Woman records boyfriend after getting shot by the Police on Facebook

Why don't I hear anyone talking about the relation of police gun violence + amount of guns in america?

Granted there is a LOT of racism among police, but it doesn't help when you are thinking in the back of your mind that it's more likely that this person your pulling over has a gun, than doesn't have one. Police officers in Canada have to worry about the possibility of a gun being pulled much less. Mix a nervous cop + racism, recipe for disaster.

That video is too much. Americans need their guns taken away.

Yes, this. Only recently have I finally reached the point of wanting a total ban on guns. Of course, racism is the real problem, but a fear of someone pulling a gun is like a spark in a room full of a explosive racists.

I'm reminded of a story from years ago in which a man took a test to be a cop and was turned down because he was deemed to be "too smart". He scored a 33 and apparently that force only interviews people that score between 20 and 27. Their reasoning was down to them believing that someone that's "too smart" may get bored of being a copy and all the expensive training would go to waste. But I think this is the flipside. You've got a bunch of people that simply aren't equipped to properly do their jobs.

Being a cop comes with poor pay, tons of responsibility, lots of danger, and constant exposure to some worst of the worst in society. I can't imagine the impact of seeing some of the horrible stuff they see on a regular basis. Add that to the overall negative image of cops by the public plus the media attention, it has to be difficult to recruit. I mean who would want to be a cop these days?

because even if we took the guns from cops they'd still be beating/tazing/macing black people constantly for no reason

we have a gun problem in america and i hate it but this is a different issue

I'm just saying they're misreading ordinary situations.
I don't know how much training can stop blatant racial profiling though. If you get all nervous because the guy you pulled over has dark skin then you probably shouldn't be in law enforcement and wielding a lethal weapon.

So the cop fired into a car with a child in the back seat...

This could've been much much worse than it already is

Probably not. It sucks.

This is as much as a police problem as it is a gun control problem. Existing gun laws make police extremely nervous and paranoia to the point they open fire at the slightest hint. This together causes these incidents.

Something that hasn't been mentioned. If this man had a concealed carry permit, depending on the state of origin he's been throughly vetted. At the very least he's had fingerprints taken, a background check and would have it denied as a criminal. In other states he's taken at last an hour or two of concealed carry classes.

This cop, however nervous just shot someone that very likely had a clean, impeccable record and possibly training. Not your average Joe. This is insane.

I don't see how they'll be able to spin this by destroying the man's character. A major part of the police defense of the previous shootings centered around how the young men killed were in process, suspected or had records for committing crimes.

*After looking it up MN is a "do not inform state"

624.714 Subd. 1b.
(a) The holder of a permit to carry must have the permit card and a driver's license, state identification card,
or other government-issued photo identification in immediate possession at all times when carrying a pistol
and must display the permit card and identification document upon lawful demand by a peace officer, as
defined in section 626.84, subdivision 1. A violation of this paragraph is a petty misdemeanor. The fine for a
first offense must not exceed $25. Notwithstanding section 609.531, a firearm carried in violation of this
paragraph is not subject to forfeiture.

He fucking told the cop he had it on him when it wasn't even required by law.

*Second edit: They had weed on them according to her at the end of the video. Now it's a legal landmine and his concealed carry permit is automatically revoked in just about every state. They now have a defense of him having a gun + drugs which is a huge nono and if played right could get the cop off charges.

Back in the beginning of the Black Lives Matter campaign, a bunch of activists dragged barrels full of concrete onto a major freeway in Boston and blocked traffic.

At the time, I thought they were crazy and just inconveniencing random people and turning public opinion against their very cause.

Then pretty much nobody got punished for the last round of shootings and yesterday happened and I finally understand.m

I have no comprehension of how bad it must be to be black in the United States and have to deal with all this shit. Like, I thought I knew it was bad, but the sheer enormity of how bad it is is really beginning to sink in. It's sad that I'm becoming resigned to the idea that the police pretty much have carte blanche to kill any black man they wish, and the only thing that'll happen is that Republicans will rush out and defend the cops and pass a Blue Lives Matter bill because of course it's the police that need protecting.

Fuck, I'm close to the point that I'm so infuriated that I'd block a goddamn freeway because what the fuck else can you do? Nothing ever fucking changes so you rage against the heavens.

Like, seriously, dark days are coming and I don't think I can blame people for what's going to come.

Quoting because this mirrors my own feelings pretty well and it's honetsly difficult to even put words to these atrocities. Haven't ever felt so disheartened/cynical about our governening systems in a long time...

Support to everyone effected directly and indirectly.

This is so tragic, police are supposed to serve the public. I really commend the lady in the video for staying so calm to get the video out in the public space in such a rational way. How is she ever supposed to trust the police again? Fuck racism. Bring the fucking change already before more lose their lives over something as shitty as pure ignorance.

What reason do they have to be fearful?

Part of it is because they are forced to watch horrifying videos where police are killed at routine traffic stops until they are paranoid and fear everyone, although it certainly seems they are more fearful of certain types of people than others.

So you have a bunch of people out there with guns that are scared of everything and are told they can use those guns when they feel scared.

If this were even remotely true they'd be gunning down southern Whites 100mph with all the guns they own. But somehow they don't. They magically end up gunning down Black folks. And they were doing it long before guns were a serious issue. Shit, they were doing it when Black people were specifically prohibited from owning guns.

They're scared of Black people. Armed or not. That "negro rage" got em trembling.... Ugh.

Will black people have to paint their skin in "white" to feel safe in the USA? When you have to fear cops more than actual criminals, this is getting ridiculous.

And here as a black guy, middle class, about to graduate college, no record, etc... I know I can possibly die one day during a traffic stop.

Funny thing is that I work with public safety too.

Fuck this.

It won't. Change will have to be total. New hiring practices, training, and ways to hold cops accountable for crimes they commit.

Pretty sure you'll be alright if you don't leave your vehicle and attack a police officer. I don't think that's race specific.

Fucking disgusting on so many levels. Mostly that it has to take it being live streamed to ensure that the truth comes out and ensure the woman / her child's safety.

I've seen a few situations like this escalate over a fucking traffic stop. Still disgusting to me that the situation is so bad in America that broken tail lights is enough to cost you your life.

You can do all the right things and still get shot. And get blamed for it.

Running down the checklist (of things not to do while black) simply decreases the likelihood of escalation.

Joke post ?

Police killed at least 102 unarmed black people in 2015, nearly twice each week. (See which police departments were responsible for these deaths)

Nearly 1 in 3 black people killed by police in 2015 were identified as unarmed, though the actual number is likely higher due to underreporting

37% of unarmed people killed by police were black in 2015 despite black people being only 13% of the U.S. population

Unarmed black people were killed at 5x the rate of unarmed whites in 2015

Wow. Apparently you didn't see the video. I live in Texas too where many friends and family have a CHL. Now the idea of getting shot following the law is a blatant reality.
