Maria the Virgin Witch-1

I guess I liked this but I have no clue what they're going to make a series out of. Right now, I have no clue about the plot direction. I can also see the virgin/sex jokes getting old too.

Digimon Series Review - Adventure, Zero Two, Tamers, Frontier, Savers, Xros Wars

So with the recent (at the time) news that there was going to be a new Digimon season, one that followed the Adventure storyline, I decided that it was a good time to actually watch all of Digimon. I had previously seen Savers in it's entirety (and it was a long time ago, so I don't remember much) and isolated episodes of Adventure and Frontier when I was a kid, so it's my first time actually watching the series. I'm watching this with subs. I don't really like any kind of dub and this is not an exception; I've been tainted by the awful Brazilian dubs I watched season 1 and 4 with. So names and stuff are going to be that of the Japanese version. I'm going to try, for the first time as well, make a in depth text, even though I'm writing this as I'm close to finish seeing everything. I also watched the movies but wrote little of them and couldn't fit them in the post. I watched the seasons in order as well but had to put in this order to fit it into 2 posts.

Also, spoilers, duh.

Digimon Adventure Zero Two

This was a disappointment.

Right away I didn't like the characters. Daisuke was "Taichi the Second", Miyako was super annoying, and while Iori looked like he was going to be this season's Koushirou, he was really bland (and this is what something that was joked about on one of the movies). I thought, "they will improve after some character development", but sadly this never happened. Iori got some development with his grandpa and, at the end, his mother, but he didn't improve that much. To me he was still rather bland. Now, about the original cast, I like what was done with Takeru and sometimes Hikari (sometimes she is a little off, though I can't put my finger on exactly why), and I don't really see why the rest of the cast is there. Is nice to see them and all, but they never really do anything. Sometimes they come to the detriment of the original characters, as they lose the change to learn something on their own. Also, one thing I miss here, is their relationship with the parents. It was a pretty big part of Adventure, and is completely missing here, except for Ken and Iori. Takeru's mom and dad also make a appearance, but don't really do anything major or important. So with a set of bad characters, it starts.

I have to be honest, I don't really like the whole Digimental thing. I would be okay if it added some armor or other improvements (like Tamers did with the cards) to the current evolution. But having it an armor evolution kinda suck especially because it's really inconsistent on how strong it is. It was supposed to be Seijukuki level (or so I believe it was), but they lose to some basic Seijukuki Digimon, and later win against some Kanzentai level if I'm not mistaken. I remember they winning against some tough Digimon they shouldn't win at that level, but I'm not sure they were really Kanzentai. In my opinion they're pretty useless (if wasn't for the plot excuse of the Dark Towers) and result in some ugly ass Digimon (Nerfetimon and Pegasusmon are awful, but Subarimon get the prize for second worst Digimon in this season). But okay it's different and different doesn't mean they're bad. Moving on.

Initially I thought the Digimon Kaiser arc was a interesting one, but sadly it was way, way too long. By the middle of the arc I was getting tired and bored. There was a lot of pointless and useless episodes. They go to the digital world, destroy some towers, Ken build some more. Repeat a bunch of times. The characters doesn't grow, there's barely any progress (the only thing is they find their second Digimentals). This goes on to almost half the season. The end of the arc was really interesting though. The interaction between Ken and Takeru was great and Magnamon was surprisingly nice (thought overpowered; wasn't he supposed to be a Seijukuki?), but sadly that Digimental ended up disappearing (I thought it was going to Ken, and they would find a new use for the Digimentals, but that didn't happen). In the transition between arcs we have the best episode of the entire season, focusing on Ken's development in it's entirety. It's basically all the character development we got in the season. After that the craziness begins.

They juggle a lot a plot points in this second half. There's: Dagomon's Dark Ocean (which, to be honest, started during Kaiser's arc, but shows up again briefly), Arukenimon and Mummymon, BlackWarGreymon, Holy Stones, Jogress Shinka, the 4 Digimon gods, Demon and the Demon Corps, the "kids all over the world have Digimon now" filler mini arc, the Dark Spores (which came out of nowhere), Oikawa and lastly, BelialVandemon (Vandemon for the fucking third time in the series). And most of them don't really go anywhere and are not finished. Everything is just a mess. Dark Ocean would've been great, but doesn't happen. While Arukenimon and Mummymon are interesting antagonists, they've basically became Digimon's Team Rock duo. They're never treated seriously, and get their ass kicked all the time, so I don't really know how they've managed to be a thing up to the end. BlackWarGreymon was really annoying. It tried to be deep and philosophical, but that was extremely out of place with the rest of the season. The Holy Stones were awful because it was the same fucking thing as the seek and destroy the Dark Towers of earlier in the season, but this time it was seek and protect instead, something they could never do.

Ah Jogress Shinka (also known as DNA Evolution IIRC). It's a really good concept, that we end up seeing other times in other seasons as well. Sadly it was never explained well and while it could've been used as a tool for some development, what happened was bad pairings and status quo. Daisuke don't, and can't, really understand Ken. Ken's pair should've been Takeru. Hikari would be better with Iori (Takeru would've been better but he is even better with Ken), and let Daisuke deal with Miyako, so that they could've learn a thing or two and grow as characters. Also, aside from Palidramon, the fusions are awful. With Palidramon, everything fits and make sense, but that's not the case with the others. Silphymon looks like someone just picked pieces from two digimon and stitched them together. Some consistence would be appreciated. And Shakkomon... I don't even know what to say, except that it gets the award of the worse Digimon this season, and maybe the worse of all seasons.

The Digimon gods could've been interesting, but never goes anywhere. They let things get bad and when things get super awful, he gives them a little assist. Demon and his Corp appears out of nowhere, do nothing and leave. Then right when things are serious, "let's go around the world for no good reason". This felt like RPGs where you're right at the climax, but before continuing, you go do some side quests, you know. Kill some wild monsters, gather some items, this kind of stuff. I don't really understand why they introduced the Dark Spores. In relation to Ken, they're basically useless. They already have the moment he goes to the Dark Ocean, so he don't really need another reason to be evil. Other then that, it serves as a plot device, so that the antagonists can have some motivation or something, but there were some other ways to do this. Oikawa was a really interesting villain I if he appeared earlier it would've been better, although having two human villains, while novel in the series, was a little bit too much. And finally, there was no reason to have Vandemon AGAIN. And Daisuke being a hero with emotions was really out of character (something that happened often enough trough the series). But it ended. With a awful epilogue. I won't say much more, but that was really crappy. It was not only unnecessary, but also really have nothing to do with how the characters were portrayed in the two seasons.

Anyway, at least I can say that the OST is decent. I like some songs (especially the evolution ones). I love how the end on Paildramon animation is synced with the music (the TAN TAN tututututututtan tan tan tan). Besides that, I can't really say there's much good on this season.

Digimon Frontier

I liked what I previously saw as a kid, and I used to defend this, since people usually complained about the fusions and stuff. But now, I'm not so sure.

I like that it follows a similar structure to Adventure. The kids go there, to this unknown place and they have to survive. There's an easy way out, but they don't take it. I think they thought of the whole thing as a game, they didn't knew the implications of continuing, and if they did I'm certain they would go back. But oh well. I find that the whole series is some sort of mix between Adventure and Zero Two. They go find their spirits initially, both the humans and beast spirits. This is similar in function to the Devimon arc, as they learn more about how things work, and is also similar how the Digimentals were found on Zero Two, or the Crests in Adventure. After that, they have to face the 5 other legendary warriors in some long ass arc, that is similar do Vandemon's arc; they have to prove their worth. They end by fighting against Cherubimon and then a new plot is introduced, the Royal Knights and Lucemon, which to me felt similar to the Dark Masters of Adventures.

Before going in depth about the plot, let me talk about the characters. I'm not super fond of them, but at least I can say they worked with them, different from Zero Two. Takuya is another Taichi clone. Don't get me wrong, I like Taichi, but it bothers me that aside from Tamers so far, the main characters present the same characteristics. Takuya is stubborn, the leader of the group, kinda laid back (as in "nah, it's okay we will work things out somehow"), and careless when it comes to his actions. Although he gets an entire episode devote to developing his character (though I don't really see why they needed to turn him into a furry), I don't really see that affecting him this much. By the end of the season he is almost the same Takuya from the beginning. A similar thing happens with both Junpei and Izumi, in my opinion. In Junpei's case, I might be a little biased, because I don't really like him. He (and his voice) is annoying, stubborn for the sake of being stubborn and his thing for Izumi was kinda distracting. I can see his problem of not having friends as a thing, but I don't really see how he could've changed by the end, in a manner that that problem would be solved. He certainly stopped being so stubborn, but his actions weren't showing me much change. Same with Izumi. Similar problems, although in her case, I don't really see why it's a problem in the first case, as trough the season she doesn't show the characteristics that were pushing people away in the flashbacks. Anyway, at least I found her to be an entertaining character. Now, Koji and Tomoki really improved. Koji was the typical lone wolf character that don't want anything to do with the stupid group, but he really warms up to them, gradually (which is important, as these things take time), and really start seeing them as friends. Not only that, he has the most tragic background: Divorced parents, his dad lied to him saying his biological mother was dead, he had some problems with calling his step-mother "mom", and later he finds out that he has a brother and his real mom is alive. He deals with this problems trough the season, and thus becomes the most developed character of the group. Koji really is the center of the whole story, as shown by the finale. Speaking of his brother, I don't really have much to say about Koichi. While he provide some interesting plot points, I see his development more as a tool that was used for Koji's development than anything else. About Tomoki, he was, in my opinion, the most real character here. He did really behave like the type of child who would get bullied in the start, but he had to overcome some serious shit, and I really can believe how courageous he became at the end. As for Bokomon and Neemon... I really can't. They're really, really, REALLY bad.

Now for the plot. The beginning is boring. I felt the same boredom I felt in Zero Two when all they did was destroy Dark Towers. And it's kind odd, because here there is progression, as they're finding their spirits and learning about the world. But it's the repetitive nature of these episodes that bore me. And I become really bothered about the fusions as well. I think that the backstory of the legendary warriors is really nice, but here it's kinda bad. The whole thing don't feel like Digimon. I think I would've like it more if they had Digimon partners but instead of evolving they fused. They could've said the Digimons are the legendary warriors reborn form the Digitamas or something. That way the Digimon could also be part of the kids growth. Because it really feels that they've picking tools so that they don't die here. Anyway, they keep on that until they find the 5 other legendary warriors, which look worse than the kids spirits. This arc was interesting at the start, but it started getting a little repetitive and a little too long. Also, here comes another problem with the Spirits: the kids get better at fighting, but that comes out of nowhere. Because all the fights are essentially the same. And they can't say they improved the relationships of the kids with their spirits, since the spirits are not living Digimon at the moment, and neither they can communicate with the kids, so there's not really any reason for them getting better. Also Mercurimon and his beast form was the worst thing I've seen. Forget Shakkumon, Sephirothmon is the worse Digimon that will ever exist.

Anyway, moving along, they fight Cherubimon. Nothing of note there. That IceDevimon thing was super stupid, by the way. And then comes the Royal Knights. I have some major problems with this arc and the things that happen within it. First, it feels like a filler arc, similar to the travel around the world in Zero Two. They just go around seeing some new and old places. This is made more clear with the fact that it's basically the same thing all the time. They try to fight the two guys, they get beaten, they move to another location, repeat. But suddenly, they get strong at the end just because. There's also the kids that appear out of nowhere. I wouldn't have problems with them if they used the kids, but no. You know what I really would like? Angemon, before dying give some of his powers to the four kids and they get the other four spirits, and the spirits change like they did with Koichi to better suit the kids. Then they could've repeat history with the 10 legendary warriors fighting Lucemon. It would've been a nice reason to introduce the new kids. But no, that didn't happen. And they defeat Lucemon a bunch of times, and it ends. There was no reason neither an impact of his 346754th form going to the real world. Speaking of the real world, the Royal Knights motivation to help Lucemon was really off, specially knowing what the Royal Knights really are thanks to Savers.

Overall, this was a pretty mediocre season. The OST sucked really hard, and they got into the "German words are cool" bandwagon really hard. Also, this season has the biggest examples of some of the problems I have with the series as a whole, which I will talk about later. I don't think I would recommend this for anyone.

Digimon Xros Wars (season 1 and 2)

Since they broke it into 3 seasons I'm going to do so with my review as well.

I want to star by saying that I hate, HATE, the designs of pretty much everything here. The characters are either weird or generic as hell. But the Digimon are the worse part. Balistamon and everything that has to do with it (a.k.a all the crosses, or rather, Xroses) looks like some cheap knockoff toy, the other Digimon looks like they came from some bad Pokémon ROM Hack or from other companies attempts to grab some money out of the "collecting monsters" thing. Dorulumon, one of the few designs I "like", looks like something from Monster Rancher (and I like Monster Rancher). Overall, the whole show feels very much like these new generic kids anime/games, like Hero Bank or Gaist Crusher (only talking about the aesthetics, and for some reason they were to fisrt to come to mind, even tough I never saw much of them). And I really, really, REALLY hate the redesigns. Graymon, MetalGreymon, Cyberdramon and Beelzbumon all look ridiculous. Also, might as well get that out of the way, the OST sucks hard.

About the characters, I don't like them too much. Taiki is very Taichi like. The exception here is that his "optimism" and carelessness comes from the fact he wants to help everybody. And that's pretty much his character. He has some nice and smart moments, but that's pretty much it. He has no background, no development. He is just a force driving things forward. His friends Akari and Zenjirou are like this as well. Akari existence has absolutely no purpose. She does nothing, she don't influence the plot. She is just there. Zenjirou is a Brock shitty clone. Everything he does is either acting out of "love" or being a comic relief. And he's also good with swords, which makes he at least a little more useful then Akari. They also have no background and zero development. To be fair, the anime talks about this as well, but does nothing with it. Now, I really like Nene. She has a background, a motive to do what she does. She also receives some little development, which is the most someone got in this. Kiriha is interesting as well. He has a personality (though a very generic one at that) that's very prominent. I find that sometimes his actions are a little off from his personality, and that's pretty apparent due to how in your face his personality is. He appears to have a background as well but all that's shown is one single flashback of he holding a picture frame. He also receives no development.

As for the story in this first part, I'm certainly disappointed. I really, really loved the concept of the war, Taiki being the general and the whole zone control thing. It could've been exploited really well, but that was not what happened. What we got here was 30 episodes of the same thing over and over again. Every episode was go to the zone, fight, get the Code Crown, move to the next zone, repeat. Sometimes we got some plot points like the introduction of the 3 generals of the Bagura army, Nene and Kirihara's introduction, Cutemon and his parents, the DigiMemories, DarkKnightmon, "dame dame"mon, and some other things I might be forgetting. This setup was really, really boring, even though they had some great moments in them. It's the Digimon Kaiser arc all over again. And what really bothers me is that most of those plot points I listed go nowhere. I really have to question why they separated it in two parts, as as a stand alone, this first part is really, really mediocre at best. The last two episodes especially, they're really bad. In episode 29 we see Taticmon being defeated and surprise surprise DarkKnightmon is the brother of the leader of Bagura army (whose name I completely forgot) and surprise surprise, a giant tornado comes, a SkullGreymon (at least that's what it looked like) hand grabs the Code Crowns and suck 4 out of, what, 25 other people/Digimon who were there. And then episode 30, in which they go to the real world and surprise surprise, time barely has passed. Then for some reason Taticmon is there and Omegamon, and stuff. The good decision here was leaving Akari and Zenjirou behind. Barely an ending. To me it would've been better if it ended at the part where the zones get "assigned" to the armies. Then they could've said "Now shit gets real, lets prepare", because a real war (like the one Taiki had dreamed at the start of the series) was about to begin. Plot aside, I really disliked the Xros thing. Especially after the evolution that occurs in episode 30. It feels like the Armor Shinka from Zero Two; a weak diversion. There's no creative crossing, and the only time that there's different crosses it's for comedic purposes. That leaves pretty much most of the Digimon cast as useless paper weights, in a place where there's no paper. Though I have to say, the aspect of "collecting" Digimon is really nice due the context of a war, like they're recruiting the Digimon. I thought that this would be a important aspect, like Taiki comes out of nowhere and start building an army. But sadly, the other Digimon are barely used. Also, about the Digimemories, what a load of crap. They basically serve no purpose. They use it out of the blue and it doesn't change anything about the situation they're in. I don't really know why they've included it.

Visually the second part is almost the same. The animation feels a little worse some times but overall is kinda the same. There's one thing that I hate though, is that in this part everyone is so fucking shinny, it looks like they have lube all over their bodies. It's disgusting and I really dislike this style. It made the generic style I talked about worse than it already was. The OST keeps sucking.

Now, as for the plot, I'm really disappointed. It ended up being more of the same. Instead of going to the various lands trying to get the Code Crown they now go to "countries" or kingdoms or whatever it was called, and try to defeat the Dark Lords or something. Trough this we get some really solid episodes, the one's involving Kiriha's past and Yuu as well. I would like more of that but sadly I didn't get it. Speaking about Yuu, there was one thing I was going to complain on the first part, but I ended up holding up to see whether or not they would talk about the consequences of killing Digimon. After all they're in a war. This was something that was treated well on most seasons, but here it was basically non existent. They talked about this with Yuu, because he thought it was a game and he had to conquer everything to win, like a certain someone (*coughcoughDigimonKaisercoughcough*), but it felt really shallow because they say "Digimon's are living beings, and you're killing them", and then proceed to kill a bunch of Digimon like it was a walk in the park. Yuu had to feel the consequences of killing Digimon, but not the other kids. Anyway, the thing goes on and one and we finally reach the end. The 7 Demon Lords are revived and spirit word and goes back and lots of Xrosses and betrayal and Earth and DigiMemories and stuff. So much was happening, it felt really convoluted IMO. I have to say that battle at the beginning of the last episode, was really great, with them wrecking a enormous army with few numbers and Yuu being creative with the Xrosses. That is what I wanted to see from an anime where war is the "main" plot point, tough I have to give credits where it's due, and this second part increased the amount of strategy in the battles overall, which was really nice. Anyway, sadly that battle lasted a minute or so because it had to give way to the dumbest thing ever: a Xros of basically every Digimon. Also they lost the opportunity to call it X Infinite, which is IMO much better than X 7 Special Mode. And it ends.

Overall it was pretty bad. I would say that it was definitively the worse season, but since it didn't fuck up with previous seasons like Zero Two did, I have to give it a pass.

Digimon Adventure

Digimon Adventure is a pretty damn good show. Being a 54 episodes show, I was pleasantly surprised at the good pacing. This hardly ever gets boring, with every minute being filled with either plot advancing, character development or just some funny interactions. So I enjoyed pretty much the whole ride.

It's name is pretty descriptive. The show has an incredible sense of adventure; these kids end up in an unknown world, and accompanied with these creatures, the Digimon, who don't know much more then them, they explore and survive. Always moving trying to conquer the next challenge, being it get something to eat, or defending a rampant Digimon. And this is pretty defining for the first half of the series. The Devimon arc was a great arc to introduce the kids to this world, to make them know how Digimons and evolution works, to make them understand the problems that this world is facing. Here, they display their defining characteristic, that later will take a more important role with the crests, but you don't realize this until you much later, after learning more about how the crest works in relation to the kids. After this, the Etemon/Crest arc starts. Here they have to use their new understanding of the world to find the crests. Right at the start we have an amazing episode with Taichi experimenting with the crest, resulting in a "failed" evolution, SkullGreymon. Not only this is a good piece of character development, with Taichi starting to understand better his courage, but also it has an big effect on later stuff, with characters having to face their past and nature to get the crest to work. In this arc we have some great development on Taichi, Sora, Koushirou and Takeru, whose development have big impact on Yamato later on.

With a good progress, and a more complete understanding of this world and their situation, comes the Vandemon arc. The transition between arcs is great. Taichi visits the real world (who looks really odd in this case), in some great foreshadowing. The arc focus is on the unknown 8th kid, and a race to see who can find he/she first. Here, the kids are put to the test on the Digital World, and once they get to the real world things get serious. What I really love about this, is their relation to their parents, how they try to hide the Digimons at first and how they end up telling the parents. Jou and Mimi, together with Hikari get some great development here. It's an incredible arc overall; many of it's greatness lies within the details and interactions, so there isn't much I can say; is something that must be seen to appreciate. After this is all done, we move to the last arc, the four Dark Masters. It's a short arc, and it concludes things very well. Here Yamato finally gets the majority of his development. He have to cope with the fact that Takeru has grown and doesn't need him that much. He goes on a journey to try and understand what real friendship means. The left plot points get their explanations and the whole adventure ends with, I have to say, an out of place villain. The Apocalymon arc (if you can call it an arc), while nice on it's on (the scenes of the kids activating the crests within themselves was great), felt really out of place. We have the dark masters trying to dominate and transform the digital world, and just as this ends comes Apocalymon, which is apparently the despair of all the Digimon "species" (?) that were lost due to natural evolution. Honestly it don't really sounds like a problem, and I don't really know why it was added, especially because the previous arc had nothing to do with it. I'll give it a pass, only because of that great moment. I certainly had the feels with the ending.

Visually it was really good most of the time, and I was surprised at the CG; I didn't remember them being this good. They have a certain style to them, that's kinda unique, and oddly appropriate. The OST is one of the best things about this. I'm really damn sad that I had to listen to the awful dub OP, which is bad enough in English, but much, much worse in Portuguese. The first ED and Brave Heart are really good as well. The overall OST is damn good, and one of my favorites of the entire series.

Overall, it was an amazing ride. I have some problems with it, that are common to the series as whole, so I will talk about them later. It's certainly recommendable. Although it was supposed to be a children show, it's really deep, especially with the kids background.

Digimon Tamers

Let me start by saying that I didn't like the cast at the beginning. While Takato was different than Taichi (and thank God for that), I couldn't really see him being the leader type. He looked like he was going to be a little whinny to be honest. Ruki was annoying right away, being super arrogant, and Lee, while nice, didn't seem to much "active" (like, letting things be, never trying to change stuff he didn't like and this kind of stuff). But right at the beginning there's some great character development and they've all become great. Takato became more bold, Ruki became more kind (and less arrogant), and Lee became more decisive, stopping with the "don't fight" thing; he accepted the situation and the fact they had to fight to survive.

Also, I want to dedicate a paragraph here at the beginning about Culumon and Terriermon. Why? Because they're the cutest things that have the disgrace of not actually existing and being a fictional character. Because, I really, really want a real Culumon and Terriermon to have with me. When they appeared on screen I couldn't help but to feel happy, and when I finished watching the episodes for the day, all I could think is how damn cute they were. I searched for a Terriermon plush, but I only found one good one, and it was a one time commission on DeviantArt :(

With the cards being the only thing I knew about this season (although not to the extent they were used), I was a little worried. I didn't like the Digimentals of Zero Two, so I was afraid it was going to be some bad gimmick. But thankfully, it was nicely used. The boosts in "stats" weren't that good, but the ones like White Wings and Brave Shield were really good. It gives the Digimon an opportunity to be good in something they're not particularly good at normally. Terriermon, being small and having the form he have, don't really excel at defense, but with the Brave Shield, he can have a decent defense. And there were some creative uses, like using the Training Gears to stop movement of Gorilamon, or using the White Wing to trap IceDevimon in the ceiling.

So it was really a good start. The first half takes place in the real world. Much of Digimons and the Digital World is unknown at this point, and we have something very much like the Devimon arc of Adventure. The kids fight against a series of Digimon, and trough this process they learn more about things, especially concerning evolution, in this first arc. It also serves to place Yamaki's organization in the story. After that, comes the Deva arc, which presents the first real antagonist to the series. Little by little, they learn more about the Digital World and how it relates to the real world. Things get really intense here and Yamaki's organization starts to have a bigger impact. But it's when Culumon gets captured and they go to the Digital World to save him that shit gets really serious.

Before going about the Digital World arcs, I have to mention, that thankfully, they told their parents beforehand. Their interactions were really nice, and a important piece of character development. Anyway, the Digital World. Here we have the same sense of adventure of, well, Adventure. With the unknow in front of them, they explore in search of their lost friend. There's some major stuff here. Impmon's development was amazing, the death of Leomon and how it affected Juri, the appearance of Ryo, the position Yamaki take and how now they've an group with the original developers and how they try to help the kids, the fact kids were being separated constantly and how that brought some nice development, one of the Devas changing sides and being Lee's sister partner, and the Kyuukokutai evolution. I have to say I really love the way they did the fusion here, how it was about the Tamer and his Digimon fighting together, and what a better way to to that then by fusing them together. I also like that the Digimon and the kids can speak separately. And it's really important to note that all three main kids get a Kyuukokutai evolution. Anyway, after some nice fights and stuff, we see the 4 Digimon gods being fully utilized (thanks for nothing Zero Two). Their different opinions on the matters at hand were interesting, and bring some light to everything that has been happening so far. We learn about the ultimate enemy and in time for the kids to go back. Juri being used as a vessel was really smart and dark (like the whole season), though I don't see how the kids couldn't realize how strange she was, how little life she had in herself. The fight is brought to the real world again with the D-Reaper, and I really like how the ultimate enemy is not an Digimon, and not evil per se, but a program that got too advanced on it's own. I don't like the way that Alice was introduced here. There was, honestly no need for her, and she goes away the same way she came in: out of nowhere. But aside that, this final arc was really strong. I loved how the secondary kids got a little action, how Impmon's redemption came about, and the end, where the Digimons go away, was really emotional.

The OST is great, and visually it looks really good. The first evolution animation, with the Digimon's "skin" disintegrating and their new forms appearing over the wireframe-like "base", is really, really good. Overall, I loved this season. I'm also at the camp that wants Tamers 2 now. I just want to see more of this world. They do so many things right, it became my favorite season.

Also, Terririmon <3 (Shame his evolutions sucks).

Digimon Savers

Let me begin by saying the obvious. Savers is different. But what I found now on this rewatch is that in the context of the other seasons, it's not actually that different. It draws many aspects that were also found in the other seasons.

I love the characters here. While they're grown, there's is still as much development as the other seasons and the feel is the same. This might sound bad, like it implies that the teens feel like children when they should feel like teens, but that's not the case. If you consider that Masaru and Thoma are 14 years old (and that Yoshino is 18) they actually feel (and look) a little different from their age. But anyway, that doesn't interfere much, because to be honest I only discovered their ages right now as I'm writing this. Masaru is your regular hot headed, stubborn character, that believes everything will be alright if they keep on going (very much like Taichi, Daisuke and Takuya), but what is different now is his aggressiveness and the whole "that's how real men do stuff". The men thing is a little annoying at times but it fits his character so it doesn't bother me that much. Now, about those punches. I feel the "right thing" would be to hate them, especially since there's some absurd moments where there's no way he would've survived, but it's so much over the top and batshit insane that I love it. It also makes the character very unique (at least within the series, because shounens are full of those) and rememberable. Thoma is the classic super smart, super rich guy who has problems with the dumb hot headed guy. But that's just on the surface. He actually builds a friendship with Masaru and has the whole thing going on with his dad and sister, so he is actually interesting. Yoshino is kinda okay. I don't dislike her, but she never took the front. She's always there, supporting, but there's no episode where she's the center. All characters get some development, but Yoshino's never really moves forward and is kinda forgotten. It would've been nice to see her mom or her sisters, besides that flashback. On the other hand Thoma and especially Masaru get's lots of development. With that out of the way, it's time to talk about the best character of the season, Ikuto. I absolutely love Ikuto's character. Being raised by Digimons, he brings a lot of interesting ideas, some that I don't see being brought much often elsewhere. He had great character development, especially having to come to terms of him being a human (and his hate of humans for killing his Digimon mother) when he met his real parents, and stayed with Masaru. Sadly he didn't have much presence in the later parts of the season, but overall I still think he was great. The other characters were interesting as well, and Masaru's mother was super cute.

Anyway, moving to the plot. I feel that there were many idea here that were similar to those found in the other seasons. We begin with DATS, which reminds me a lot of Tamer's organization, and kind feels like what it would've become if what happened in Tamers did not happened and instead the kids joined the organization as agents. He have some episodic stuff, the monster of the week stuff, but it was really interesting. Seeing Masaru and Thoma becoming friends was nice, and the idea that it was human emotion that brought the Digimon to the real world was super interesting. Later they go to the Digital World in search of Mercurymon. At this point things start get a little more serious. The introduction to characters past are done in this arc, and interactions between the main three and Ikuto and Falcomon were really interesting. Mercurymon was interesting as well, but I wish they hadn't mentioned he was one of the Olympus Twelve, as it never appeared again and got me curious on what they actually are. But anyway, they make an emergency exit to the real world and Ikuto's development starts, as he ends up siding with the main trio, unwillingly at first. Then Kurata's arc starts. Before I go on, I just have to say I really want to punch Kurata on the face, multiple times. With that said, Kurata initially appear to be a good ally, but he and the Ministry of Confidentiality get super suspicious (the ministry always was to be honest) super fast, and shit starts falling down. They go back to the Digital World with a bunch of soldiers, they learn what Kurata really is, but too late, as he kills Mercurymon (who I liked, so fuck you Kurata). More bad stuff happens, DATS is destroyed, and now they have to act on their own. They go back to the Digital World and another plot point is introduced. The Bio Digital Fusion Evolution Merge trio. It's an interesting concept here, but very much like Frontiers, don't feel that good. There's also the fact that the three new characters mostly serves as distractions, even though they get a little bit of development (mostly Ivan though). They come and go but don't leave a mark. The El Doradomon part was really nice though, as it carried a sense that they couldn't win in this state as they were. After that there was the Thoma "betrayal". If I was in Thoma's place I would've punched Kurata in the face (maybe Masaru started influencing me) when his father introduced him as the guy who would save his sister. This betrayal felt very odd from the start. Initially I though it was going to be a "destroy it from the inside out" type of thing, but it ended up only being a bomb on his sisters neck. It moves to the end of the arc with Belphemon which was a real interesting fight. It ends with Kurata fucking up everything again and thus comes the last arc, the Royal Knights. I'm really glad that this arc exists, as the little we had in Frontier was really underwhelming. That said, I don't have much to talk about this arc. It was really good, as it fleshed out the Knights concept, tied some knots and prepared the ending, as well having some great fights. I'm not super happy with Yggdrasil stuff specially that second form, but it brought some interesting and emotional stuff, so I'm okay with it. It end very much like Tamers, with the Digimon going back, but this time Masaru goes as well, following the steps of his father. The epilog was really nice, and everything felt natural, unlike the one at 02 where the kids ended up being stuff nowhere close to who they actually were.

Story wise, while it had many plots, I feel that the grand majority were finished (unlike Zero Two), and they were all interesting. Some of them were a little over the top, like BanchouLeomon and Daimon Suguru, but overall I really liked them all. I think it had good pacing as well, and it managed it's time really good, being the shortest of the seasons. I also thought it looked very good, and really like the design of basically every Digimon. One thing I have to mention is the fights, which were really good and fluid.

Now the best part about savers is the OST. If you're in doubt whether you should watch it (you should), I hope the OST can convince you. Because, damn that shit is GREAT. Both OPs were really good, the first ending was really nice, while the second ending is all sorts of amazing, the evolution song, Believer, is really damn good, and the rest of the OST really fit the mood of the series.

Overall, I really, really like this season. Sadly, I think most people never watched it, or just dismiss it from the first episodes, which is a shame, because it's actually really good. It actually felt very close to Tamers to me. I would be down to some Savers 2 as well, as there is much I would like to revisit, and I would love to see Masaru's journey in the Digital World, as well as seeing what the Royal Knights became after the ending..

Series Overall
I really like Digimon. Always liked it, and now I like it even more. I love how deep it can get, while being a kid's show. It's strength lies in the characters interactions with not only themselves but the world around them and how they react to it in their own way. It's watching the characters grow as what they experience shape them. And what makes it different from other stories, is how the Digimon are also part of their partners growth. That's the reason I dislike the seasons I dislike, because they have very few of this stuff.

Now, there are somethings that bother me that happens a lot trough most of the seasons. My main gripe is the fights. The fights here are pretty bad. Most of the time the Digimon are standing waiting for their opponent say the name of the attack and waiting for the attack to connect. It's all very stiff. In comparison, I think Pokemon's fights, especially lately, are much better. They're dynamic, fast paced, and feels more like actual fights. This is something I really, really want to see improved. Savers was the best in that aspect in my view, but it was still very stiff. The fight at the start of the Savers "movie" is my ideal. See here, from 3:05 to 5:40. And also, please put some strategy to the fights.

Another thing that bother me is that they spend way too much time on evolution scenes. Show them fully on the first few times, but for the love of God cut them short later on. And also, I really dislike how in some seasons not everyone get a full evolution. In Tamers and Savers everyone was on equal ground as they all had the ability to get to the last level of evolution, but not on other seasons. I would also like if they varied their main characters a little. Some characters fell a lot like previous characters in the series, especially Taichi and his clones. They should also go a little deeper with world building stuff. I would love to see more of Royal Knights, Deva, Digimon Gods, Olympus 12 and what not. They make the digital world feel alive. And the last thing, the villains bother me a little. They all want to destroy everything, or cover everything with darkness, including the real world, but I never see how that would be beneficial to them. They say they want to rule everyone, but that does nothing as far as motivation goes. It's like evil for the sake of evil. I would love for them to flesh out their villains and give them better motivations.

Closing thoughts and the future
This was a rollercoaster of a "marathon". Some great moments, and some awful ones, but I can say it was worth it. Digimon is definitively a series I want to grow. And I really want it to spread some of it's good stuff onto similar series (mainly Pokemon). I'm eagerly awaiting Digimon Adventure tri. and I expect good stuff from it. If Digimon is like Windows, alternating between good and bad releases, or seasons in case of Digimon, then it will be definitively good =P. In the future I would like to see a Tamers 2 and a Savers 2 as well. Maybe due their similarities they could link these two universes together. It would be interesting to say the least. Also, for some reason I'm trying to imagine a Digimon season done by SHAFT and it's kinda an awesome idea. Have those weird framing for character introspection and development would certainly be interesting. At least much better than falling into a blurry blob of dark colors when they fall into darkness =P. But then again I'm a sucker for SHAFT's style so who am I to say that.

Anyway, would I recommend this to anyone? Maybe. If you want to get into Digimon, I would only recommend you to watch Adventure, Tamers and Savers, and maybe both the Adventure and Zero Two movies, and maybe Tamers movies if you need to see more of Tamers. If tri. ends up being good and draws a lot from Zero Two you should watch Zero Two as well, but let's hope this is not the case.

Also, I need a real Terriermon in my life, one with a better evolution line.

EDIT: Goddammit BGBW

Maria the Virgin Witch-1

I guess I liked this but I have no clue what they're going to make a series out of. Right now, I have no clue about the plot direction. I can also see the virgin/sex jokes getting old too.
That's kind of where I'm at. Something tells me it'll be a personality-less "lets save the world" thing that fantasy stories tend to devolve into. Maybe not though!

Yoru no Yatterman Episode 1:

Another year, another gritty reboot of a classic Tatsunoko franchise and this one looks like it is smack dab in the middle of Casshern Sins cynicism and Gatchman Crowds idealism thus far. I am interested to see how this plays out in the future.

Hey ummm...can somebody gif/webm the part at 23:40 from Gourmet Girl Graffiti with the little preview and the singing mentioning the festival in episode 2? I think my heart exploded but thats fine.

Woah...well, Death Parade has officially become my favorite show of this season, hands down. What a beautiful first episode. But, i just can't believe this show is going to stay this quality - anime has burned me too many times!

Are you guys all bakas? Do you accept what the show tells you at face value or did you miss all the really obvious stuff?

Why do you think there was any time travel involved? I don't get what gave you that impression. The Vilkis has the power to move and apparently alter dimensions, so it's pretty obvious they've just been taken to 'real' world which as you may have noticed is future Tokyo. How would Ange's city have turned into Tokyo in 500 years with a different language and Tokyo locations and Tokyo roads? That's not 500 years in Ange's future at all. It's just that the entire show is set 500 years after the event of "World War 7".

The event's in 'Ange's World' are taking place at the same time as the events in Future Tokyo. It's just now we happen to know some of the backstory.

Embryo appears to have created the false reality that is Ange's world. Apparently Embryo has the power to recreate it almost at will.

Uhhh, I prefer to watch Cross Ange in the most optimal way - sleep deprived at 2 in the morning the minute it comes out.

Yoru no Yatterman 01

I don't know shit about Yatterman first off. Second off, this was pretty good regardless.

That was one hell of an opening. The moon gets bullied a lot in anime. Not as much as Jupiter but no one likes him. I'm interested to see where this goes.

So I doubt there's probably very few people familiar with the Yatterman IP going in. I sure as hell have no clue. The show does use a quick and dirty method to somewhat fill you in but it's clear that there's probably a lot more to the story than just that storybook. I feel like that's a somewhat effective method to both fill in the audience and characters as it leaves things open to interpretation and misunderstanding in an organic method, as seen by this episode.

This episode is relatively slow in that not much happens but I find that it works to really help understand the main characters. I now have a very clear understanding of the main character, where the story is going to go, the setting, and the tone. It's a great pilot, something I feel a number of works this season have been sort of lacking. Leopard's relationship with her mother feels fleshed out despite the short run time. I also liked that she
doesn't mope that much but rather uses that incident as a driving force for her. It sets her up as an active protagonist.
There are so many directorial tricks to this episode that make it standout in subtle ways. Stuff like
the mother turning into angel feathers as Leopard reaches out to her was a fantastic way of showing her mother dying. There's also basic stuff like the flame dying out at the birthday party. Overlapping the appearance of the Yatterman with the storybook works really well due to their evil appearance and how contradictory the storybook appears.
Then there's also the light hearted comedic moments that really serve to
balance some of the heavier elements.
I felt like this was extremely effective at giving the series some sort of flair to it.

The music was pretty good but moreso than the actual tracks themselves, I like how they used the music. The music is used to portray the mindset of Leopard for example rather than just accompanying a scene, the obvious example being the appearance of the Yattermen.
The animation is up there with Rolling Girls in being the best this season. It's not as outlandish as Rolling Girls but there are so many scenes in this episode that are just really well animated and full of life in a surprising manner. The storyboarding was extremely solid for example Leopard only seeing a light when yelling to the Yattermen is symbolism of her hope for her mother and her one sided portrayal of the Yattermen. There's effective of contrasting color palette to portray the depressed state of Leopard.

Oh and on top of all of this, the OP is pretty good.

Subete no aware
Talking about Hanamonogatari, i remember Araragi have a reflection when he's cutting Kanbaru hair. So, i guess he manage to solve his vampirism issue?
Oh good catch! I totally forgot the ending of Hanamonogatari.

Either that or he went full vampire. IIRC, Shinobu mentions that with more of her full power, she could do something as easy as making her reflection appear despite being a vampire.
That's a possibility too, although I would be surprised if he went that way unless something major happens in the final arcs of the series.

Its always great reading your impressions of a show since they're always so well thought out and written. Not to mention you noticed quite a few things I didn't catch.
Cheers.

I guess deep down that's what he is ( confirmed by hanekawa & senjyou gahara in nekomonogatari white ) but i think that he had learned to let some things go .He will certainly help if asked , but seeing as now he embrace the "people can only save themselves" attitude that oshino meme had , he would let kanbara solve the things only she could solve.

I can answer that ..but that's like SPOILERS... curse you nishio !! to tell your story in out of order events !!!!
I guess come to think of it, he was almost purposefully absent during a lot of Monogatari SS. I don't remember him doing much during the resolution of the Hanekawa arc, and of course, the solution to the Nadeko arc basically involves him never seeing her again.
(Although there's also the Kaiki = Ararararararagi thing that the shows seem to be pushing too.)

Also I find it kind of amusing that the whole series is completely out of order. It reminds me of Haruhi S1 in a good way.

My opinion of Tuski improved thanks to this post.

Did you ever essay about Hana?
It's funny because I find the Monogatari shows to be visually interesting, despite the fact that they're all Shaft backgrounds. It's not the most complex use of imagery, but I appreciate that they're thinking about how themes can be expressed through both the images and the character interactions.

And yeah, here's what I wrote about Hanamonogatari back when it aired:

HEROMAN - 23

Oh hey,
the plant thing from the island mini-arc actually had something to do with this arc after all.

In any case though,
Heroman gets a cool upgrade, and it turns out that the goal of the Skrugg remnants is to resurrect their fallen leader. Still think Nick's still a part of this though, and I'm assuming he was the one who knocked Will out at the end there.

I really like the setting it feels grounded yet very fantastical. I don't really know what's going on other than what seems to be the Hundred Years' war. Hopefully the show gets fleshed out a bit more (no pun intended.)

Cool people know Yatterman because they played as Yatterman-1 in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.

This is me.

I'm watching the episode right now and I've never had any interest in his series besides using him, Doronjo, and his gal occasionally in TvC.

Along with everyone's favorite TEKKAMAN BLADE.

Maria the Virgin Witch - 1

I really liked this, particularly the contrast between a convincing down-to-earth medieval setting and the more aloof, outlandish witches and their familiars. The fashion gap, as silly as it is, also reflects that there is a dividing line between both worlds: fantasy and reality or, if you prefer, anime and history. The jokes aren't always that funny, plus sexual humor dealing with virginity is often a difficult subject, but I appreciated that the comedy wasn't the same as what we see in generic harem shows. Moreover, I still enjoyed the interactions between the cast, including Maria and her succubus as well as what was going on with Joseph and the other regular human characters.

Speaking of which...most of those normal-looking characters (plus the ones still not introduced yet) are new to the anime, which is a wise choice as far as I'm concerned. If not everyone in the audience can sympathize with Maria herself, at least we should get to see more of her impact on the lives of others, positive or negative. For that matter, the unusually detailed medieval combat on a TV budget was aided by some interesting storyboarding work, though the animation itself wasn't necessarily lavish. In any case, the series looks well-produced rather than all that expensive, which is fair enough. Hopefully the quality can stay relatively consistent.

For those who have issues with where the story can go...from what I've researched, the original work isn't some sort of grand tale about saving the world from a demonic force. There is an obvious source of opposition, with the satirical jabs against the Church and so on, but religion itself is not presented as being evil. Taniguchi might alter the specific road to the conclusion, as seen in this episode I imagine the anime may try to make the Hundred Years War itself more of a highlight, but the underlying point is rather personal (and no, it's not limited to someone's virginity either).

Gourmet Girl Grafitti 1

There was food porn and eating porn.

Gratuitous eating aside, it's not too bad honestly. Pretty straightforward and easy to grasp with my experience of anime. It certainly doesn't make me feel like dying inside so far since it's not completely full of aspects that would be better off not being in this show.

It has potential to be good garbage animu.

Cool people know Yatterman because they played as Yatterman-1 in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.

The villain character from that is my favorite character in the game, she's just so goofy with her giant boulder special and minions and shit.

Not as good as Turning Girls, but most things aren't!

Speaking of which, was there ever full songs released of the OP or ED? Or even a longer version of thatKaru no uta gagagagah?

New season is starting pretty well, last season was real lame so this is refreshing.

Absolute Duo

So bad/generic I've already completely forgotten what it was about, dropped.

Assassination Classroom

This is one I've been meaning to read the manga of for a while but never got around it.

The art/style looks so tacky, especially the characters and especially their faces. Great OP. That said it was pretty fun and as long as they don't keep repeating the same jokes over and over again (which they kind of already did with all the speed jokes) and kept the straight man retorts (is there a word for that kind of humor, because it's in like every 'comedy' anime and it always sucks and takes away from anything that would have been funny otherwise) on the down low.

Also is MC a dude or a chick? I mean I guess it really doesn't matter, but I wish they wouldn't wear their pants so high, looks proper dumb.

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love!

Kinda novel, but kinda boring, the emo depressed celery guy was funnier than the main cast, I'll give it one more episode and then probably drop it after that.

Death Parade

Basically a worse rethread of the OVA with a much more cliche situation/couple, but still entertaining. Love the OP, doubt I'll ever drop it even if it just 2 random people playing some dumb game and start freaking out so their spill their contrived backstory, because that would still be really enjoyable for me.

The massive distance between every characters nose and mouth really bugs me though, in OVA I didn't even notice it on anyone except the bartender.

Durarara!! X2

I liked Durararara so I'll be watching all 3 cours, but the 1st episode felt super weak.

Also something about how it looked felt really off, like felt real rough and janky compared to the first season (which I rewatched like a year ago). But that might be rose tinted glasses and blu ray bias talking.

Shit OP and shit ED though, which is a shame because I really liked both the ED and OP of the first cour of season one.

Also if someone has read the Light novels, can you tell me how long I'll have to wait for the fight between niles and
Shizuo? It's all I've ever cared about in Durarara ever since Niles mentioned it on the cruise line arc in the baccano LNs.

Kantai Collection: KanColle

Shits dumb, dropped. The CG wasn't bad tho, as far as anime cg goes.

Also there was no Bismarck, which is the only girl/ship/thing I know, because of reasons...

Junketsu no Maria

I like it, the simple character designs, the settings, it has a lot charm. I'll see where it goes and give it a couple more episodes. I don't mind all the sex talk, but I hope they don't go too dumb with it, but it's an anime so who am I kidding?

Saekano

I read the manga, it had 3 different ones, they were all were kinda meh as was this episode, but I hear the LN has a different story so yeh, I'll give the proper episode 1 a go, but it's not likely it'll stay. Being a parody would be fine and all, but it's not really funny at all.

Those shitty CG fingers are fucking jarring though.

Also, MC with his fucking Polo shirt tucked into his pants which are pulled up a mile high looks super stupid stupid, reminds me of my dad, except even he isn't lame enough to pull his pants up close to that high.

Shinmai Maou no Testament

I wish I bothered to read the synopsis before I watched this piece of shit. This MC is like a shitty wannabe of the MC from Hagare Yuusha, except not even 1% as well. Dropped but I'll probably watch the first 5 mins of episode 2 for some closure.

Also it has the animation quality of low budget hentai.

The Rolling Girls

I really like this shows style, I also really like the character designs, the fight/eating animations were all great. the style in general really reminds me kyousougiga for some reason.

Anyways, I really enjoyed that episode, but I hope they keep the whole 'obvious moron who always wants to help but keeps making shit worse' trait MC has on the downlow because that shit is the worst. If Mach Green dies because of something stupid MC does I'll drop this shit so fast.

But yeah, really liked it, hope it keeps it up.

Yuri Kuma Arashi

I liked how the backgrounds/environments look but I can't stand the characters, hate how they look, HATE THEM.

And those are supposed to be bears? Like come the fuck on, I was expecting like RWAR RWAR bears and shit, those tiny midget things might as well be cats for all the difference it makes. Like does Japan even have bears? Cuz if that's supposed to be a Japanese bear like that aint shit, I bet any average grizzly or polar bare could take out every japanese bare combined then.

I don't really like or dislike the show, I don't get it, I don't enjoy it, I skipped through most of it just to get to bears and be super disappointedly. Dropped.

Man pretty good season so far, hope it keeps going strong.

I get the modern/outlandish fashion from the witches is done to differentiate them from the normal people, but I don't like the typical "gap" in the MC design: she seems she is going to the night clubs with her clothes and accessories... but at the same time she is virgin and she seems particularly innocent.

Rolling Girls 1
Very colorful, reminding me of Yozakura Quartet. Also very wild and exciting. Not exactly sure why the Rest are so essentially when the Best completely overpower them
