Famitsu Survey Results: "Japan's Top 3 Biggest RPG" (Surprised?)

That Dragon Quest at number 1, they really have taste, huh.
Tales of series at number 4, not surprised at all. With all the skits and anime tropes it has. Suikoden at number 9 is kinda understandable though, as the series is kinda dead right now, which sadden me.

you know, honestly besides the top 3 I didn't know how popular each one tends to be in Japan

Didn't expect Mother at all. Since there will probably never be another game they really should do a remake at least

A recent thread on here about JRPGs had a lot of people saying that they didn't really consider Pokemon to be a JRPG even if it is one (and the biggest). I wonder if Pokemon has the same perception over in Japan.

The sample size is really low so it's not really that representative but I don't care because Suikoden made the top 10!

Suikoden VI now please.

I could never understand this. Pokémon is a JRPG through and through.

But aren't they both Megami Tensei? Like Compilation of FFVII and Crystal Chronicles are both FF.

Final Fantasy can be viewed as an umbrella term, there are the mainline games Final Fantsay I-XV, then the Chrystal Chronicles offshoots and Compilations of FFVII, etc etc. All fall under the Final Fantasy umbrella.

MegaTen is the umbrella term for games that fall under the series such as SMT mainline, Devil Survivor, Persona, etc etc. In the NA releases many of the games that fall under MegaTen have SMT in their titles, like the NA release of P3 and P4 were fully titled: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3/4. Persona 5 doesn't have the SMT in it's title, but at this point Persona is the most popular spin off of the MegaTen series.

Surprised that Tales got more votes than Persona.

Everything else is normal more or less.

Dude, Tales of is huge in Japan. I'm more surprised that SMT barely beat Persona. I mean come on, how long did it take for them to put out SMT4.

The real news is SaGa being higher than KH

Yeah, this is surprising as well, I can't even think of the last time when SaGa was relevant. Maybe that Vita game got some people excited.

Japan has seen the light.

You would think Pokemon and Persona would be higher. Maybe Nintendo fans do not gravitate to Famitsu to much, and Persona is more niche than I thought.

Don't sales for the games say otherwise? I distinctly recall Pokemon games outselling the other two in the top 3.

If this was about sales, the list would look very differently. Yo-Kai Watch would be part of it. This is in terms of popularity with the Famitsu readership; it's not like Game Trailers' top 10s are based on sales.

Huh, that result actually was pretty surprising for a few reasons. FF series is so close to DQ, and Persona somehow ranks lower than Tales or mainline SMT. I thought the votes would be like:

1) Dragon Quest - ~500

2) Final Fantasy - ~300

3) Persona - ~250

4) Pokemon - ~200

5) Tales - ~180

6) SMT - ~150

7) Kingdom Hearts - ~120

People don't lump XenoGears, XenoSaga and XenoBlade in the same basket. Even if the director of those is the same, it's kinda like saying Donkey Kong and Mario are the same thing since the're both platformers :V

Not true. There's a reason they keep using the Xeno name. Like I posted earlier the Director of Xenoblade Chronicles X made reference to "Xeno" games.

Xeno probably isn't on there since it's hard to consolidate. I mean technically we can say Xenosaga, Xenoblade, and X are all the same series. But I don't think voting really considered it as such. So it was probably split between Xenoblade and Xenosaga.

Yeah. That's how I view it. It's not an official series but there a strong connections. Xenoblade Chronicles X will solidified it in my view by having a lot of the thematic elements from the earlier games but the gameplay of the original Xenoblade Chronicles.

I thought with the hype of Persona 5 is generating while Pokemon series has been plateauing since X&Y and remakes, Persona might actually get a lot of votes. Maybe 250 for Pokemon, 200 for Persona. I don't know, many other past Famitsu surveys often had Persona 5 competing with FFXV in votes.

Don't get it wrong. Many long-time fans like me are disappointed because of the simplicity, but those are a minority. Pokémon is still going strong and pushing around 10 Million copies per release (outside spinn-offs)

Tales above both Atlus series?

Tales series are like the Assassins Creed one in the J-RPG genre. Boring, charmless and repetitive.

Persona has a pretty dedicated base but it's still niche compared to bigger stuff.
