Yeah, I disagree with a lot of this list. Not surprising though, right? Such lists essentially exist for people to disagree with them.

HOWEVER, I am perplexed by the series entries that they picked to represent certain series (MGSV and FFXII are the best entries of their series? Really?)--makes me question the whole enterprise more than the simple fact that our top 10s are different

I would argue that MGS V has not just the best gameplay in the series, but probably the best stealth sandbox gameplay ever. It's possibility space: the game.

But why not, you know, read the write-up that accompanies the number in a list?

I mean, Edge are as much entitled to their opinion as anybody and at least they took the effort to explain their choices in great detail.

In the top 20, I've completed... Dark Souls, Half Life 2, SMG2, OoT, Bayonetta, Portal, SM64. I've played but not beaten GTA5, TLOU, Tetris, RE4, Minecraft, RDR, SMW, USF4, MK8, AW.

I've probably completed 20-30 games total on that list (if that). So many games that can't be beaten (like SF4 & MK8), and so many games I've tried to play but I didn't like (TLOU/ICO/Halo).

the weird thing is how inconsistent the iterative versions selected on this list are.

there's a few here. for example:

-LBP3 being the representation for the series even though it is probably the most maligned entry.

-same thing above goes for R-Type Final (I think it was the only "classic" shooter on this list fwiw)

-Puyo Puyo being selected over all other versions of the game. Are you telling me that regular ass Puyo Puyo is the best? Tsu, among many other newer versions, shits all over it.

-Tetris always gets the nod but, again, same with Puyo Puyo. Original versions of Tetris have been pretty much rendered obsolete by Grand Master or even the Nintendo DS version.

I often get the impression that these lists like to pay tribute to classic games because their "classic" without really understanding the series history, much less their high or low points.

This is a really, really, really weird list. I get that lists are just about subjective taste, but still. Reading these lists makes me wonder if people even remember all the games they've played. I mean, just looking through it, Driveclub made it into the Top 100? I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game, but I'm shocked it's in the list. I'm even more shocked that there's only one Final Fantasy and that it's 12. 12 is a fine game, but the only game in the series deserving recognition? SoTN being outside of the Top 25 is a travesty of taste frankly, same for Earthbound. The Stanley Parable wouldn't even make my list. Nidhogg and Drop 7 stands out as what seem like random inclusions. FE: A's high-ish ranking is weird to me, again, the only representative of that series? I enjoyed MK8 and MGSV, but top 20 games of all time?

The last four stand out as particularly weird because they almost seem like just a "hottest gaming pop culture" games. I mean, I could argue for their inclusion, but it does seem a little odd.

Because they don't agree with it. I wonder how many people taking shots at this list are actually gonna read the write-ups. I mean, my top 100 would be very different (though Bloodborne and Dark Souls would be way up), but I'm still super interested in reading the actual essays.

I don't know who the writers are, but if it's of the calibre of Simon Parkin, it's pretty much a must-read.

It weird because its almost as if they could only pick one from each release in a franchise but then decide not to do that in the case of Mario and Zelda.

And when they picked the one game from the franchise its like they went for the one in general which was most objectively better by today standards (weighted toward the newest iteration) and not what had the biggest impact, like MGS1 and FFVII are not included.

Which makes me surprised they didn't pick Portal 2 instead by that logic. This is just a bit all over the place...

I've got to agree. I rate Spec Ops roughly on par with Binary Domain. Enjoyed them both but top 100 of all time? Hardly!

Can't get over Little Big Planet 3 being on there, and I love Little Big Planet. Any other version I could have definitely argued for over 3

What I especially like about this list is that it finally recognizes that ALLTP and Super Metroid are great games, but maybe they don't deserve to be in the top 10 of all time.

Spelunky and Destiny both deserve a place on the list, and I'm happy with their rank as well.
