Steam reaches 12.5 million concurrent users EDIT: no it doesn't, actually 11.1m

Edit: If you read the first page, there's some uncertainty about the accuracy of these numbers.

I believe the last time we had a thread about this was in June, with 10 million.

It's pretty interesting to compare to players on the top games now to then:

The growth in CS:GO over just 5 months is pretty insane. Also, GTAV is very stable which is surprising for a game I'd have pictured as still primarily driven by single player appeal.

Yeah that's nuts. It's funny how the 90 percent of players are playing two games that I have never played (and don't really have an interest)

PC gaming is dying..... :p good to see though. top 2 were expected and nice to see 1.6 still has people playing it.

Ehh, should have waited with this thread. This has happened before (with this number not so long ago, and with me and 9m when I made a thread about it :p). Look at that spike. Not natural.

GTA Online is huge, like crazy huge. These numbers aren't surprising at all.

Do we have any official clarification from Valve on how many of those users are grandmothers who have unwittingly installed Steam?
/s , like obviously

You'd have to install steam, create an account and download and launch a game to be counted.

EDIT: didn't see the /s

How big are Xbox and Playstation? I know they are bigger than Steam but I'm not sure on the platform numbers.
In concurrent numbers? Likely much smaller.

Microsoft recently released a number of 39 million active XBL users, the last numbers on active users we got from Valve were 125 million, and Steamspy currently estimates 141 million.

So does this number include steam users like me who just have it open and logged in because my computer does that automatically when turned on, but haven't actually played a steam game in a long time?

Given the numbers dropped off so fast on that list in the OP, I imagine it must do.

A paid game with nearly as much players as dota, and valve still doesnt make a damn TI for it.

Edit:
I never expected gta 5 to be that popular after months of launch.

It does look strange, but I assumed it was related to the sporadic outages, and that those would always result in under- rather than overreporting.

I don't really expect errors to cause the number to increase, but then again I don't know how exactly their stat system works.

Then again, the jump from yesterday is ~2 million, and that's a lot.
I would expect a significant jump due to the combination of the sale and weekend effects, but probably not that much.

Up until CS:GO started gaining momentum, 1.6 stubbornly remained the most popular FPS on Steam. Looks like CS:GO finally won over most of the 1.6 crowd and pulled in the Source crowd as well.

Will Fallout 4 finally end Skyrim's top 12 streak? It's still amazing how a single player game continues to have that many players.

Steam is probably bigger than both combined with 141 million active accounts according to Steamspy. What are PS4 and XO combined sales of systems? A little below 50 million? Even if every system owner had two accounts, they wouldn't get close to Steam (are we counting last gen and handhelds as well, the numbers will look better though).

How many is on concurrently is difficult to say, since MS and Sony don't report those numbers.

There are a few other factors to consider such as higher likelihood of PCs being left on / used for other things with steam idling in the background.

But regardless, its a much higher number than on consoles even if its kind of an apples and oranges statistic.

Why not?

It's one of the biggest games of all time, is currently on it's first real sale since release, has a huge singleplayer portion and a super popular online multiplayer.

I didn't bother posting this since I am almost certain it is wrong. Each time a new increase it is seen this past month, the graph looks like there is something wrong. The reported number doesn't match the graph either. Every other time the graph is represented as a mostly smooth line.

amazing game but also on sale for like 50 cents :p that also helps :p

LOL yup. I keep hearing good things, so how could I not grab it for under $1?

Also, it's crazy to see that TF2 has lingered in the top 3 since I've installed Steam years ago. That's a dedicated player base.

Maybe, maybe not. 12.5k people are still playing New Vegas concurrently, and that game has less than half of Skyrim's sales on Steam.

EDIT: There are five Total War games in the top 100 concurrent players list. Some of which are close to 10 years old. PC fanbases are die-hard.

I'm getting more convinced there has to be some overreporting in these numbers.
Last weekend went up to ~11 million, and it makes sense for a sale to push that quite a bit further, but not to the tune of 1.5 million.

So it's probably closer to 11.5, which is of course still a new record and doesn't change the overall idea much.

Yeah, there's clearly something wrong with the graph, but as I said I thought it would be due to outages resulting in under- rather than overreporting. However, thinking about the numbers again as per the above it doesn't seem that way.

So yeah, just imagine the thread is about reaching 11.5 million concurrent users :p

http://steamcharts.com/

only shows 11.9m

meanwhile on Steam it dropped down to 11.2m

Yep.

I don't pay much attention to these things, but the Dreamhack CS:GO tourney is underway at the moment, which may at least partially explain the bump.

Edit: Oh, right, the numbers don't add up. ;)

Yes its a great game but with many online games on Pc it is to be expected to lose its popularity a little at least in the multiplayer part.
Well now that I see the constant updates surely helped.

No they are not steam has over 120 million active account.

Active account is: Once a month on steam + bought a game.

Valve changed the definition. An active account is now any account that owns a game or has been online in the past 90 days, rather than any account that owns a game and has been online in the past month. I lost access to my original account almost a decade ago but it's now considered "active", which is ridiculous.

I assume the change is to account for those who just play F2P games, but what Valve should have done is dropped the game ownership element entirely and just bumped up the online activity half to 90 days.

Probably, but I'd wait and see on Sunday for perhaps a more accurate look at it. Sunday is generally the peak for the week
