I got. People consider that to be one of the best FF entries to date.

Again I will say, the more I learn about this game, the less interested I become.

Why would you remove party member switching and make the game automated?

People talk shit about FFXIII but guess what ? From the looks of it will have a better battle system.

At least you had 6 characters to switch to and you could enter every command manually and have realtime control of what's going on.

Not just setup stuff and let it play it self.

I would have been fine with waiting until 2017 to get this game if the final product had everything we appeared to be promised from the Versus and E3 2013 trailers.

For those who thought it would be like FF Type-0, Tabata says it is a simplified version of it: http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/000/928/928259/

Battle system is essentially press A for Awesome. Awesome being what you have pre-selected in the configuration menu. =P

Yeah he straight out says in that interview that the control scheme of XV is a simplified version of Type-0's controls. He goes on to detail that for combination attacks with party members, they are triggered depending on what weapons and abilities are equipped, so players can try different combinations of weapons and abilities to see what sort of special attacks trigger with party members.

Contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual contextual. This keeps popping up everywhere. I guess Tabata's method of making the sort of action Nomura envisioned for the battle in the game work in a way which won't confuse players is to just script everything and let players pick what sort of AWESOME they want to do in the menu, and then just hold buttons down strategically while moving around, and dong contextual actions.

That description of the battle system does not instill in me any confidence at all.

Context-sensitive weapon selection and character-combination attacks?...

Ugh I hope it isn't as simple as that..

To get a pseudo-cinematic feeling with people flipping around doing cool stuff is much harder to program in real-time.

At one point I jokingly thought "what's next, they are gonna make a Jrpg with Bayonetta battle system?". It would be heaven compared to what we seemingly have now.

It seems like FFXII system. If I can control Cor Leonis, I'm ok with this.

Unless it's like Assassins Creed and Batman games. Then I hate it.

I kind of wish they went back to ATB...I think an ATB system that allowed movement during the recharge time, to pick strategic locations or put characters close together for combo-ing would have been awesome. All this real time automation stuff that the last few games have had is just kind of lame at this point

kotaku interview

While Square Enix hasn't gone into great detail about how combat explicitly works, the way Tabata described it certainly sounded interesting. "The controls aren't you simply press a button once for a single action to happen," said Tabata. "Rather, they are a continuous flow of movements. It's more about the movements that are associated with the buttons and building upon them for actions through the combat system."

yeah seems like commands will just be queued like a mmo system or something.

confused about defensive movement. I assume there will be some sort of stamina or something, or you can just evade every attack?

I think we're getting so many videos/interviews/analysis from insiders that is all getting waaaaay too confusing.
Until i'll play it by myself in the demo, i won't understand how it really works.

He said this as a joke. There is a "laugh" symbol next to the sentence.

Yeah I think obviously there'll be a better way to do it, but joking about it in this way probably means they've designed it so if you try to brute force it, it'll take forever. It was the same in FFXIII!

The combat sounds terrible.

Hopefully the actual execution is better than the description cause it's pretty disappointing.

This is all speculation by me, but watching the demo and trailer it looks like your weapon quickly disappears right after ending an attack. So my guess is, your weapon only stays if you keep holding the attack button and if you let go the weapon will disappear. If that's true, you wouldn't be able to button mash at a good speed since your weapon would basically disappear every time you let go.

Yuji Abe will have the have last laugh.

LR may have had a garbage story but the battle system sure sounds superior so far compared toXV.

This game was meant to be something like that before. An RPG with a battle system like Bayonetta, albeit a bit more simplified if it was going to be like KH.

Going around and doing cool things is easy to pull off in all kinds of other games, doesn't mean that it has to be automated though.

While I agree that the sound of an "automated" battle system sounds a bit worrisome, I feel like I'm one of the few that wouldn't want a Kingdom Hearts style action game out of a mainline Final Fantasy game either, like what Versus XIII seemed to be aiming for. I would like to see a more specific demonstration on these systems he's mentioning before I pass judgement.

The info in this thread is seriously making me sad/angry

Goddamn I hope the demo proves me wrong. But right now, it doesn't feel like it...

................................well fuck.

Tabata, you are losing everyone. Everything sounded so good, from the world, setting, visual, music, but now the combat system is something I must try hands-on in demo before knowing I like it or not.

Fuck all of you.

I also really missed slower paced Final Fantasy games. FFXIII penalizes the player rating wise for changing the speed to be slower. Lightning Returns seems to have a fantastic combat system based on the demo I played a while ago.

You set weapons on the deck in the menu, and during combat the most appropriate weapon in the deck will be used based on the situation.
... Automatically?

The weapon system description plus the defensive button is inspiring me with caution rather than confidence. But I'm not jumping the gun yet.

Any more information on how streamlined both are yet?

But we will be able to control any party member, right? right?

Only Noctis
"You don't select from a list of commands. In battle, you switch from offense to defense and vice versa. The only character that the player is in direct control of is Noctis. However, the other characters will act according to tactics that the player set beforehand. Of course, there will be a screen with settings that you can use to control the entire party to attack or switch o various weapons."

Not going to lie...this doesn't sound all that fun nor does it sound like the game I thought it was.

actually has me looking forward to KH3 more now..

I'll reserve judgement until the demo of course.

But it sounds like they learned nothing from FFXIII's battle system problems.

Man the reactions to the demo are going to be fucking interesting. If the battle system is highly automated, I hope the game receives a massive backlash so they can change it to the KH-like system we all want.

I'm really tired of automation in FF games. Just give me a full fledged action game with TOTAL CONTROL in a huge world for Christ's sake.

Damn, and after I was so excited about the tech demo they revealed. Why did they have to go and do this...? Here's what I took from this.

- No playing other characters as was promised as recently as E3 2013, Noctis is it. Forget everything you knew about the other characters having unique abilities you can utilize, forget about on-the-fly switching.

- No female party members. I don't think the game needed a female party member, but that doesn't mean I can't be bummed about this. I'd have very much liked one.

- Lack of diverse options in combat. You can't switch your own weapons, you don't choose which combo attacks to make with your party, there is no menu ala KH to fit in a variety of options. I'm starting to wonder if you'll just have one magic spell at a time equipped. Why would they dumb the game down to this degree? Oversimplification is anathema to a good RPG.

Immensely disheartening. I'll wait to see it in motion before I judge, but for me that's three dealbreakers in a row. This game is still day one for me, but I'll be damned if this doesn't sound dire as hell.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
The game will be gorgeous to look at though!

Let's be positive people ;.;

I'll reserve my judgement for when the demo arrives.
