NPD Sales Results for March 2015 [Up1: Nintendo numbers, PS4 placing]

It's a strange situation. Battlefront marketing associated with PS4 and Xbox One owners playing first.

Yeah, which is why I feel that Sony is going to need to give Battlefront the Destiny treatment (exclusive bundle); EA (and probably many streamers) are going to give the Xbox One version a bit of attention due to early access.
________

$299 with maybe a revision included (any chance of die-shrinks or something to reduce cost by this point?) in August (like the Slim) would be my guess.

Seems too soon for a revision for PS4. I honestly don't think we will see a revised PS4 anytime soon. I think we will see a revised Xbox One before a slimmer PS4 to help sales as it would sell to people who already have an Xbox One (a la Nintendo's strategy with the various 3DS models).

You are thinking way too highly of EA access if you actually think Sony needs to react in any way. They will do a bundle but not because of EA access but because a bundle will sell a lot of PS4s.

No, I'm not saying that Sony needs to make a bundle simply due to Access. I am saying that it will be better if Sony gives Battlefront the Destiny treatment as it would make the game appear to be an exclusive even more and would take attention even further away from anything EA says about the Xbox One version (and they will obviously say something about it as long as EA Access remains exclusive).

I have never understood the push for a PS4 price drop while they are still selling out and can barley keep up with demand. I'm not sure if you guys are aware of PS4's stock issue as it stands.

If they can barely keep up with demand now why are we so quick to assume a price drop is in the works. In all honesty I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 goes the entire year without one.

Well, Spencer said they will make up for SFV, so third party exclusive on Xbox one is happening.

The vast majority of Xbox exclusives are 3rd party. Do you mean taking another established multiplatform game? Any way Microsoft bought Tomb Raider first so I would say they are even now.

Is PS4 really selling out now? Numbers are not outstanding in the U.S. right now although that isn't even half of their market.

PS4 stock issue? I'd like to know where.

It didn't make sense when people asked for Wii price drop, PS4 situation is not the same, at least in America sales are good but not impressive.

Sad to see that Polygon will probably be right on the worst selling Mario Kart, even if they got the expected sales way wrong

Easy call. Wii U is the worst selling Nintendo system.

Edit: On second thought, Mario Kart 8 can outsell Super Circuit.

Heh, to think such generic dragon design could sale to many people.
But I think that's the secret, wider audience don't want to see any dragon beyond the conventional knowledge.

Well, also, Game of Thrones.

He said that on may 30 2014. Microsoft announced Tomb Raider deal later.

EA =/= Square Enix.

Japanese publishers, right now are the ones that are being most suspect towards potentially selling timed/full-exclusivity, (we're seeing Sony get a lot of them, actually) but a lot of the names thrown around like Fallout, etc are western publishers.

Also, she.

Oh.. she.. sorry Kagari

I think Microsoft still can secure exclusives like Tomb Raider, but it's true that they are in a very worst position than on 360 era.

It isn't about being even.

In any case, Microsoft's reason for investing money in probably a 4-6 month exclusivity window for Tomb Raider was because they had nothing remotely similar to Uncharted.

Sony's reason for investing in SFV as a permanent exclusive is allegedly a result of Capcom struggling financially.

I'm not disputing MS can still secure third-party exclusives. I'm sure across the board, Sony/MS/Nintendo has them, in different doses and focus.

But at the same time, I do feel like there are just some IPs that are very, very unlikely to be in that discussion. Stuff like GTA, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, aka the very IPs that print $$$ for that company with massive brand longevity?

I feel like we'd see an exclusive DOOM, Dishonored or Wolfenstein long before we'll see Fallout/Elder Scrolls.

Certainly, but if Microsoft paid for full Titanfall console exclusive, it's not out of question to think they can pay for timed exclusive Fallout 4.

Titanfall is new IP. New IP doesn't cost much, especially if developers need money injection from outside. Value of new IP increases with time or shrink, depends how IP sold on the market. Fallout is well established franchise.

Most third party exclusives barely move the needle. Unless you can land COD, GTA, BF or FIFA. You really aren't doing much.

And even with those you'd effectively be burying a franchise for an installment considering worldwide rations of PS4/xbox sales.

All it takes is some CEO that hates a franchise though. ;)

DOOM is a good candidate. The franchise is out of the market with a new game for a long time, pretty sure Bethesda would like to make a deal.

It's more likely than Fallout but still pretty damn unlikely. Why are you so insistent on bringing up third party games that MS might by exclusive rights for? It's like you want that to happen. Do you want MS to pay money for the explicit purpose of depriving Playstation gamers of playing a game they would otherwise have access to? Because that's a pretty shitty thing to want.

I know that, but the the person I quoted made it sound like Spencer had to get revenge for the Street Fighter deal. I know it's silly.

Woah, MS lost CoD marketing?

That's huge if true, especially right as BO3 is about to come out. We will find out for sure next week, right?

As a gamer I don't like when people are privated to play a game, but this is a sales thread and we are talking about prospects for Sony and Microsoft.

One interesting thing to keep note of is that while in the 360 era Bethesda made exclusive deals frequently with MS in terms of marketing and timed DLC, so far this generation they joined with Sony for the exclusive marketing for the console version of Elder Scrolls Online. It is even getting the exclusive beta.

I find that intriguing.

Wait, what? You think that MS will shrink Xbone size just because to help sales? I think it won't happen anytime soon. Componets in Xbone are bigger problem. PS4 has and advantage here.

I'd bank on them releasing a smaller version without HDMI in and kinect compatibility before too long. Cutting both would allow them to save money on manufacturing and help ensure moderate profit margins going forward.

The PS4 is already pretty damn slim so I'm not really seeing a smaller revision in the immediate future. The XB1, however, is monstrous and could easily be reduced in size with the elimination of a few of the unnecessary parts.

I doubt HDMI in adds much to the BOM and removing it would further segment the base, I don't see that happening. Same with the Kinect input as they still seem quite adamant that Kinect isn't dead.

Yes. If not then what's the point in even making it?

I think it will happen sooner than it did last gen simply because of MS wanting to catch up in sales as well as complaints about the system's size (which I'm honestly fine with to be honest since I haven't had any problems with my Xbox One -- I had to send my old Xbox 360 in every year from 2006-2010 due to overheating issues).

How much has Super Circuit sold. I remember hearing a 5 million and something number, but that may have been from Polygon's thing, which used chartzzz lol.

But if the range is in 5 or 6 milion, MK8 could surpass it.Considering the GBA's install base, it's at least something.

They say one thing, they know another.

Kinect failing has hit their projections hard.

They were going to profit from TV ads, targeted ads using data from Kinect, Kinect games etc. Must be a hole worth a few billion somewhere. Add in that the box itself has components they put in there to support Kinect...and they are selling the box at a loss (especially in the UK) then Kinect is a massive massive failure and loss for them.

Look at their original Xbox announcement. Cut out the sections that involve Kinect in some way. There isn't much left.

Now think about all the teams they put together to make Kinect 'experiences'. Wasted time for them.

I agree that Xbox One will more likely receive a hardware revision first because is too big, has unnecessary fetures (like HDMI in) and Microsoft needs to improve sales.

I believe a Xbox One Slim will be very well received if the price is right.

Because maybe technology going forward and not because sales are bad???? Look the Apple instead. Iphone is selling well, but how technology goind forward, component is getting smaller. So, the size of the phone also.

"Catch up" has nothing to do with that. If technology permits to shrink Xbone, MS will do it. You can't force that! But that's not the case.

Well, MS is releasing an official TV tuner in North America soon (for antenna users). I could see that possibly causing future Xbox One models to not have HDMI In.

There's also a kinect adapter for PC that hooks into USB so I guess it's possible for the kinect port to be removed in a future Xbox One model too.

5.91m is the official shipment number. Mario Kart 8 is at 4.77m (end of 2014)

Why especially in the UK? If anything, they are probably still profiting in the UK.

What are you talking about? What do you mean "it's not the case"?

And yes, a new model would indeed help sales since it would sell to current Xbox One owners as well as people who don't have one already.

Making Doom exclusive would be a huge dick move by Bethesda with them promising early beta access with Wolfenstein.

You can buy a console for £229 if you want. They offered absolutely huge retail discounts at Christmas. They paid for all those bundled games. The UK has had more price cuts than any other territory.

Remember, it wasn't the retailers saying 'xxx off an Xbox' it was Xbox saying 'we'll give you xxx off of the stock price, push this thing like mad'.

They are selling the console for £300 officially, which is £250 before VAT or $373

Store discounts have almost nothing to do with MS in the UK 99% of the time. Stores take a loss on the hardware and make it back elsewhere. It's not MS that's losing out there, they already have the stores money from when they sold them the console in the first place. What those stores sell it for after that has nothing to do with MS.

Not based on conversations I had around Xmas. Microsoft was cutting the price retailers paid massively to get the stock out there and sold. They are still doing it now.

When they were giving away a cheap box and a load of free games, where were the retailers getting their money from? Not more games. People were getting a cheap Xbox and 4 free games in some cases.

Retailers were probably complaining that their warehouses were overstocked with Xbox Ones. Microsoft offered them a lot of money off to make up for that fact and push more current consoles and bundles.

Microsoft's entire model requires are large userbase to be profitable. XBL subs, ads, revenue from publishers etc.

Well, around xmas I'm sure MS played their part in sales, but 99% of the time they have almost nothing to do with it. The UK just never sticks to RRP and MS isn't gonna take a loss when stores will do it anyways, hence why you can walk into ASDA or Tesco and pick up games at like 30% off RRP on day 1 and get it even cheaper on amazon or online pre order sales.

http://simplygames.com/p/xbox-one-console-xbox-one

Are you referring to this deal for the £229 console? Because I can near guarantee you MS has nothing to do with that sale, I mean, if they were going to step in and offer sales they'd do it at like GAME not some random website that probably doesn't even move 5% of the consoles that GAME do.
