Exactly. There's no reason at all to think this will be a Wii U2 and most comments from Nintendo indicate they've learned a lot of valuable lessons from 3DS and Wii U. xenodude, what gives you the impression this will be a Wii U2 situation? For one, I don't expect it to want to make you run or hide, and the streets (of the stores it releases in) will probably have names. 😂

I see what you did there.

And no, it won't be a Wii U2, they've basically said as much.

As somebody who just dialed 100h in a handheld game where a thumb has been sitting over the periphery of the screen 99% of the playtime, I'll say the make-of-break of that concept is how wide the screen, and more importantly, game's horizontal FOV is - a game on a 16:9-ish screen may have no issues keeping the player's focus in the central 4:3 area. Now, if the screen is already 4:3, the game may end up using too wide a vertical FOV (i.e. too much sky and ground), just to keep horizontal and vertical FOVs proportional.

Can't see the screen being 4:3 under any circumstances. Figure I'd been thinking about recently, which matches the layout in the pic is 1280*480: 800*480 between the stick centers with 240 radius semicircles on each side. Tying it into console versions of the games would be the biggest issue, and wider horizontal fovs tend to be a bit costlier in most games, letting more objects on screen. Would have to vary per game with some games going full wide, some fully cropping, and some more balanced in between.

An ecosystem.

As much as i like this and have been behind it for years, than in itself it's not enough.

This by itself would be mainly targetted at the traditional Nintendo userbase. Considering their natural sales decline curve for their home consoles (Wii aside) and how they now face a significant and dangerous decline in their strong sector: Dedicated handheld device. These alone wouldn't change their situation.

I don't think such type of device would feature a 4:3 screen either. I was just using familiar screen aspects for clarity.

Maybe it's just me, but I never notice Sony or Xbox fanboys going crazy over rumours like Nintendo fans do.

Take everything with a grain of salt, guys. Remember Aries from a good few years back now? Haha. What a joke.

Sony and MS are usually Western orientated, and you're bound to find plenty of loose lips here, so it's makes things easier when it comes to news from these two. News from NCL on the other hand is mostly from the East, so yeah... lool

That's why Nintendo threads are the best.

Delusion and insanity is rarely boring and necessary when you're dealing with such a tightlipped company.

There were dozens upon dozens upon dozens of threads on both Durango and orbis and their rumoured specs, softwares and respective focuses. Difference is, the specs for both were mostly known almost 2 years in advance.

I thought so. if they really wanted to push 3DS BC as a central factor they might do something weird like that, but it sounds like they want a nu start.

I think it is safe to say that VR won't be a part of NX.

Bill Trinen just retweeted someone's post basically saying that by the time tethered VR is affordable, mobile VR will be good enough for everyone.

I wonder how likely it would be for Nintendo to release a "Nintendo cardboard" where you place the handheld and it becomes a makeshift VR device.
For phones I think that's VR's future, probably not for the first portable NX, tho

Not that I'm saying that you're wrong, but there could be all sorts of reasons that he retweeted that, chiefly among them being that Bill isn't privy to their VR plans; NX is not just a console, it's a platform of potentially many devices.

You should go back to one of those Verendus threads, or if you want to go insane: One of famousmortimer's .

XBox fans have almost no presence on Gaf.

I think the only way I would buy this anytime early in its life or at all would b if it played UHD BDROMs, but it's Nintendo so we know that's not gonna happen.

Compared the specs for wiiu vs vita

http://game-consoles.specout.com/compare/66-67/Nintendo-Wii-U-vs-PlayStation-Vita

Beside the gpu, is the vita more powerfull then the wiiu?

If this is the case, why should the nx handheld should be less powerfull then the wiiu?

They will find a solution to run zelda U on it, but do we realy want a handheld less powerfull then < wiiu < vita ?

That site is amazingly bad and wrong and ridiculous. Just wanted to quote to bring attention to how bad it is.

Nintendo has been pretty up-to-snuff when it comes to storage media since the Wii. Wii used the same capacity discs as XBox 360 (DVD-9) and Wii U uses the same capacity as PS4 and XBO (25/50 GB BD). That is not a current area they have issues with.

The issue is that for a Nintendo cardboard device to work, you'd want a really high res screen (not to mention the graphics hardware to drive it*), and it's extremely unlikely that Nintendo would go that route.

Technically it could stream from the home NX, I suppose. Still, I wouldn't bet on the 1080p+ screen needed for decent VR.

Actually, that retweet got me thinking that Nintendo has future plans for VR in the mobile market. Obviously it's not gonna happen now, but it could be a third NX device further down the road.

They could sell Google Cardboard apps on the Play Store... They are making mobile experiences now, after all...

I still waiting for Google Cardboard Pokemon Snap...(I know, I know, not technically Nintendo...)

LOL, holy crap. They just sort of typed in whatever the hell they wanted to for the Wii U specs.

Using a BD-ROM isn't the same as letting me watch UHD BDs. THe Wii U uses a BD-ROM but it's useless for watching movies...

I wouldn't expect NX to offer the ability to watch any proprietary physical media, especially with physical media on the way out in general. Also, it may very well play carts and not discs.

I feel like whenever someone comes along and says they're a Nintendo insider, there are a lot of questions people forget to ask.

Such as...
- What's the deal with SF Zero and control issues?
- Where's Federation Force?
- Since Zelda NX is going to be a thing, what about Smash NX?
- What's up with Metroid in general?
- Where's Kirby?
- Retro is working on...?
- Nintendo Direct is when?
- When is the ____ amiibo being restocked?
- When's Nintendo bringing analog triggers back?

And so on.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned that it's not likely on Nintendo's first NX portable. Maybe a revision down the line

As a poster mentioned before, it is going to be very interesting to see how Nintendo reintroduce or market Federation Force after last E3's appearance.

You're correct and I never said you could. You didn't specify you wanted to watch movies; only that the hardware would support UHD BD-ROM. It could definitely support reading UHD BDs and not allow watching movies.

Well if Nintendo really wanted to pursue VR then they'd put a 1080p screen in the handheld off the bat (but only let games run at 540p to prevent over-stretching the GPU) and sell a GearVR style headset for it that could be used to stream full-res VR from the home console with similar low-latency wireless streaming tech they used in the Wii U. They could probably hit the lowest all-in price for a "full" VR system while being fully wireless.

Not that I at expect any kind of VR from Nintendo (at least not for a few years yet, if at all), but from a theoretical perspective they'd actually be in a surprisingly good place to pursue VR.
