Surf's Up!

An incredible game if abit short. Still, it was a VERY fun three hours with great gameplay and an awesome tracklist to boot.

So Viking and Conan are actually worth checking out? Hmm. Maybe I'll look into them.
Viking is OK, but it drags on way too long. The game lasts about twice as long as the fun does.

RPG's become boring at a certain point, this game changes it up by having some 2D platforming. Its my under appreciated game.

Runner's up:
The Getaway
Valkyria Chronicles

Got to be Devil May Cry 4. That game receives far more hate than the irritating environmental repetition warrants, given the amazing combat design. It has many, many flaws; but I prefer it to DMC 3 overall. Neither game gave me exactly what I wanted in a sequel to the original DMC, but the positives outweigh the negatives in both cases. Personally, I prefer the art, enemy design and combat of 4 to that of 3.

But while I can't claim it's the most underappreciated game this gen, I feel Dark Sector is depressingly unloved. I get why people don't like it; but I can't understand why so many hate it so much, or why it sold so poorly. I wanted a not-Gears-of-War with superpowers and awesome weapons; and that's just what I got. It should have been tougher, and the enemies should have been more interesting. But I love it for what it gets right: the glaive. One of the most satisfying weapon-based gameplay mechanics in all of gaming. If I could wish a sequel upon one could-be franchise with an uncertain future, above all others, I'd choose Dark Sector. It also has some fantastic sound design. Worth buying for the sound effects alone at its current price.

It gets a bit repetitive in the third act but kicking the shit out of the enemies never got old to me. I enjoyed every second of the game.

True. But the battles are epic. Those boss battles where you Send in dragons to lench a sorcerers army while youre on the move never got old. That game was pretty fun for hack and slash fare.

The Outfit. Co-op and multiplayer was unique and a lot of fun.

Too Human.

Yeah, I said it. At $20 (used) its a damn fine console hack and slash with some nice depth, trippy world, and *fuck-awesome* combat once you take the time to figure out how everything works.

I got it about a week ago on a lark, and since then I've clocked a nutso amount of hours with the thing. Its damn good fun.
I wholeheartedly agree. I'll be the first to admit that it isn't a great game, but it sure isn't the steaming turd the message board masses make it out to be.

Probably most arcade racing games. Seems the genre is just under appreciated as a whole. If it isn't a launch game no one cares. Games like Motorstorm PR and PGR4 are awesome.

Awesome game probably my 3rd favorite Wii game behind Mario and Fire Emblem.

The Bigs - Arcade style baseball game that is fantastic pick up and play baseball that recalls simpler classic baseball games of the past.

Honorable mention - Test Drive Unlimited - the feeling of cruising around an area really hasn't been replicated in any other game as well as this. Just driving around was fun.

sonic unleashed
Yeah, I almost said this. I think it's Sonic Team's best work since Sonic Adventure and certainly its most ambitious. Sure, the werehog stuff is a bit too long at some points, but I really not sure why people reacted so negatively to the whole game, which I think is pretty great (except the very very endgame).

Tom Clancy's Endwar on PSP. Clean, efficient sprites and tons of content, all wrapped up in a good combat system. It's a bit of a paradigm shift from what people expect from the traditional turn-based strategy titles, but once it clicks, it's great. Damn hard to boot.

Folklore - Just awesome in loads of ways
It's great isn't it. I haven't played it for a while since when it came out, there wasn't many other games available so it got played to death and I got a little tired of Doolin. The music is awesome.

Mirror's Edge - mediocre reviews and sales. some of the most demanding and rewarding control mechanics ever in a game.

Valkyria Chronicles
- strong reviews and poor sales. one of the most original strategy games in a long time, with some of the most memorable minor characters.

Speedball 2 on XBLA. Updated graphics are rubbish but the actual core mechanics are amazing. I put down Halo 3 to play it.

The Club, too. Can't get over how good this game is, yet was totally ignored.

I'll go with Shadowrun.

Shadowrun is great. Got totally shit on just because it didn't use its license properly and launched at $60.

Midnight Club Los Angeles

Idiots keep buying Need For Speed games instead, no matter how shitty they are.

Was just about to post the exact same thing.

Sure, the game contains some bullshit lame storyline that doesn't matter at all, but luckily it doesn't get in the way of the rest of the game in any shape or form.

What you get is an awesome freeroaming arcade racer set in probably the best recreation of Los Angeles ever (based on what I've seen of the city on tv and in films :lol), with great arcade controls, a solid lineup of cars, a really good soundtrack, loads of customization options, fair sense of speed, good challenge (after the patch) and probably the best cockpit view to date (was really surprised by the sheer amount of animation in this view).

It sold like shit, and undeservedly so.

Actually, the sheer amount of underappreciated arcade racers this gen is quite shocking. Test Drive Unlimited, Excite Truck, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Sega Rally, Pure, PGR4, Flatout: Ultimate Carnage and Stuntman: Ignition have all been mentioned numerous times throughout this thread. What's up with that? Did the NFS franchise bleed out the market or something? It's fucking ridiculous! All those games offer SO much fun gameplay... There's hardly any other genre that offers as much value for money as arcade racers if you ask me.

Others I'd like to specifically mention since I had so much fun with them:

Dead Space - Seriously, especially on Hard difficulty it's an incredibly tense game. It also has an awesome menu system, some stunning graphics, incredible sound design and overall very solid gameplay mechanics. It should've sold much more than it did. The same is probably also true for Mirror's Edge, but frankly I'm part of the problem for that one (still have to pick it up).

Pure - Another greatly overlooked arcade racer. It's like SSX on quads, which is quite awesome. The game features some stunning graphics (I thought in parts it looked more beautiful than MSPR) with staggering backdrops and huge jumps, really solid controls, tight physics, a good soundtrack and a very solid customization mode in which you can build your own quads from scratch. It's unbelievable that this game didn't get more love than it did. It probably has to do with the quads, which don't seem to appeal to a wide audience.

Saint's Row 2 - It basically offered everything many people expected to get from GTA4 but didn't, and still it didn't sell nearly as well. GTA4 probably stole too much of it's thunder and it probably comes off too much as a straight ripoff, but it's incredibly fun and there's an assload of content. There's loads of fun(ny) activities to perform next to the very fun main missions (which aren't scripted and contain checkpoints), there's a large amount of customisation available (looks, clothing, houses, vehicles, shops, territories etc.), it features a fully featured coop mode, it contains a very good soundtrack...and still it just came and went like it was nothing special. Sure, it doesn't have GTA4's production values, but in the end what matters more?

Easily PGR4 for me - if there were games that I would truly call "AAA" in terms of quality (and excellent premium & FREE DLC), it would be one of them...

Directly after that would be Viva Pinata 1 & 2, actually I should just say any Rare game lately...

Dunno how "bad" it went sales-wise, but Mirror's Edge as well too - it deserves loads of sales too...

EDIT: Because of all the love it gets, I never considered it to be under-appreciated, but yes, CRACKDOWN... another game I'd put on my AAA pedestal with excellent premium & free DLC...

And yes, Shadowrun!

Space Giraffe.

Because douche bags think all shmups should either play like DoDonPachi or Ikaruga.

EDIT

Oh, and yeah. Like mentioned above. Shadowrun 360. Brilliant fucking game. Best online shooter on the 360. Hands down.

EDIT II

Also, I think some of you folks need to open a god damn dictionary. Games that sold hundreds of thousands of copies and got good to great reviews aren't unappreciated.

Inanna

Not pure anymore!
Most PS3 games; MSPR, WipEout HD, Warhawk, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Folklore, Heavenly Sword and there are more!

I don't see how. After a while a trick shot has a much better chance of getting you a goal than a full Super Charge Shot. Wiimote Block, block, block, block and block. Thats how easy it is to stop.
