OMG, being a Sega loving peasant, I usually don't expect some of my old favs to get remakes or attention like this, such good news!

Lovely to see all the retro Wonderboy love. :) I recall Monster Boy garnering a similar adoring reaction. Excited for the unveiling tomorrow.

Two different renditions of essentially the same game with different titles and main characters, produced and released by different studios and publishers?

The spirit of Westone lives on.

It's amazing to see the spirit of Westone echoing in to modern times. The studio was long gone but passionate developers and fans seem to be placing a defibrillator on to the franchise.

This game and Monster Boy are my two most anticipated games at the moment as a childhood fan of the series.

If this is really just a straight port of the original game with redone graphics, I can't say I'm that excited. It's good, but I'm not sure it'd hold up nearly so well as to deserve that kind of treatment.

1) That's blasphemy! The original is one of the greatest 8-bit games. All kinds of things have had remakes over the years, many less deserving than Wonder Boy III.

2) It's not going to be a straight port.

I can't believe both this and Monster Boy are happening... after all these years...

From somewhat recent replays of it, it actually holds up fairly well. Only the very end of the game goes a little overboard with the difficulty, and even that is still done so in a way that they could easily just tweak a few things and leave the endgame mostly intact otherwise.

I agree that Dragon's Trap doesn't hold up as well as you might think and it's a game that really needs to be improved, not remade as-is. It's my least favourite Monster World game, honestly.

This seems like a win / win situation for both the Dragon's Trap and Monster Boy projects, as the more noise that is being made about the series the better. I know I will certainly be playing both of them!

I don't know how to process this, I want to jump over the moon in excitement regarding anything Dragon's Trap - but I have to try and contain it in case it ends up being nothing or stupid. I don't know my poor self could take the disappointment.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE DRAGON'S TRAP! :D :D

Finally a reason why Dragon's Trap was left out of the Monster World collection then never released separately?

I would have even been happy with a VC release of the Game Gear one on 3DS, would have LOVED it in fact, but they gave us nothing instead.

Dragon's Trap is available on Wii VC, as is Dragon's Curse for TG16, so take your pick!

Game Gear VC was not successful, so there was no incentive for Sega to reach licensing arrangements for games like Dragon's Trap because they simply weren't worth the effort/money.

The Sega Vintage Collections were released as 3 games per set, so when it came to Monster World, I imagine there were a few different factors that determined the games they picked:

-Monster Land is by far the most popular game in the series in Japan and the arcade version had never officially been released outside of Japan, so it had to be there

-Monster World 4 had never been released in English, so this was a perfect opportunity for them to release an official translation

-Dragon's Trap SMS was never released in Japan and the Game Gear version was probably deemed unsuitable for release on a HD TV, so not only is it obscure, they had to pick between two different versions, neither of which would be appealing to all markets

-Monster World was probably deemed more palatable to newer players than Dragon's Trap: higher resolution, better graphics/sound, no passwords, etc. (Maybe Sega US/Europe has sales figures that show it's more popular than Dragon's Trap, who knows.)

The Dragon's Trap might be the best game from the 8-bit generation, and this is coming from a flaming NES fanboy and collector. I want to be excited by this, but a verbatim remake with updated assets isn't really doing much for me. I don't mind the graphics and music of the original.

I never had a Master System, nor played a Wonder Boy/Monster World game, but I do love Mekensleep's Soul Bubbles. Consider me intrigued.

Ayy...

but will the music be as good as the SMS version? Very important question that needs to be answered.

Tomorrow my friend. :) I'd imagine you're going to be quite impressed!

One thing I'll add is that it's impressive that they managed to secure genuine and legal use of the name. Makes one wonder how this evaded the Monster Boy team and yet Omar was able to get the name. At least that's what I'm assuming; that because they're using "Wonderboy" in the promo images that they have Sega's permission.

Perhaps that's why Omar held off revealing this for quite a while. He needed to talk to Sega.

Waiting! 🤓

So the countdown indicates there's still a day remaining but the OP says this is being revealed at 3pm. When is this being revealed?

Not long now! The screenshots I saw were beautiful. I think you're going to be very impressed!

I fucked up, it's being revealed TOMORROW at 3pm BST. Off by a day. Technically the OP is still correct ;)

I can't believe this is a thing that exists. This was my "rent it every weekend" game growing up. Can't wait to see what they've got planned.

Lovely to see all the warmth and adoration in here for this announcement! Excited for the reveal and can't wait to read the reactions.

Haha yeah I guess you're right. The game is still being revealed tomorrow so the OP is still accurate. Just 22 hours or so and we get to see the game.

From my understanding, Dragon's Trap isn't popular with Japanese players, and Sega underestimated its popularity amongst American/European gamers. They could only pick three games, so they went with the Genesis one, since the Genesis game had better sales figures and would be more recognized.

Yeah it's a shame the game was excluded. It's just wonderful though you can recognise and understand Sega's reasons for the exclusion. This remake is one amazing consolation for that though.

Is this real life???

I can't hold my excitement with this and Monster Boy. Hold me...

Please be good, please have the same OST, please have similar art, please, please, please!

HOLY SHIT!

Absolutely LOVE the original but really am not feeling the art style shown in the banner/smoking pig. I think Monster Boy looks a lot better and more accurate to the original WB games. But I'll look forward to this with cautious enthusiasm... so happy to see all this WB love lately!
It looks similar to the artwork in the manual, IMO.

Looks amazing! I'm really happy such a thing exists, my fav Monster World game (and one of my fav games of all time!) by far I really can't believe it is getting such treatment after all this time.

Now just to wait for whenever it comes out. :(

:D

Looks incredible!

History

A cult classic
We took on making a modern version of the 1989 Master System / PC Engine cult classic created by Westone (Ryuichi Nishizawa, Takanori Kurihara, Hiromi Kurihara and Shinichi Sakamoto). With the help of Ryuichi Nishizawa (Westone), Shinji Fujiwara (LAT), and a relentless commitment of DotEmu to untangle a bunch of documents covered in pixellated dustwebs, we have licensed the IP to create this new version (a first since 1994).

Imagine if Zelda, Metroid and Mario had a love child.
