This came up on my FB timeline. I really don't know what to say:

Awesome.

Having recently beaten Shenmue, for the first time in 10+ years, it's remarkable how intricate of a game it still is. It is in many ways a more believable game world than any open world game since. I don't think any of the modern games do the NPCs and their schedules to the detail of Shenmue. I really wish we could get a game with the size of Shenmue but the budget and development time of a GTA. I can't even imagine the depth.

And today is already the 7th biggest day for funding, so it's nice to see some momentum into the Holiday weekend here in the US.

I saw that. I just took it to mean that with that stretch goal we'll get a free Battle that's better than ever before. I wouldn't assume that means a form of free battle is already in, not until they explicitly say it.
well we'll see how it goes.

i think $6 million is a very probably goal right now anyway. if we can keep the funding in the 80k region daily until the last few days we should be fine.

I upped my pledge to $60 for that physical PS4 copy. A little more than I wanted to spend but honestly I'll be kicking myself in the ass for not grabbing that backer-only copy.

Pretty amazing how, in less than 24 hours, the number of PS4 physical backers outnumbers those who have pledged for the PC physical tier over two weeks.

I got the itch to try out Unreal Engine 4 after reading that it's free. I've never made a game before, but UE4 is seriously fun to mess around in. Check out what I made within two hours of installing it (including time in tutorials):

It's like you're playing a hardcore version of The Sims build mode. I can't wait to dig deeper and maybe even see if I can actually do any coding.

Upped to $60 for physical yet I still haven't played the games in the series. I'm a sucker for hype. Going to have to play them on emulators at some point, or hopefully there'll be remasters announced.

i think remasters are pretty much a cert at this point. sega must be looking at the kickstarter and thinking of ways to capitalise. i'd say we'll either see them next year or in 2017.

that said, don't let that stop you trying them before then.

You know what I love about this Kickstarter? Every dollar pledged is a middle-finger to all the assholes who laughed at hopeful Shenmue fans for years. All the internet shitlords who try so hard to be snarky and cool have to choke on the crow they're eating now that Shenmue 3 is real and happening. I love that. I love that so much. They delighted in mocking the shit out of Shenmue fans for years and now they can all suck a fat dick and find something else to go be a shithead about.

Fuckin Shenmue, people! I am so glad we get to see Ryo out in the world once more. I still can't quite get over the fact that it's happening. That E3 high has really stuck with me!

I know it's looking far out, but if we can fund these new features including character perspective and maybe even the advanced free battle, is that likely to make Shenmue 4 more cost effective as much of the ground work will be done?

Hoping they create à $100 tier specifically mentioning the ps4 disc, since they cant update the tiers and there still being confusion whether higher tiers could also get the physical ps4 version.

The $29 tier is slowly losing backers to higher tiers, they really needed to have the physical ps4 version from the beginning. Bloodstained has less than 1/3 of its backers at the $28 tier, Shenmue 3 more than 1/2.

Here is hoping so. I mean it of course is contingent on how successful Shenmue III is.

Bloodstained was also available on a lot more platforms. I imagine many who don't own a PS4 are probably going with the digital PC version rather than physical.

Higher priced tiers will be asked what physical version they want. So people that pay $100+ will be able to get the PS4 physical version.

He knows that but if you look at the KS side of things you wouldn't know, since the KS rewards themselves cannot be updated.

I want to take this opportunity to say that it's BS that Suzuki isn't planning on finishing the story in part 3. I mean, yes, by all means, leave room for sequels if you want, but most of us wanted closure. Anyways, end rant.

Completely disagree. I as a long term fan am personally extremely happy Suzuki is not compromising his original vision by trying to shoehorn and cram remaining chapters into Shenmue III.

It's clear from interviews and what he's said, Suzuki is committed to his original vision and trying to stay as true to that as possible. I for one am thankful.

cramming the whole story into one last game would be more bullshit if you ask me.

So basically you want a game that will never be possible with 10 million dollars..

We already know that based on what Yu Suzuki has said, the story for Shenmue goes beyond just some final fight in rural China, but also involves Ryo eventually returning to Japan. And if he's returning to Japan, there'll probably be Shenmue 2 locations involved as well.

A closure of the Shenmue story, at minimum will have all the locations from Shenmue 1/2/3 revisited and rebuilt. 3 games worth of assets. Minimum.

For Suzuki to close the story in 3 ( remember that he's also limited by the assets he has to make ), he has to drastically rewrite the story and come up with some convoluted reason for every villain to come to the rural village where Ryo is at, end the fight, and close the story.

I don't think it was ever meant to end with the third game. Even in the GDC, he referenced the story being split into 4 major themes.

That was when it comes originally Virtual Fighter RPG. Although it's clear the Shenmue games seem to be working from the same basic framework.

Suzuki on Twitter yesterday that the games are more than 11 Chapters with branching storyline (possibly up to 16 chapters). Looking at original art-work there is no way he could finish the story in Shenmue 3 without cutting huge swaths of content.

I know that, I'm talking about lower tiers who might upgrade to $100 and above if it explicitly said you were getting à ps4 physical version.

So you'd rather have a heavily butchered and edited story? Not me, especially when I believe there is potential here for the story to continue. Hell, maybe they Kickstart again. I would be perfectly fine with that. Or maybe Sega steps up...

I can understand the disappointment but I'm happy he's sticking to his vision. He's waited 14 years for the next game, happy he's trying to do all he can to not compromise the story.

Yeah I later realize that, sorry about that.

The KS is really gaining some speed again isnt it? im pretty sure we can get the 5 mil at the end, that would be pretty sweet. 10 is the dream but i dont think that will happen.

Yes, i thought this was pretty common knowledge? i remember playing 2 when it came out on DC and i knew this back then also.

We all want closure. But we also don't want the story to feel rushed. Shenmue is a slow paced game, both in its gameplay and in its story. It's part of what makes the game so great to explore and discover. The slow build-up.

Shenmue 3 will be more successful than the first two. It's coming out on a console that is very successful, and on Steam. So it's pretty much certain to sell [relatively] well and warrant a Shenmue 4.

So I don't think fans should be worried about getting closure or not. A Shenmue 4 is pretty much certain to happen at this point.

Am I the only one who kind of wishes the milestones were prioritized differently? The battle system upgrades I'm not so interested in as much as expanded areas...unless there's going to be a lot more fighting than previous games.

Yu-san hinted at Ryo going against the Chi You Men in Shenmue 3. So I think it's fair to assume there'll be a lot of fighting. ;)

I hope this game gets made on time. I hope there's good, playable remasters from Sega beforehand and ultimately I hope Shenmue 3 at least sells enough copies outside of the Kickstarter to justify making more games. Imagine if some day we end up getting a regular Shenmue Chapter every couple of years until the full, no compromises, vision for the Shenmue story is completed by Yu Suzuki.

CAN YOU IMAGINE IT...?! WHY NOT TRY, WE NEVER THOUGHT WE'D GET THIS FAR! :D

I actually hate the milestone priorities. Instead of putting all the money into one village, I wish the expansions were spread throughout each of the villages evenly as more money comes in.

No idea why they did that. Maybe if they explained their impact to the whole it would. Like say location 1 is the main location and so on.

Isn't Baisha Shenhua's village? The story seems to be focused on developing Ryo and Shenhua's relationship, with the warring kingdoms battle and missions taking place in Baisha. Notice the other villages don't have any battle events or mission stretch goals, so they're probably not as high priority.
