[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

In the art-of book for TFA there is actually art depicting this. It's an idea they toyed with earlier on that could still be reused in the future.

Anakin's ghost was constantly shifting between the light and the dark. At one moment looking like Anakin (PT Anakin rather than Sebastian Anakin) before what looked like metal and wire crept across his face and suddenly taking on the visage of Vader. He exists as both simultaneously.

Real neat idea and I'm for it.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhh that kind of torpedoes the entire arc of the franchise. His spirit was redeemed. Tortured Force Ghost Anakin is unnecessary.

The entire fleet was in that one system? And at the planets that blown up? In the entire galaxy?

I mean, Star Trek does the stupid stuff two where the entire fleet is either destroyed or not available, but it doesn't make it any less stupid.
Yup, it's stupid. What they should have done was have the Resistance contact the Republic fleet, huge space battle ensues and the First Order actually holds its own for a long while but ends up retreating while the New Republic has to retreat as well due to the losses it took. Sets up the First Order's strength.

Yea? Like what?

He did a USMC documentary recently where he talked about how acting helped him cope with things he saw while on duty, he started a charity to help others express their emotions through acting.

I was confused about Greg Grunberg showing up and getting a line but then looked it up and apparently he's good friends with Abrams. It turns out Abrams threw in a ton of friends and co-workers in as extras.

Confession.

I like every star wars movies, I don't even get the hate for the prequels - nor do I care about the hate. To me, star wars is star wars. It can't be bad, its just one of those things I enjoy no matter what.

Having said that, I know some movies are better than others, but still, I just take all of them for what they are and get lost in them. They're fun and adventurous.
They can be bad, you just enjoy it anyways, which is fine. I've enjoyed plenty of things that I would consider bad if I were writing a critique on them, but if I'm not then who cares.

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
Pretty disappointed.

Again, star wars had to have fully cgi characters instead of makeup and practical effects.

That yellow cgi character with the glasses just looked fucking bad. And the smoak or whatever looks terrible too.

Movie was meh overall. Started off strong, but ultimately just "okay".

Just out of my second time seeing it, very disappointed first time around, second time less so. But still it is just Ep 4 :(

What bothers me is, they were so afraid of doing an original story for upsetting of the fans that they just went back to the well and did Ep4 - star wars deserves better. Say what you want about the prequels, decent story that deserved a movie to tell it.

One question, when Starkiller base fires, does the beam split into 4 ? Also how can Han and the rest see the explosions ? was it mentioned they are in the same system ?

MMarston

Was getting caught part of your plan?
That just shows you how powerful Anakin always was.

They're not in the same system. JJ just likes shots like that. He did the same thing in Star Trek. Guy doesn't really get how big space is, especially an entire galaxy.

I think the stormtrooper with the riot gear who duels finn (and kicks his ass) is the only rank and file stormtrooper in 7 movies to in any way distinguish himself or be badass. in a sense, he's unique of all the films. Generally, stormtroopers have been shown to be inept.

I want a figure of him! and a name!

I wasn't the biggest fan of the creature designs in this film. In the OT, banthas, dewbacks, and tauntauns looked like they could be real creatures. That giant pig/elephant thing on Jakku just looked like a big Muppet. It looked goofy.

It's not that he doesn't get it. He just flat out does not care. He values having a punchy well paced movie over dealing with realistic depictions of distances and time.

Exactly. I don't like the "acting" mostly in the PT. But I like the overall story. I even give the CG a pass.

This was after watching it, for the first time since release, about 2 weeks ago. I had got swept up in the internet opinion of them being terrible and wanted to see for myself if they're as bad as everyone says, or if I should form my own opinion about them.

Is it ever explained why Luke would even leave behind a map for others to find him if he went in exile? And why does the guy from the seventh seal have it?

I think the map is to the temple that Luke is supposed to be seeking, not directly a map to the person directly, it is their best guess that is where he is.

They could be in the same system. The planets aren't even named so who knows (even JJ doesn't know, apparently).

Could be that he was leaving a map to Jedi temples, but the movie does a poor job of showing the passage of time, so we'll never know if Rey went scouring the galaxy for him or if it was an X marks the spot kind of map.

Edit: Unless they touch on it in VIII...which they probably will.

Nobody remembers the Hoth campaign where the Rebels got fucked up proper...

Could have done with stopping the film when she took off, it was a natural end and then when 8 opens up you can forgive her for finding the planet right away because time has passed.

I really hate the end shot :(

Definitely the latter. Good point, but they go from completing the map to the Falcon landing there. So I don't believe it was a passage of time.

R2 likely was keeping track of him, why he had some of the data within him of the route he took and they musta got separated. The flashes of Luke touching R2, the knights of ren, etc likely involved their separation. Somehow the info of where Luke went after that was found and given to BB-8 in the movie.... probably missing navigation data of the route to take ?

You are like me. I enjoy all 7 movies, no exception. Don't get the hate get to you. Don't jump into the bandwagon. ;)
Its totally OK to like the prequels, just sayin though, not everyone who doesnt like the PT is jumping on a bandwagon.
I tried really really hard to like them. I love Star Wars... I just dont.

There's like a orange line that ends at the planet on BB8's map. I assume they just flew directly there.

Youre not wrong. There are a variety of reasons why it doesn't fit our current understanding of events.

It's also cool enough that I don't care if they want to go for it anyway. I think it's neat that his ghost might retain both aspects of his personality. And while it doesnt fit so much with the themes of the OT, it seems like it might fit the way the ST is treating the force.

I get the impression that the dark and light go hand in hand as sort of a yin yang thing, and one may not be able to exist without the other. One of the quotes they used as inspiration for the way the force works and the plot of TFA was (vague from memory) "Every match you light also casts shadows." By recreating the Jedi, Luke inadvertently recreated the dark side by tipping the balance. He left to find an old Jedi temple in an attempt to understand the force in this way and understand his mistake. Who better to consult than someone who exists as both the light and the dark?

In fact the Mortis arc in The Clone Wars depicts Anakin as being someone who would master both the light and the dark simultaneously and this is why he was the chosen one.

And this guy busted a gut to show off his mad skills only to be ignored.

The prequels are fine if I dont think about them, I listen to alot of star wars podcasts, weekly, commentaries etc and when it gets to the prequels I get quite upset at the mind fuckery you have to do to make them consistent, its not just the acting, the overall story and implications on characters hurts my brain.

However, I can easily, and do, sit down and watch all of the prequels and have a good time.

I wonder if Billy Dee Williams's son can act, he'd be perfect for a spin-off movie for Lando. The spitting image of his father.

That's completely fine. Not talking about all the prequel haters, but definitely many. ;)

It'll be revealed that Finn is Lando's son and was kidnapped while young. Because everyone has to be related to everyone.

I had a couple of friends who firmly believed this had to be the case before the movie came out.

I asked them if they think all black people know each other/are related in the real world, too...

That would have been terrible. Rioting in the streets terrible. Seeing Luke made the ending great. Cutting before that would have been unsatisfactory to the max. They finally get the map finished which is the point the movie starts on, and without ending it with some completion you're left feeling like it was an unresolved point. At least this way you get to see that Rey found him and it made people happy seeing him even if briefly.
