Musicians that are awful in their live performances.

Saw Queens of the Stone Age twice, Josh was out of breath 4 songs into the performance.

I've seen them 4 times, they killed it each time. They were third on the bill one of those times (behind RHCP and Foo Fighters), they absolutely stole the show. Amazing live act.

Don't know if it was just that night, but Queens of the Stone Age had no stage presence at all. They pretty much just played their songs back to back, identically to the studio versions.

Also the crowd was shitty, just standing around.

Sisters of Mercy. They pipe in so much smoke you can't even see the band but for the vaguest of silhouettes, they don't move much, and when I saw them the sound was super muddy on top of that (that may have been a venue problem and not the bands fault though)

I don't know how you could go to a Calvin Harris show and then criticize any actual musicians show lol. Future and Young Thug and Ear Drummers are fucking terrible ass live performers. Pretty much any rapper that still uses a hype man fuck em.

The Chilis were awful when I saw them, was a stadium gig but still

Always been put off of seeing Interpol becaause of what I've seen and heard in recordings

Mars Volta was so bad opening for the RHCP that thousands of people got up and left the stadium. It was like all band members were playing different terrible, ear bleeding songs. It was one of the worst noises I've ever heard.

30 Seconds To Mars - Granted, the music was good but that egomaniac Jared Leto would just stop between songs to revel in his own magnificence and fans of the band just ate that shit up.

He probably did his Joker voice too, that maniac!

As opposed to the other thread, let's name all the bands/acts that plain suck when they play live.

Let's start with A Day to Remember, it's like the singer is bored/sleepy/doesn't give a shit about his own songs, no power in the singing. Although they have some good acoustic shows.

Saw them live this year, they were awesome, cannot comprehend.

I saw the Pixies recently and was so disappointed at their lack of enthusiasm and energy. They never once interacted with the crowd - just played song after song then stopped.

I agree with the lack of banter, but I saw them a few months back and they were fantastic. Closed with Debaser too.

Mac Demarco. He's not bad..... Its just that he sounds more like a cheezy jam band live and he attracts the biggest dbags. But i'm a fan so I go see him when he's in town anyway.

I would have to say Linkin Park.. well at least early Linkin Park as I don't know how they sound now live. But man when they first came out they sucked live. Chester would start screaming and it would sound like screeching and you really couldn't here the other guy sing.

The Killers
Back when Hot Fuss was the all over the place, the only member of the band who seemed interested in being on stage was the drummer.

Hearing modern day Axl Rose & 'Friends' perform GnR tunes live often leads to disappointment.

Just play Burnout Paradise instead.
HEY HEY YOU YOU

Saw them in London not too long ago and they were phenomenal, so maybe it's the venue/set-up on that one.

I went to a My Chemical Romance gig shortly after Danger Days came out and that was pretty awful.

Gerard Way did a solo set at Boston Calling back in May and it was absolutely terrible. Guess he's pretty consistent.

MGMT. - Absolutely awful performance. Out of key, messing up lyrics...terrible.

The Police - saw them during one of their first reunion shows and Sting and Stuart Copeland were arguing the entire time. They sloppily rushed through the hit songs and then left the stage with no announcement. Atrocious.

*Scott Stapp
The rest of the band is great live. Scott Stapp is just nuts.

In that same type of thing, Axl Rose also sucks live. The rest of GnR was great, but Axl was trash.

Yeah the band are good live, especially Mark Tremonti, Stapp is just a fucking mess.

To be fair their are lots of Pop artists that kill it, and plenty of everything else that sounds good in the studio but blows live. I saw Mars Volta open for red hot chilli peppers. I was so pumped but by the end I wanted to put their poor singer out of his misery. It was awful and sooooo off pitch. He squealed like a pig. Kind of surprised me cause in the studio he sounded ok. The rest of the bad was actually mediocre. There was no cohesion. They all sounded like they never jammed together before. Such a let down.
To be fair, when The Mars Volta opens for a band, they are god awful. But when they headline, it's the best show ever.

I love Jack White and Damon Albarn, but they just aren't good live.

Jack White is excellent. Especially back in his White Stripe days. His worst show is better than most.

My pics in no particular order
  • Rob Van Winkle aka Vanilla Ice
  • The Offspring
  • Weezer
  • Modest Mouse
  • Blink 182

I love Marnie Stern, but I'm not sure if I've ever listened to a good live performance from her. Her voice doesn't work for it.

I'll throw in here that Brand New and Thrice are two of the best live bands I've ever seen.

Thrice especially. Such a tight and focused live performance that makes their music sound arguably better than on record.

Edit: Just saw this post above me:
Thrice. So lifeless.
What? I can't even. Inside or Outside venue?

Well both david guetta and avicii are terrible anyways, live or not...

Honestly I think they have some decent songs, nothing amazing or anything but fun songs to get drunk and dance to. They could pull off a decent set with them if they were even slightly good at "DJing".

People mentioning Blink should check them out with Matt Skiba on guitar and vocals. Quite an improvement since the guy is actually talented.

Brent Hinds from Mastodon can't sing live. He sounds like a nasally cartoon character.

And Dave Mustaine from Megadeth can't sing for shit, live or on record.

(I love them)

You're linking a performance from 2003, which I saw them on that tour when they opened up for Múm. It was an incredible show that was full of raw energy. I've been a fan ever since. This is also during the Here Comes The Indian era, which was extremely experimental folk music. Not sure what you're expecting.

Their most recent shows are on point.

Of people I've a seen that sucked hmmm

Counting Crowes
Garbage
Stone Temple Pilots
Less Than Jake
Ozzy

To be fair everyone has a off night. Some were at bad/low points in their careers. Plus some bands just don't work as well as others at certain venues.

Im sure Ive seen threads here on Gaf talking about how terrible Axl/GnR is these days in a live setting.
I remember years ago, when Barry White came to Australia, there was a bit of an outcry over how bad his live performance was. His vocals were bad and he kept his back to some members of the audience for the whole performance, IIRC.
The only band I ever saw live was The Offspring and they were great.

I haven't seen many bands live, but Circa Survive opened for Coheed and Cambria, and Anthony Green was very pitchy and off-key for a good portion of their songs, but he kind of "loses himself" in the performance and almost fell off the stage, so his wild antics and energy kind of saved it.

Coheed on the other hand is fucking amazing and always kill it. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth is one of the most audience-participatory, anthemic, go-crazy songs of all time.
