i believe the studio is pushing blanchett for lead and mara for supporting so they don't split the votes but either way i hope larson pulls through.

You've never heard of this expression? It means that when they watch a movie with J.Law they don't see the character she's playing but just the actress. She's not "disappearing" into the role. It's purely an acting stance as well, not some kind of make-up or effects thing.

I think the Jlaw from Joy is a very different type of character (more subdued, passive, full of melancholy) to the Jlaw in Silver Linings Playbook (fiery, irrational, aggressive, funny, full of bluster).
