SCE Executive Vice President: Possible enhanced version PS4, no first party for Vita

A PS4 with better wifi could be a thing that could happen. Other than that it should just be about making the console smaller and cheaper.

Well, it's pretty obviously that they will release a PS4 version with Ultra HD Blu-ray support.

But there is no need for releasing a faster PS4 if all your opponents are weaker or Nintendo.

I suspect they've discussed PS4.5 because PS4 isn't enough to get a full experience on VR. I hope a PS4.5 would be more than just PS4 games at 1080p60.

If this is the case, they should have just done the extra processing in the headset itself.

Higher performance PS4? What, like a mid-gen add on?

If MS released something like this in 2017 it would be DOA. The XBO's problem was not really the power gap; it was that MS lied about it and tried to push draconian DRM alongside a peripheral most early buyers were not interested in. They are just gaining back some lost ground with consumers in terms of faith in the product and brand, but I don't expect most of it to be repaired until late 2016 at the earliest. And then, just as XBO is doing well, they'll fragment the userbase again?

Never mind the fact the system just doesn't have an audience outside of the US and UK; if an enhanced XBO were released it'd just add confusion. XBO is not doing bad or good enough to warrant an upgrade after just four years out. And by 2018 the XBO-2 would logically be justified so why waste time with a stopgap?

The DRM was definitely part of it, but the real thing that did in the XB1 at release was its lack of power and price. It was simply a nonstarter to come out with a less powerful more expensive console in an age where exclusives have much less influence due to third party games becoming more popular.

Such a product would hardly be DOA. I picture it coming out around back-to-school time and being offered up as a console/PC hybrid. It could be packaged with an Office 365 subscription that lasts for the school year to sweeten the pot. If it only allowed app store apps to be installed, such a product could be sold at or below cost because MS would make up sales through the app store.

Even without that PC/console hybrid idea, an improved version of the XB1 console would still sell extremely well. Remember that 360 came out only 4 years after the original Xbox was released. A 2017 release would be 4 years after the release of the XB1. For that reason alone I'm pretty confident it'll happen by 2017. I'm pushing that up next year based on a hunch and the fact that MS will want to get a jump on Sony and head off the good press it will get from PlayStation VR.

PS3 was bleeding edge, they had to take 7 years to recoup on that monster. PS4 was built to last 5 years max. We're already nearing mid-cycle for this gen.

You are saying 2018?

Not happening.

Vita's been getting alot of games lately, first party or not

Yep. We should see 20+ Vita games at the Playstation Experience Conference in December.

Excited to see what shows up in Paris next week as well!

I've wanted a portable console with a ton of indie games for years. Now it looks like we actually have one.

Vita once again being treated like the bastard child that it is. It almost seems like the only reason Sony ever speaks about this platform is to demonstrate just how terrible it is, so that no doubt is left in anyone's mind.

Sounds like a terrible idea, basically giving the finger to earlier adopters of PS4

How in the world would it be giving the finger? The PS4 would be just as supported as before. The only thing that would change would be that an enhanced PS4 could get a bit better FPS/resolution/image quality and would be able to play ports of the more demanding VR games that the PS4 couldn't handle.

The main difference wouldn't be that a new console is released. It'd that full support for the older console would continue while a new console existed.

I'd buy an enhanced ps4. These consoles suck and I don't want to play online games on a pc with a controller just to get creamed. I don't see how this creates as much extra work for devs as some of you think it will. As long as it doesn't split the user base it's win win. I wish this weak ass gen died tomorrow.

It could work, but in a certain way.

The way they could approach this is, enabling full SSHD support, that alone would make loading times faster. On that same PS4 they could add PS1, PS2 chip for backwards compatibility. Maybe add 1gb or 2 of more ram for faster multitasking purposes.

All of what I suggested would simply make this a PS4 for the enthusiasts but of COURSE you would have to pay more. Games would still be the same and run equally on both systems. I know I would buy one of these if it came true.

And while their at it, why not make a bigger case, my ps4 sounds like NASA is trying to launch a rocket.

Doing it this way would NOT split people up.

Semi upgrades every 3 years for a full price is a trend that I don't want consoles to follow.

It's just an unnecesary waste of money for customers and extra headache for developers. Also it can potentially lock games onto one version.

I can't really see them making two different models, one of them being higher performance. Keep things simple for everyone, Sony.

maybe and they don't want to lose being the 3rd party king. If real wonder if it launches side by side with NX.

So much LOL in a single post.

I don't Nintendo is even capable of making a more powerful system these days, not would they dare to launch a $400 box that sits alongside two competitors that will be $300 or less by that time..

I don't understand this attitude. Why would an high-performance PS4 go "against the entire concept" any more than does marketing the PS4 and the PS3 at the same time?

And, what about it would "suck" for PS4 users? I'm a PS4 user and I would love the option of a performance-enhancement. And, if I didn't want to pay for it (or couldn't afford to), I would continue to enjoy my existing PS4, content in the knowledge that others had the opportunity to enjoy the high-performance machine and I may yet some day join them.

What's the downside?

None really, people are just selfish and ignorant.

Well I've been hoping Sony would release a PS4 with a decent wifi adaptor and better build quality all around.

Seems to me like Sony is going backwards compared to the last gen, releasing the cheaped out slim version first.

That's crap. Developers do it all the time on PC and it seems to work out fine. Who is to say the newer games made for "PS4 Black" won't still work on the vanilla ps4?

Your 960 rig with 8 gigs of memory will play the same games as my 980ti rig with 32 gigs of memory. Only difference is my experience will be much richer than yours.

They could very well have games playing at higher or lower "settings" based on your version of PS4.

This also seems to be the way Nintendo is trending, thinking of forward compatibility as well as backwards compatibility and I am glad console makers are going this way. Keeps their boxes from becoming old as shit.

Also I agree with the posters above. It's funny they say this after all the rumors of the NX.

High performance PS4? .... Can be a good response to a powerfull Nintendo NX (If Happens). Huum. This gen is going to be weird.

I can see a model with better wifi and an upgraded bluray drive being released. But a completely separate "enhanced version" in terms of upgraded graphics capability, changed architecture etc, I doubt it.

The only thing I can possibly see happening is if they've tested/designed all ps4s with a higher clockspeed in mind for the CPU and will increase it via a firmware update later (like they did with the PSP), to get some extra juice out of the system.

high performance as in can play 4k blur ray?
Edit: I like the idea of just giving fast SSD access. I'd jump on that.

Being mad that a better version of a console less than two years old potentially coming out is being selfish? It's a gaming console not a cell phone.
Yea its being selfish, especially if the old ps4 works just fine and plays the same shit. I'd definitely call that selfish.

I want a PS* that has PS1/2/3/4/PSP/V capabilities built in (multiple processors), better cooling, better media capabilities, quieter, reads UMD, etc, etc.

It can be a big bastard too, I don't mind, and expensive, but being able to throw any PS software in the drive and play it would be something I think enough people would be interested in to make the project worthwhile. The ultimate Playstation for collectors and oldschool fans.

Doubt it's anything more than an idea they might have had at some point.
But if they start with the phone model I'm done with consoles and I'm going all in on PC

Even if in the end nothing changes i like how in every interview journalists always make questions about vita to sony guys, it means that more people care about Vita than sony wants to think.

About a PS4+... bad idea, developers won't leave the PS4 base to make games working only on the PS4+.

Standard and High performance PS4...

Bring on dat high performance PS4!
and add full, real BC

Real shame regarding the Vita comments, but to be expected. :( I can't imagine 3rd parties caring if 1st party is throwing in the towel. Thank God for indies.

Edit-

I don't think PS4+ would be different enough to have exclusives. Maybe improved textures, and what not? Kinda like the 3DS vs N3DS? (Excluding Xenoblade 3D)

How is it "an unnecessary waste of money for customers"? The console you bought would have the exact same level of support and games as it did before. The only thing that would change is that you'd have the option to buy and enhanced version of the console if 1080p, 60FPS or 4K was really that important to you. Otherwise everything else would remain exactly the same.

For the devs, it'd be no more of a headache than currently supporting the variable graphics settings on the PC. In fact it'd be a lot easier than that because they'd only have to support 2 specifications instead of the variable mix of components that the PC has to deal with.

Ugh I hope we dont need to buy a new PS4 for VR. Sounds like this is not the case though. Im not up for an enhanced PS4. Just wait for PS5.
