Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

I've been wanting them to go with a hybrid solution for a while now. Let's see how they implement it. It still needs

- A good and functional controller. Going hybrid Could mean less set of inputs (less shoulder buttons)

- A decent screen for portable. Don't cheap out again Nintendo

- I'd like a power/fidelity boost when using TV/HDMI out. If not then it's just a handheld with TV out like the PSP

People, seriously, read this:

Imagine the handheld is down clocked when you play it as a portable. Once you hook it up to the dock, it upclocks the GPU for a boost in power because it no longer has to worry about battery life.

There's a lot of potential here.

I agree with you. I think the dock will allow the system to overclock to produce better graphics needed for an HDTV. This will be interesting. I'm really thinking NX will have a Tegra X2. The fact that they have a fan running in the devkits with an X1 confirms that they are overclocking it. X1's run really quiet. I own the Shield TV with the same chipset.

I'm mad as HELL!

Like almost everyone? We've had rumors of this for a very very long time. And almost all of us have been for it. You are just different, your getting upset over a piece of hardware...

Ports of other PC/PS4/XONE (x86) games are not that easy with an ARM-based platform, right?

CPU architecture means next to nothing for ports. If the CPU is strong enough (it is), the console can get ports. If it doesn't, it's because devs didn't see an opportunity.

Sounds more like a new handheld than a hybrid.
Button-less handheld where you can buy your buttons separately and attach them to the system.
Dock that attaches to the TV might be used as an interface for all your Wii & Wii U controllers.

I hope the dock is simply for charging and it uses wireless tech to stream to the TV. Call me crazy but I think the WiiU controller was a good idea that could have been executed a lot better. Mainly smaller/better battery life/Better display / better touch screen etc..I liked all the features though. The camera, the motion controls. I REALLY hope this is an evolution of that concept into a full console. If they manage to pull this off by having the console be the size of an iPhone 6Plus, with a comparable touch screen, a spare microSD slot, integrated controller, bluetooth for peripherals and a custom mobile graphics chip comparable to current gen, I actually think we will have a winner. They have to do this just right though.

Well I guess Monster Hunter will at least look sharp on the NX, and not an unholy pixelated mess. Show me the goods Ninty, I'm ready to believe.

Tegra X1 (Maxwell) is already vastly more powerful than Wii U. If this uses X2 (Pascal, 16nm) it will possibly be around Xbox One when used as a home console. So yes, Zelda will look better.
Which is incredibly underpowered. The Scorpio and Neo will be out soon which will blow away this console as far as specs go and the NX will be mid generation when the PS5 comes out. I hope Nintendo has a lot of games to keep the masses occupied with their lack of third party support.
they won't

Awe man, on one hand they're focusing on what they're good at, which is handhelds. On the other they're not even trying to fix what they're bad at, which is 3rd party support.

Will be watching to see how they reveal it.

cautiously optimistic. isn't this supposed to be more powerful than the wii u?

A Tegra X1 is more powerful than the Wii U. Why is that in question here? The Wii U's GPU closest equivalent is an ATI Radeon HD 4660. The X1 easily tops that. And an X1 is just whats in the dev kits. I'm not getting my hopes up, but I wouldn't doubt it having an X2 upon release.

So looking back at the Wii U unveiling..

The way that they presented it (and left everyone confused) is pretty much what the NX actually is, isn't it?

I remember walking away from the presentation not actually knowing whether or not there was an actual console involved.

So I guess mobile specs are gonna be holding multiplatform games back for the foreseeable future. Nice.

It's not going to get those games.

No one is going to treat this like just another part of their home development pipeline.

(* where 'no one' means 'generally most'. I'm sure it might get the odd port from that space that's an easy fit )

Is this what they didn't want the competition to copy though? lol

It doesn't sound like something revolutionary or something that will catch on at such a big scale that Sony and Microsoft will just stop and drop what they're doing and copy this.

I'm here for it, but not if it's some underpowered, glorified handheld that just hooks up to your TV and has ugly PS2 era graphics.
Nobody asked for that.

I was actually thinking of the NX being a system like this when I was futzing about with my PSP Go recently. Drop the console in the dock and continue on playing the TV with a Dual Shock without any hassle (aside from initially syncing your DS3).

Yeah, this was one of my favorite features with the Go. I still have mine in the kitchen draw, but unfortunately the internal battery died and won't charge and it won't power up when plugged into the wall. My daughter actually found it and wants it, so I want to see if I can get it fixed.

the battery is gonna suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

watch nintendo go full scumbag and sell a stronger battery separately

Without properly competing tech wise with the AAA industry (as a handheld), I can't see any route for this succeeding in non Japan countries as a Nintendo/Japan exclusives box without being dirt cheap like the 3ds or theit other handhelds have been. And I doubt it'll be cheap considering there's only one model.

When we thought there were multiple NX products these issues explained themselves, but with only one product it's going to have a tricky time appealing globally.

I've been hoping for something like this since I got the WiiU, especially since most of my gaming happens when I'm on the train. If I can bring console games with me now then I'm sold and will probably be a launch day buy for me.

If you consider the growth of mobile gaming this is a good risk by Nintendo IMO. It allows them to get into mobile / portable while still, potentially, delivering console quality experience.

It's not going to have ps2 era graphics. We already know the X1 is more powerful than the wii u, and the rumors suggest it might be an X2 in the final version

Guess I better stock up on my Wii U and 3DS library for the future. Kinda regret not buying more software yesterday during Best Buy's sale.

Wii U games will be cheap during the couple of years after the NX launches and has grabbed all the attention. Stores will clear up stock, ebayers will be dumping their libraries to fund NX purchases, etc.

I don't think you should be all doom and gloom. Nintendo bringing back cartridges for their main system is pretty exciting to me. We will be playing Breath of the Wild, the next AAA Mario and Splatoon 2 both on the go and at home.

I wouldn't expect some extra crunch from the docking station and I think this good keeping the price low. Tegra X2 would make sense for the power requirements and it should offer quite the improvement over the X1.

wouldn't be surprised if a SCD docking station along with bundle was offered at launch. I do expect the base system comes with just a docking station to recharge and connect to TV. the SCD is probably what Nintendo wanted to keep under wraps.

I dont know why people are so surprised.

1- Nintendo fused both portable and hardware team into one a few years ago.

2- their major problem was games drough either in one or the other system.

Even if they didnt went to a hybrid solution The hardware and portable devices wouldnt be much diferent powerwise.

So yeah.

It was so obvious I'm still fucking staggered so many doubted it.

It was literally the only move Nintendo had left.

This would degrade the stationary part of the system to a mere gimmick. I can understand this move considering how much more successful their handhelds have been, but this also means that 3rd party support in the West will be pretty much dead in the water.

The Nintendo handhelds have been better than the consoles since GBA so I'm stoked.

I still think there will be a solely console NX coming later since it was said that NX was a chain of devices.

this solution basically makes them irrelevant to the console's success. if western 3rd parties think there's an audience on NX and want to port their games over? great. they'll add to what should be a great gaming library already. if not? great. Nintendo's first party stuff will be consolidated on one device and all of their other 3rd party stuff also won't be split across two platforms. so the library and release schedule should be great without them, making those games a great addition but not a necessity.

after the Wii U Nintendo was never going to bet on western 3rd party support. this is the perfect solution. it gives them an in while not hamstringing Nintendo to their support.

Or you could see it at last attempt to remain relevant. It's not secret that both 3DS and Wii U sold only a fraction of their predecessors. It's entirely possible that just Nintendo games maybe not be enough to make this thing successful. We shall see what times bring.

Didn't want the Chinese ripoff merchants to copy probably, not Sony and MS.
