I feel like slide is the most useless ability out of all of them. I have never had the need to use slide, ever. Not even once in combat have I actually used it. If they had to remove an ability, slide literally has no use. One of my friends didn't even know it existed until I told him, and he's onyx. Yeah.

Between all the new gimmicks and the Breakout gametype I just can't find any excitement to play this game anymore. I tried. I literally bought the XB1 for the MCC and the Halo 5 Beta (only got it for Christmas because timing of the Beta).

As of now it looks like I'll be skipping Halo 5. It will be the first Halo game I haven't bought on launch day since Halo 2 (was living in China during launch and couldn't get a bootleg in my city).

First : Kill cams should be an opt-IN on death. When you die, pressing X should show you the kill cam. Having it on by default is annoying and can be very disorienting (especially when it's a grenade that killed you).

Second : Removal of ADS would go a long way toward convincing me otherwise, but I don't really see that ever happening at this stage of the game. Other than the glaring graphical issue with ADS (and the fact that it was never portrayed that way in any other Halo game ever) here are my concerns with the mechanic as it exists in the Beta.

1. ADS is a necessity when using automatic weapons. It modifies their accuracy (and effective range). Coupled with their headshot bonus damage a SMG or AR can shred you quickly. Add to this the de-scope factor and it becomes almost essential to play with the new default controls (putting zoom on the left trigger). Trying to right click to activate ADS on a continual basis becomes laborious and frustrating in a firefight if you attempt to use standard Halo controls (where zoom is on the right stick). The right click to zoom (with an AR or SMG) becomes even more cumbersome as you're using all your functions like thruster and sprint.

2. ADS has a slower animation than traditional scopes in Halo.

3. In past Halo games I never felt like I was being punished for not scoping in for all firefights. In certain situations (pinging snipers across larger maps, or fighting down long corridors) using zoom was advantageous - but it never felt necessary. To me Halo 5 feels built around this new mechanic and, as such, it feels like I'm being punished by not using it all the time. (To be fair, the same argument could be used for Clamber, Sprint, and Thruster - you can choose not to use them, but you're putting yourself at a distinct disadvantage).

4. The DMR scope is a joke. The BR scope should return to what it's been for 3+ games (I personally can't stand the red dot sight).

-----

tl;dr I'm a sucker for Halo - so I might get Halo 5 at some point. But with ADS and Kill Cams it doesn't feel like Halo to me.

Long time lurker, very sporadic poster.

I really enjoy the beta, at the moment. I was pretty scared when the ADS stuff first appeared, but on playing it, I feel like it's not that much of an issue for me, in that it's almost entirely cosmetic for precision weapons. That said, I wonder why we need it at all then, but I can live with it. Substantively it is different to other shooters in this respect, so other than the cosmetic stuff I'm not sure what the issue is. Auto-weapons having reduced spread is certainly a step towards other shooters, but I actually quite like it: de-scoping pushes that back, and it means the autos are competitive, although I'll always want a BR (even though it needs a better 3-burst sound!).

As for the abilities, slide is the only one I have never used in a fight. That's not to say it's (forever) useless, but I've not really ever thought about it. I like the abilities. Halo for me is about equal footing, weapon pickups and the sandbox, and with these, 343 seem to have brought the game back closer to what I want - or at least, evolved it in a way that isn't immediately alienating. It's clear everyone here loves Halo, but what Halo is for one person is often a little different to someone else. Would I rather sprint were gone? Probably. But the game still feels like Halo to me, it still feels terrific, open, exciting, skillful, balanced (largely - needs tweaks, obvs). I believe crouch jumping is returning also, correct? Good, if so.

Maps feel good, although I'm not sure on Regret in terms of feel and flow - I might need to play it more. I prefer Eden to Empire, spotting blues aside. They feel big, but then the increased mobility makes up for it.

As for the radar, I see why people dislike it, but I have to say I've not noticed any agonisingly slow games with it on, and I have to say I've not really felt Halo was 'slow' before because of it. Yeah, you get cat-and-mouse moments, and they can be fun or infuriating - but so can being shot in the back with no idea the guy was there. Removal of height markers might well help, or perhaps them changing it to a Destiny(nowTHATisaMPshootergonewrongvisavisHalo)-style tracker (I liked that), but for me the thing is this: a skilful player, if placed in the same sandbox as another, less-skilful player, all things being equal, will still win 9 times out of 10 (the other 1 time being the damn grenade exploding in hand, or the lesser player pulling out all the stops). Teams exacerbate that. The radar is a crutch at points, and at others it's utterly irrelevant to the equation at hand (e.g. when you're being obliterated, you will be, radar or no). All things considered, I like it. Same for the sprint + thruster = escape situation - I wish it worked as well as people seem to make out! Maybe I just suck.

Reversal medal = the best medal. Absolutely nails what Halo is about for me.

Anyway, glad there's lots of discussion going on. Can't say I agree with a lot of the doom and gloom, although there are things I'd like changed - I am having a blast with it.

Edit:
2. ADS has a slower animation than traditional scopes in Halo.

I've seen this said a lot. Has anyone timed it? To me the difference is minimal. I've not set up H2A (say) alongside H5 to actually test it.

Edit 2: I just checked my post history. My last post was saying how much I was enjoying H4 MP. Christ. Ignore me, for I have sinned. (Take away the perks/Infinity though and it was alright)

I am loving Halo 5 at the moment. Feels great to play. Haven't been able to say that about Halo for a LONG time.

Shall I do a HaloGAF Halo 5 Beta Montage?

Is anyone doing one? Would people want one to be made?

If you do one can we submit our own clips?

Yeah - If people submit all their clips to me via Xboxclips.com, I can grab the files and stitch something fun together.

Need to get back into montage making anyway. As this community is pretty huge, I could do a skills/goofs montage. 2 songs, about 8 minutes long would do I figure.

People interested?

Hey guys,
I've made up a survey regarding Halo 5 and a few hot topics that have been discussed since the Halo 5 Beta has gone up. Would be great to get as many reposes as possible. Link to survey is below. Will post results in a day or 2.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/10fjcRMCNlruk4JH0u7D0SBgvw_Cp4O1xc8b4uybyhFw/viewform

You might want to use a checklist system if possible for the big queries like "which SAs are your favorite" and "which do you want to remove."

By the way, I haven't really heard real military ranks being used in progressional unlocks being a major complaint, but maybe that's a thing over at Waypoint. As far as Bro Banter, I feel like "Picked up a DMR" isn't a great example of a "non-helpful" callout considering it lets you know what's up and what isn't. I think something like "you're a machine, keep it up" or "clean kill" would be a way better example.

I'm back to loving Breakout.

Last game was a tie, 1v1. Guy was camping on their BR tower. I snuck behind him, assassination animation to win the game. So good!

Yeah, I imagine the gamemode would be pretty hype in a tournament setting. Needs an objective and better maps though.

Breakout 1v2 What does the announcer say when I kill that second guy?

ywJj5pJ.png

Bifecta, I think. You got a medal for that. I have no idea what it is for though.

Speaking of clips, here's an overkill extermination of mine that shows why BR spawns are so important. Without them, you can just dominate AR kids before they can touch you. Click for high quality.

Oh yeah, new medal spotted last night - Extinction is rewarded for a single player killing all four members of the enemy team in Breakout. Different from an Extermination.

Trifecta is also definitely for killing three of the enemy players in Breakout. The reason it's not showing up in all cases is because it has to be three kills one after the other, though. Not in the multikill sense - if someone interrupts your three kills, it won't count. So for example:

Teammate killed Spartan 1
You killed Spartan 2
You killed Spartan 3
You killed Spartan 4

Would net you a Trifecta. But...

You killed Spartan 1
You killed Spartan 2
Teammate killed Spartan 3
You killed Spartan 3

Wouldn't earn you one.

I heard the announcer say "Immortal" after I finished a game of Breakout with double digit kills and no deaths. Never saw a medal, but heard it as the game was ending. Dunno if anyone knew about that one already.

I'm having less and less fun with this beta the more I play it. Pretty much done with it at this point

I dunno if it's just because a lot of people are playing in parties and stuff right now (is there even a way to tell?) but I'm just getting donged on. Constantly. Yet a week ago I was doing fine. I have no idea what has changed /shrugs.

Game is fun but if this beta is any indication I just don't like these competitive modes in Halo any more. Especially when playing alone like I do a fair amount.

It would be cool if they added a playlist in the final game similar to the Mercenary playlists in the COD games. Pretty much, no one can go into the playlist with a party.

With the push in the competitive direction, I can't see that happening. I would expect unranked playlists though, which will prob be the best alternative.

I am exactly the same. I still blame BR starts though, game was so much more fun when you had to use every weapon. It's extra punishing for solo players with BR starts as well because you can get pinged from pretty much any direction all the time making movement a lot harder.

You're gonna fuck around and have a halo game launch in 2015 with AR starts. Please stop.

I completely forgot about slide. I don't even know how to do it let alone ever use it.

Playing this game is a blast and I never use abilities outside thrusters. I'd be happy for them to remove all the fluff and just add thrusters to Halo movement.

Yup, and it'll be glorious.

Anybody see the forge maps for us to vote on? Pegasus and orion? First thing on ign they look pretty nice to me

http://m.ign.com/articles/2015/01/05/halo-5-guardians-pegasus-and-orion-maps-revealed-ign-first

I saw this just as I noticed NeoGAF was down. They look kinda bland, hopefully that's beta stuff though.

What? Atleast with BR starts you can ping them back. With AR starts you were a sitting duck.
Getting pinned down occasionally happened but no where near as often as with BR starts. I've had multiple moments since BR starts were implemented where I just couldn't move or I'd get pinged by 2 different people from two different directions. It's really frustrating how limiting it is on map movement.

It also limits the usage of the sandbox, I'd rather have AR starts and use the entire sandbox of weapons than BR starts and occasionally use an SMG or DMR.

Well you are the demographic that 343 wants to appeal to.

They might as well indulge you completely and shit the bed entirely with AR starts at this stage.

I'd blame the maps, not BR starts (getting pinned down happens less often with BR starts in my experience). If you lost map control completely with AR starts there was almost no way to get it back. Regardless of the starting weapons the team with map control has precision weapons. With AR starts you couldn't challenge them if you didn't search for a precision weapon first. And even if you found a precision weapon your teammates might not have one so they couldn't really help you. I agree on the sandbox part though.

AR/Pistol starts will be fine if they slightly improve the Pistol. I think it could be exciting and dynamic. As is, though? Nah.

I think I've got the perfect meme for halo medals, but I need your help gaf in finding the best quality halo medals I could use to shop them please. Much appreciated.

Flat, untextured, grey models?

While cool and I can see why, I hope there's more, or we can at least change the colors.

Exactly! I mean, I'm a minimalist dude, but my intent here isn't "strip art design of everything Halo holds dear." It's more that there are a bunch of inherent advantages for both visual identity and gameplay with minimalist pieces. Couple of major examples:

-(hopefully) this means that models are lined up with actual textures, meaning that it'll be way more obvious what's part of the map and what isn't. Less chances to get grenades stuck under curved-edge shipping containers on Foundry, etc.

-Colors can still be changed and colors look to have a more substantial presence on map pieces, as seen in the Pegasus map overlook on that big cylindrical piece.

-White or muted grey mean objects can simply be a product of their environment, e.g. orion having a nice warm look to it because the sunset's hitting all the pieces right.

-Adding to the above, white or beige pieces will reflect light way more easily than any other type of forge structure, as shown with the bulk of Orion's pieces being bathed in a nice shade of orange due to a sunset. Dynamic lighting pieces, such as lights that can be placed by the player, will now have a more substantial reach.

-It's going to be a long, long time before pieces that minimalist end up aging or looking "out of date." Something with as visually busy Forge textures like Reach isn't going to have that luxury.

EDIT: Forgot a very important one. The less visually busy these pieces are, the less performance they'll eat up. Maps will probably flow a lot better and not having to load any substantial texturing means that pop-in on structures shouldn't be a major problem.

Did you also notice how it actually looks like one, complete map with almost no interruptions in geometry and texture? The flow of it is amazing. It looks like a professionally made map.

Sure the grey might be a little too "white", but it looks infinitely better than the thrown together pieces of 300-400 squares we got in H3+H4+H2A.

So far I'm excited, but from what Josh said on the interview on IGN, doesn't seem like Forge is going to be as big as I wanted it to be in Halo 5. I was hoping for some more ambitious things (terrain editor, weather, ToD, etc).

Four halo games has taught us otherwise.

If we get AR starts in Halo 5 there's no fucking hope. Waypoint idiots will have ruined what could be a fun kinda haloish game.

See below: that's what happens with AR starts. They're still a bad idea and bad for balance. You can't defend yourself at range, so you're pretty screwed if the other team has a range weapon. Truth becomes a joke - one team controls a base, top mid, and P2 with BRs, and then just sits there and dongs on ARs all day long.

Dare I ask about any updates for the MCC?
Update:

its broke as hell yo

Nvm, I'm dumb.

Ranks? Unless Tinfoil is iron and Iron is actually bronze...

Tinfoil is bronze, lol.

Clamber is a poor man's crouch jump.

Clamber is covering distances even the best crouch jumps couldn't obtain, though. For the sake of the survey it's listed that way because clamber has you outright circumnavigating over ledges and stuff, while crouch jumping can't really offer that - at least not on the same level.

Alright, submitted the survey.

With that, does anybody want to play the beta
or sacred icon, regret, gravemind, and high chairty on legendary
?

lmao, I'm going over the statistics on the survey so far and "why is my Spartan pink?" has a 100% check rate.

EDIT: more fun facts:

Thrusters have a 100% approval rating.

Nobody outright hates the opening informational pancam on match startup (the "control power weapons to dominate the enemy team!" moment), and there's virtually no outcry or push for returning it to the lobby.

Votes are an even 50/50 on whether or not players think there are too many buttons to map to individual abilities.

There's also nobody pushing for more changes being made to Sprint - players either want it in, or want it out.

Ah okay.

That's something I've noticed as well actually. The sheer distance you can travel with a single jump is pretty crazy, combine sprint jumps with thrusters and clamber and you can cross half the map.

What do I pick for H5 control scheme if I'm using "Halo 4"?

I picked classic.

By the way, after that one survey that got posted here earlier, I decided to make my own.

Halo 5: Guardians Arena Beta Survey

It doesn't cover absolutely everything, but there should be enough preferential options that not a whole lot of people's viewpoints are left out.

What do I pick for H5 control scheme if I'm using "Halo 4"?

EDIT: Also, i think SFX are fine, but shield recharge should go back to the iconic hum
