Don't expect Dying Light reviews till release date or later

Well, I like Techland, both Call of Juarez and Dead Island are fun games. But I'm not supporting shenanigans like this.

Where's all the footage on Youtube you guys mention from? Preview code on big sites? Youtube influencers getting the game early? (honest question, I didn't follow the game closely)

Knowing that outlets won't get code until release day will also be interesting to keep in mind when looking at which sites are running a day 1 review and which sites will wait.

Just typing in "Dying Light Playthrough" in Youtube search will give you tons of videos of the campaign being played from the start till the end of the preview version which is multiple missions in and is hours of footage depending on the channel.

Sounds to me like maybe they are crunching this weekend to get something in last minute. I mean a huge chuck of the game is on YouTube. Why delay reviews then?

Not everyone wants to sit and watch hours of someone else play a game and possibly see spoilers just to justify a purchase. A review score will do just fine.

So looking at a game for yourself and deciding is not better than looking at "game is full of bugs and boring 9/10 GOTY IGN"?

Ok.

This is why i stopped watching them, too many things were getting spoiled for me.

The fact that there's a lot of footage of the game online already makes me think the reason why they're doing this is because they're desperately trying to finish QA before release date. It might be a very good game in the end, but I'd be worried about it being rather buggy at launch.

i've watched like 4-5 hours of gameplay...Better than 100000 reviews for me.
I'm pretty sure of what this game is at minima (on the first housr) and on this base i'm sure i won't regret a day one buying.

Essentially it's Dead Island 2 (or 3).

Riptide really did feel like a B-team level expansion pack to the first game. In some ways I found it to be worse than the original.

This is Dead Island 2, for what that is worth. Though, Deep Silver is releasing their own Dead Island 2 as well...

This embargo doesn't sound too good. That is usually a sign that the publisher doesn't want to lose those day one sales over terrible reviews.

Well there is no embargo...

They just aren't giving reviewers the game before release

It sounds like some reviewers have the preview code, it just hasn't been updated to the final release so they can't review it. It's not that hard to wait a few days until reviews come out. And, just FYI, if you pre-ordered, just don't open it until the reviews are out. You can return unopened games, no problem. So, this shouldn't be a huge burden to anyone.

There are hundreds of videos of the preview versions on Youtube, all of them with hours and hours of footage of the campaign.

I am pretty sure people can use that to paint themselves a picture of the game.
Yep. Much better than a review in my opinion.

It's not an embargo if reviewers don't get a copy at all!

But could some of that be to blame on the fact that they are having duplication problems?

I mean if they cannot get the game to everyone else but NA (or is it just USA?) then I think review copies being shipped will be the last thing on their mind.

I was getting this day 1, don't want it on digital, so I guess I am just going to have to wait. No date has been released yet I guess?

Hasn't Destiny taught us not to trust beta/preview content as representation of the final product? People were jazzed about that beta, ready to see more - only to realize the lack of in game content.

Seems like they're not confident it will review well, and it would hurt pre-orders of the game if that dropped a week before it came out.
I played Dead Island and it was OK, but I also paid about 14 bucks for it, if i spent 60 I'd probably have different feelings about that game. It really wasn't that good, but a fun distraction when played with friends (playing solo sucked).
If that's the kind of game to expect with Dying Light, I'd be worried too.

Pewdiepie gets the exclusive. Fuck off, gaming press.

But a whole bunch of people, including IGN got that demo and like some said theres tons of video's online(IGN have some tips and tricks and all on their App)...and like many said,it's Dead Island 1.5...if people dont know what this game is about by now,its probably not their genre...

From what I have seen it will probably get good reviews...

This is exactly how I feel. Also most youtubers just rabble on, I want a breakdown of the game and it's mechanics and I want to read about it as opposed to having a video with spoilers.

I seriously hope you're joking lol.

Why would this be a joke?!

Probably, which is why they're going the Dead Island marketing route. That game only has a 71 Metacritic, yet it was very popular with Youtube users. So they're skipping reviewers and trying to reinforce the crowd that supported and made DI successful.

I loved playing the first Dead Island solo. This looks like an evolution of the same idea, so I am confident I will enjoy it as well.

I mean, we can't forget Dead Island's trailer, either. The IGN vid of it on YT has 14 million views alone.

That was a one-time thing and Dying Light doesn't have the same luxury.

I feel like boycott is a strong word, but all this shady business with numerous pre-order DLC packs practically begging you to pre-order the game and keeping the game from the press definitely isn't making this fence sitter feel confident in the final game's quality.

everyone go buy grim fandango remastered instead

I approve this message.

I remember reading that this game was going to have native VR support. Has anything come of that? I'm admittedly more interested in how well that works than reviews for the actual game's mechanics right now.

Journalists should fire back. They should review the copy of the game they get sent, then add a small review of the patch after it applied. Also reviewers should say that this is happening as they are reviewing the product as it was supplied to them. The publishers should get called out on this sort of behaviour as much as possible.

I read in an article with Techland that VR (or atleast Oculus) support will be added post-launch.

Edit: found it.

Yeah that's a good point, although reviewers can only account for what, a hundred copies or so?
