I think the overall issue isn't that it is offensive and people are outwardly offended but but that this is the sort of subtle sexism that creates an air of hostility for women in STEM fields. Typically work dress code is enforced for this reason. Anyway, absolutely he should be called out for it and he should apologize so that he understands.

Goddamn people need to lighten up. Why can't he express some zaniness? His shirt is fun in that subversively over-the-top way.

I really, really wish he hadn't apologized.

The shirt is ugly as hell but The Verge's article title is fucking stupid. It's just a fucking shirt.

"I don't care if you landed a spacecraft on a comet, your shirt is sexist and ostracizing"

Oh my god. Are they serious? Is this where we're at now? Depiction of the female form in any degree of erotisized or sexualized manner = Sexism ?

gitman does these much better imo

He had too, otherwise he would be hounded to the end of his days. They bully till they get what they want.

Man, I'm kinda oissed he had to apologize for that. Shirt was amazingly weird and I commended him for having the balls to wear it.

Exactly.

The shirt's so absurd it's hilarious. His detractors are overreacting something fierce.

Let the man have his shirt. For what the team accomplished, he's earned that shirt. Fuck The Verge.

The ESA should paint their next high-profile mission's craft with this 'Shirtstorm' pattern, just dozens upon dozens of speedo-hunks and latex-ladies like an 'upgraded' version of the Pioneer Plaque.

But one of the things people like about tech and science jobs is that the culture (including dress code) is very lax. So while enforcing dress code for, say, things that are broadcast live for a wide audience makes sense, if the dude wanted to wear that shirt on a normal work day I feel like he should be able to without it being taken as a slight against the entire female population.

The Verge has reached out to the ESA, but has yet to hear back.

I really fucking hope the ESA doesn't waste the time contacting the fucking Verge... the ESA has shit that is a LOT more important to do

I could totally see the dude being completely oblivious. Like he's not giving a shit about what he's wearing as he's so caught up in his project, so he just takes the next thing in the wardrobe.

Like yes, it's a tacky, stupid shirt that has no place in his occupation, but people are reaaally reaching if they think he was making a statement about "NO WIMMENZ ALLOWED!".

No one deservs death threats for criticizing him, but making assumptions about his personality over a shirt is really sad.

bollox, it's a fun shirt that probably fits his personality.

It's such an over-the-top art style I don't see how anyone could take offence at it.

His friend will at least have a new business venture out of it anyway.

You think it will stop now that he apologized?

It will die down. Some of the Hardcore will still go at it, but they don't have a leg to stand on anymore since he backed down so quickly. They like to bully, but they don't like looking like the bully.

It would have blown over in a day or two regardless, like this stuff always does. Why people feel they need to apologize for doing nothing wrong is forever beyond me.

There's a shitstorm for everything. I'm thinking about crawling into a pub and waiting for natural selection to kill of political correctness.

With any luck I'll emerge myself able to metabolize alcohol directly into energy, and will tell tales of the years yonder when the internet played out like mad max.

You know when a really cool event happens and you're all positive after it, then go on the internet and see a shitstorm about something that seems overblown? This is like that.

That Verge article is ridiculous.

Yes, there's an air of women feeling unwelcome in the STEM field, but according to analysis from recent years "academic science isn't sexist" where job opportunities, promotions, and workplace are not biased and are actually more equal but just less women are in the field because of early social pressures back in school or lack of exposure to these fields.

Eh maybe, I agree he shouldn't have done it, but I can see WHY he did it. I would even if I didn't mean it, just to call off the dogs.

Glad to see he had the courage to apologize and recognize his mistake. It's slow progress towards making STEM more friendly towards women.

People need to get a grip and stop moaning about everything. Poor guy. Shouldn't have had to apologize for doing nothing wrong.

Man, I wouldn't wear that shirt if you paid me. Wish Gitman still had this available, way nicer and classy.

It's fine not to have dress codes, but then it's on the individual to know to appropriately dress oneself, which he failed at. The problem with the shirt is that it is demeaning, it's not just construed that way. It was very purposely made because "ass and titties, fuck yeah!" The argument then becomes, "well he didn't intend to make anyone uncomfortable" in which the appropriate solution is he should have it brought to his attention then like a small child who doesn't know any better made to apologize.

The Article said:
These are the women who forged on despite the fact that they were told by elementary school classmates and the media at large that girls who like science are nerdy and unattractive. This is the climate women who dream of working at NASA or the ESA come up against, every single day. This shirt is representative of all of that, and the ESA has yet to issue a statement or apologize for that.
This article can't be serious, lol. I know it is, but this is so overblown.

That's fine but it only propagates the appearance that STEM fields are boys clubs. While amusing, this shirt wouldn't be acceptable in any other work environment.

it doesn't propagate anything unless he or its creator says it does. you're projecting.

I'm not entirely sure why, it's a shirt.

Worn by someone in a field where women struggle to be taken as seriously as men. It's not as big a fiasco as people are making it out to be, but it still sends a bad message.

Custom Made by a WOMAN too.

Some of my best friends are vagina people.

it doesn't propagate anything unless he or its creator says it does. you're projecting.

What a silly statement.

It's like you're on the comet's side.

Agreed. Boneheaded decision to wear that.

In all seriousness, I'm more than a little concerned that people are throwing around value judgements of the person based on that shirt. If we never saw him in that shirt that day but he wears it on his personal days is he still a terrible sexist misogynist? Do we distill and define people based on what they wear?

As I said in the original comet thread where this popped up in, people just find a way to create drama and get offended by something. This time it was shirt, hopefully this blows over, so we can forget how dumb this "uproar" was. There are more important things to think about concerning the comet.

I posted this in the gamergate thread:

I actually came across this shirt some time ago, looking for Hawaiian shirts (did you know you can get them in long sleeves?!). https://www.alohaland.com/pinup-girls-guys/new-gunner-girls I'm not sure she "designed" anything. There are several shirts with that "space vixens" theme, and "the original shirt in question" is here: https://www.alohaland.com/pinup-girls-guys/coco-pinups-deluxe. That may be a fabric pattern available anywhere, though. Maybe his friend sewed his shirt by hand?

Very poor choice of shirt to wear to work, particularly if you are going to be on camera. If I saw it at a barbecue I don't think I'd immediately label the wearer as misogynist, though.

You can get beefcake ones, too.

This, basically. Like, he shouldn't lose his head or anything but I'm fine with him catching flak for it.
