[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I loved that Han and Leia named their kid Ben, it was the only OT-related moment that had any real weight for me. Seems particularly meaningful for Han.

Phasma struck me as sequel bait. Mildly established now, probably used as a secondary antagonist in the second film thanks to motivations set in the first.

I'm a little crabby with the marketing there because I was excited to see her play a role other than a causal convenient extra.

The marketing sold a total bill of goods. That shot of the Knights of Ren, playing like Phasma is anything other than literal trash, making Kylo out as a seriously competent villain (the film itself re-sells this with his first appearance), giving Finn a light saber in trailers.

I finally got to see it this morning and while I really enjoyed it, I didn't expect a remake. Apparently, others thought the same thing. I'm not a big fan of episode 6 so this took it's place but I hope episode 8 really changes things up.

Mary Sue complaints are informed by sexism and perhaps a touch of misunderstanding of the term.

Get fucked.
There are a lot of substantive posts you could dig into (try mine) to prove your case. Complaining about flimsy writing for a female character could easily be seen as a feminist stance to take. I am a feminist, politically, so blanket statements like yours don't hold much weight, to me. I'd also advise calming down. I usually log out before deciding to post things like "get fucked" towards other people.

If we get 8 and 9 without Phasma getting her due, I agree. For now I just don't know yet. It's also possible a lot was cut.

What could even be cut that would prompt Abrams to actually mean it when he said she was his favorite character?

Nah, grade A trolling is what it was, and Rian Johnson as far as I know is doing whatever he wants now, so whatever ends up happening has no relevance on the movie we have at this point in time.

As for the big bad guy... Spoke? Snoke? Snope? Ermm....no thoughts just yet. Is he really that fucking big, or is that just the skew of the holoprojector?

y'know what my issue was with his presentation? it had the same slow movement people use to give big things a sense of weight and presence when, assuming he is regular sized, he should move more swiftly.

anyway, loved the film, just wonderful. makes me sad how bad the prequel trilogy is.

This one I really can get behind. Good theory, and a very sound one. But J. J. should have included this in his film, as it would have made me sympathy with him much more. Now he is just a whiny brat..

Very interesting. When Rey touches the saber we get a full vision of her in a corridor, then she's outside in the rain, See's Ren Kill a guard or Jedi maybe? Then she see's the knights, then she gets a vision of her on Jakku and the ship leaving. Then we get the forest scene.

What if these were HER memories. What if she witnessed it all in some capacity?

Again to your last sentence. I think we'll get that exposition in some form in Episode 8. Either from Luke telling Rey or from Ren's training with Snoke.

I can't see the future jett! And last I heard about 20 minutes was cut before theatrical release. I don't have a source on that so I won't mind if its taken with a grain of salt. Maybe she did have a bigger role and most was cut. The movie is already one of the longest of the series.

I remember there was a thread about a store that sold a Star Wars: TFA related action figure or product before they were supposed to and people were getting in trouble for posting it on Facebook and stuff since it apparently was a spoiler related thing.

Does anyone know what it was? I never looked at the picture because I didn't want to be potentially spoiled.

The main issue with the lightsaber fights was imo the camera work.

Definitely agree with this, especially in AotC which is incredibly bland except for the one sequence that everyone makes fun of recently with Anakin and Dooku casting lights on each other's faces with their sabers. I thought that was a clever way to get around Christopher Lee's physical limitations while showing a visually interesting clash.

If they go the Empire route and keep Finn and Rey mostly apart with two divergent storylines then you have 2 adversaries now. Phasma can hunt Finn, Kylo can hunt Rey. Man vs woman vs man vs woman. Its like poetry.

I'm really afraid they're going to turn Kylo into a cyborg in the sequel. Snoke was talking about "completing his training" after Rey sliced off his hand and wounded his face.

Kylo's best moments in this film were all when he had his mask off.

Watching the Red Letter review reminded me that Obi-wan and Anakin were swinging on ropes during the final battle of III... I need to rethink where I rank this movie... jesus...

Surely Force Ghost Obi-Wan had the time to talk with Leia at least once. Heck, for all we know, Leia could've dealt with Ben before ANH, no?

That happened for like 2.343 seconds. COME ON!

I always took that as Anakin and Obiwan being so in tune with the Force and knowing each other so well that they were both able to anticipate eachother's moves, so they went so far with it that their blades don't even touch. Not sure if that really makes sense but that was my immeadite reaction to it.

Been trying to read through the original spoiler thread but fuck me :lol, it's cringeworthy. So many people moaning about irrelevant things.

Glad so many enjoyed it, cool to those that didn't. But man, constantly wishing things to be something they're not is no way to live. Spoiler and exposition culture all up in this bitch. I'm out for now. All in for Rogue One.

There are a lot of comments I've noticed that have complaints about Rey that have no basis and seem to be made just because the main character of this new trilogy is a female. I've seen comments about Finn and Rey's relationship and people not wanting them to be together because it's an interracial couple. Not everyone is saying this shit, but it's out there.

Episode VIII wishlist for Finn
- Bros out with Poe for a lot if not most of the film
- Poe teaches him how to fly... with less than desirable levels of success
- Finn is interested in finding out where he comes from and tries to find First Order archives
- Is hunted down by Phasma
- Phasma whoops his and Poe's asses but he manages to get the upperhand, maybe through using the Force
- Phasma is forced to yield information on where he comes from and lives
- We find out Finn comes from an ordinary family of farmers or whatever that are living peacefully on some backwater rock
- Finn never actually meets with them, merely watching from afar decides to protect them by committing to the Resistance and/or becoming a Jedi

Only for Han, actually. Leia never even met Kenobi?
Ben clearly used the Jedi Mind Trick from beyond the grave to have his name live on.

I was gonna say JJ wanted to test the waters of the fanbase before doing anything drastic. However, he's not the director of the next film so now I'm a little concerned.

This is reasonable and sensible and I like it.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Phasma will depend on competency of the writers with intentions of a three movie arc. Establishing a small but distinct role character in an early film to expand in a later film is sensible and may be Phasma's arc. Given the destruction of Death Star 3.0 her survival could make for an interesting antagonist against Finn who she has an established grudge. It's disappointing now but could work fine long term.

If the writers are pissing in the wind and don't really give a fuck then Phasma is currently a bunch of tiny chrome pieces floating around in space.

And just because someone is disapointed by the obvious lack of disposition and explanation he is sexist or racist?

Please, note the use of modifier "casual" in the initial post and the use of "informed by" in the subsequent explanatory post for the cheap seats.

Perhaps I should add #notallcritics.

Count Dookake: Just remember: Anger leads to something, something leads to something, something leads to whatever -- THE DARK SIDE. So yeah. A bit angry, there.

Lol. There is no anger. Only amusement at how each subsequent protest appears to solidify my initial observation. #notallrebuttals

Thumbs up to the folks who get it.

I'd rather Finn not find his past, like he can search and hit a dead end. Have the film make him define himself by who he wants to be, not where he's from.

You know this whole Rey taking out Kylo too easy is a bunch of bullshit.

Dude was shot by a bowcaster which sent stormtroopers flying in scenes before. I feel like people are downplaying this fact. Had he not been shot and emotionally wrecked I'm sure it would have been a much different fight.

I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with the haters.

Did he get his hand cut off ? I haven't got my second screening yet. I mostly remember he got a few slight cuts and bruises and a scar on his face.

If anything, Kylo Ren's evolution will be what i'll be paying the most attention to since he's my favourite character so far. My only hope is that they don't go just classic redemption with him being just a lackey/SS officier all the way in film 8 like darth vader. I kinda want to see him go against the odds and grow in his own thing, as well as Rey not just becoming Luke 2.0

I loved that Han and Leia named their kid Ben, it was the only OT-related moment that had any real weight for me. Seems particularly meaningful for Han.

My favorite detail was the time-honored tradition of creating a lightsaber and how it was handled by Kylo Ren. There was a lot of mockery of the design once it was revealed but it makes perfect sense now given the circumstances in which it was made and the reference materials used to make it.

I love the idea that there is ancient documentation out there describing the rituals and practices of a Jedi/Sith that are detailed enough that he could pursue the endeavor on his own and achieve crude success.

Um, is there someone else using your account? I mean, your post about my intent was less than 15 minutes ago. Surely, your short term memory isn't that bad.

I stand by that post. There is no backpedaling or slandering on my part.

Perhaps you should think twice the next time you throw out blanket accusations and insults in reactionary frustration because too many voices are saying things you don't like to hear.

I really hope they move forward from the aesthetic of the OT. TFA felt so similar to ANH that I didn't need to read spoilers to know the plot of the movie.

Let's be honest here, Hasbro will dictate a new equivalent for Phasma to sell toys.

Makes sense. Sith are driven by anger and are more on the offense and Jedi are more passive and defend themselves.
The one time Obi-Wan goes on the offensive he tries to jab Anakin who easily deflects it away and then Obi-Wan does that armlock thing to protect his open self.
I really like that fight, just feel it is nearly ruined by instead of just a darn good(possibly best) fight of the series Lucas tried to turn it into "The most epic fight in cinema history"

And while those elements would work in a POTC fight, they were way out of place here.

So rethinking about the story, here's what I'm thinking now about a few things:

1- The "force awakens" and Snoke's mention of this, as well as the trailer's line "both the light and the dark", I think this is really key to what the story will be about, that the force doesn't work the way we thought it did. It ties in with Anakin who "brought balance to the force", we didn't know what that meant, and I think the movies will explain it.

2- It means that in this context, the force tries to stay balanced, so if someone is extensively using the light or dark side of the force, the opposite will emerge or "awaken".

3- Presumably after ROTJ only Luke and Snoke remained, so the force was more or less balanced. By training new jedis, it caused an imbalance, and Snoke was probably looking into doing the same anyway, or it's the opposite: Snoke started pulling on Ben, Luke felt an awakening in the force, and started to train new jedis, including Ben.

4- People find out about how training new jedis is a mistake, that it will just create a mess as before. Cue Rey's vision where there are multiple bodies around her and it looks like someone is about to club her but he gets killed by Kylo. All the jedis have been killed, but she has been saved by Kylo. Why? If the balance thing is true, killing her would imbalance the force and would probably cause a bigger resurgence on the light side, something Snoke doesn't want. So now we are left with a stalemate: two masters, two apprentices, on each side of the force. Both Luke and Snoke are fine with this, in as much as neither really know yet how to deal with the other without it backfiring. Rey's memory was wiped somehow, left on her own, Luke left to find the first jedi temple to try and find answers on how to deal with this.

5- Eventually Kylo is growing in power, and the more he does the more the force tries to awaken on the light side, cue TFA.

So you can imagine that the reason Rey becomes increasingly powerful in TFA is because Kylo is growing in power too on the dark side, or because it's all rushing back after being held back for so many years dormant in Rey.

In Ep VIII, Luke would want to try and control Rey's growth as a force user, but we know Snoke said he'd complete Kylo's training, so it would likely lead him to have to go and confront Snoke without really knowing what to do about the outcome.

Betting Rian Johnson makes a key aspect of Episode 8 some sort of buddy-action-comedy caper flick with Poe & Finn.

You all need to check out The Brothers Bloom asap.

Finn has more enemies than Rey at this point. You have Ren who actually wanted to kill him who has a back story that's an inverse reflection of Finn's. Then you have Phasma which is self evident.

"help me obi-wan kenobi. you're my only hope"
LOL! I can't believe I forgot that part...
Um, is there someone else using your account? I mean, your post about my intent was less than 15 minutes ago. Surely, your short term memory isn't that bad.
Come on dude, tone it down. This is a path to the Dark Side.

I always took that as Anakin and Obiwan being so in tune with the Force and knowing each other so well that they were both able to anticipate eachother's moves, so they went so far with it that their blades don't even touch. Not sure if that really makes sense but that was my immeadite reaction to it.

Maybe. but then they just continued on fighting after. I like the theory of trying to just confuse the other person, and since they're master and student they both had the same idea, kinda like hivemind.

If they go the Empire route and keep Finn and Rey mostly apart with two divergent storylines then you have 2 adversaries now. Phasma can hunt Finn, Kylo can hunt Rey. Man vs woman vs man vs woman. Its like poetry.
I actually really like this, that would be an awesome plot for the next movie.

I hope Rey was a youngling at the academy. Not a Skywalker but close to Luke.

That would make some sense of her insane powers.

Not that we know what they are now, but JJ did say that Rian Johnson asked him to set up a few things in this movie for VIII -- some of which he was happy to do, others he said he didn't like as much. No idea if that relates to Phasma at all, but it's not like the two movies are independent of each other.
