Kojima will no longer be a Konami executive from April 1st + KojiPro is no more?

Konami just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase MGS V for either system, nor will they purchase any of Konami's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Konami has alienated an entire market with this move.

Konami, publicly apologize and put back 'A Hideo Kojima Game' for PS4/XB1 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Haha awesome ;)
Lol lots of newbies don't get the reference

I don't see proof that he's leaving; I just see clear evidence of a reorganization.

Even if he were to leave, Konami would be fine. I know most people in here only pay attention to Konami's games (and even then, mostly just their console games), but Konami has diversified very successfully. Yes, Metal Gear is now a huge portion of Konami's console gaming business, but the console gaming business is only a fraction of their overall business at this point.

Nobody is worried or probably cares about Konami itself; We're worried about Kojima.

Seems quite serious.

For a company to actively remove references to KojiPro, means legal branding and changes. The KojiPro additional branding was an asset, so removing those seems like an immediate value loss for Konami.

Either there was a huge fallout, or Kojima is going to start his own thing by himself or with someone.

I think Konami without Kojima is pretty bad situation for Komani.

Serious question: What else does Konami have a stake in other than video games?

They own a very successful line of fitness centers.
They operate slot machines.
They are in charge of Yu-Gi-Oh, which is not as successful as Magic: The Gathering but still chugging along as a card game. They also produce a slew of associated merchandise and toys.
They produce casino equipment for use in Vegas.

Please note that I'm not saying MGS doesn't matter at all, and that Konami is so successful that they can throw Kojima aside without thinking twice. MGS is a successful, major franchise. It matters. I'm just making sure people are aware that Konami isn't some dying company for which Kojima is the last sign of life; Konami are producing fewer console games these days, no question, but the money that used to go to console games is now going to other ventures, many of which are quite successful.

What if Kojima left Konami to work for a first-party studio at say either Microsoft or Sony? He would still be working on Metal Gear since it hasn't gone gold yet, but a first-party wouldn't want his name on a game available on a competing cons....OMG what if the Metal Gear franchise becomes console exclusive? Lol. Sorry, carnival of stupid moment there. It's just Kojima is my favorite game designer.

It's going to feel so wrong to boot up MGSV and not have it show the KojiPro logo.
At least it will likely still say "A Hideo Kojima Game" in the opening credits.

Well, its Konami's loss at the end and we all know that
If Kojima left by himself then I respect his decision
BUT if he's among the layoff then its very disrespectful from Konami towards the man who kept them standing

Good job. If it wasn't for the first sentence, there was just enough variance from what I remember from this to doubt if this was serious or not.

i agree. especially timing-wise. either this 'reorganization' is being done purely for 'incomprehensible for ordinary humans to understand' financial-type reasons, or some kinda parting of the ways scenario seems to've occurred...

really harsh seeing all the 'kojipro' references wiped. really harsh...

Damn! I hope this doesn't affect MGS release. Kojima will do amazing things wherever he is. May be now he can explore brand new IPs!

But damn, this came out of nowhere!

im not sure how kojima would fit with nintendo's strategy of siphoning dollars from whales

A "whale" on mobile is typically anyone they can convince to spend more than $100 on their game.

Given that many Kojima fans bought Phantom Pain and will be buying MGSV, one could make a reasonable argument that most MGS fans are whales.

Should someone start a clock counting how long until we end up seeing some kind of Kojima fronted Kickstarter? With some spiritual Policenauts or Snatcher shit attached to it for maximum Kickstarter'ey

Holy shit at people trying to downplay Kojima's contributions to the franchise in this thread.

Every game he has worked on has his distinctive mark. If you cannot see this then I don't know what to say to you.

Could this be the reason for the U4 delay? Kojima forcing out Druckmann and forcing himself into ND?

What the hell is going on with Naughty Dog?

He basically is the franchise. His touch, as you say, is notable. As much as I enjoyed Rising for example, you could tell he wasn't directly involved, as it lacked that seal of Kojima freshness in some ways.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of them are whales even if they didn't spend more than $100. :p

Ahhh, thanks for this. I honestly would've never guessed since I haven't been following Konami all that much. I just assumed mobile would be their fallback, but there was no announcements or anything to back up my assumption.

Konami renaming Kojima productions makes sense if he is going on a sabbatical.

Removing the "A Hideo Kojima Game" from TPP's box art, however, is straight up disrespectful to everything he has done for the franchise and Konami as a whole.

Incredibly disappointed to see them to that.

It's the end of an era if it's true. Dick move by Konami to remove 'A Hideo Kojima Game' from box arts. Hope Kojima continues to make great games and can create an IP to surpass Metal Gear.
